Equestria Daily has been getting a few interesting product leaks over the past few days which paint a rather interesting picture of the future of pony.
My Little Pony: the Elements of Harmony: The Friendship Is Magic Official Handbook
The first announcement was the find of a book entitled My Little Pony: The Elements of Harmony: The Friendship is Magic Official Handbook on Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The book, published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, is currently set for publication on April 2, 2013 and, despite the name of the publisher, is ostensibly targeted for readers between the ages of 12 to 18. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers is an imprint of the Hachette Book Group and is the publisher of children’s books including Tintin, Arthur, Muppets books.
Following behind the break is speculation about other plans. If you don’t want to read, then don’t. Otherwise, read more!
My Little Pony DVD
Yesterday, Equestria Daily also announced the find of a “My Little Pony DVD” on the Top Draw Animation website. The announcement says little other than that the production will be 66 minutes long (about 3 episodes) and only recently started production (August 27, 2012) and will wrap up by December 21.
Given that the project is for a DVD, it can only be assumed that the release of such a DVD will be after December 21. In comparison, season 2 had a production start date of April 2011 and a production end date of December 2011 despite airing between October 2011 and May of this year.
What does this mean?
What is most interesting about this is that the start date of this production is so late. While scripts of season 2 were “locked” as early as February 1, 2011, the later start date of production (late August instead of April) suggests that the scripts for these episodes may have been finished as recently as early July. Thus, the hiring of new writers reported in February may, in fact, have been for this special rather than for the so-called “season 4″.
Given that season 3 is to consist of 13 episodes, and assuming that it starts airing in early to mid November (given the likely announcement of the date at NYCC), this would put the end of season 3 likely around March… Just in time for the production of this “My Little Pony DVD” to have been completed for distribution in (you guessed it!) the same early April timeframe that the Little, Brown book is to be released. (Compare with the 3 month lead time on the production of “The Friendship Express” DVD.)
This is, of course, entirely speculative. It’s quite possible that this DVD will be entirely separate from the April book. Indeed, it is worth noting that the handbook itself is titled “The Elements of Harmony”, which has previously been used by Hasbro to refer to season 1, episode 2 (i.e. “Friendship is Magic, part 2″). When The Round Stable has more to report on these two products, we will be sure to do so. ■
