Octopath Traveler is pretty good. not a groundbreaker in the storytelling or music departments, but it's cool to see how they worked ye olde RPG into something that's actually somewhat open-ended. the ability to choose which character you start as lays an interesting foundation for replayability, especially if you're into single-character challenges and speedruns and the like
i've done 6 of the 8 main stories so far. sometimes they're trite and predictable, sometimes times they're legit touching, and sometimes there's overlap between the two. when i am done with the game i might write up some spoiler-free impressions of what i like/dislike about each character's arc

You have to see this: A modder fixed the shitty AI in Aliens: Colonial Marines by fixing a typo in an .ini file.
This is why QA is so important, folks. This probably could have been fixed in a day if even a single one of the actual developers had found out that the game wasn't behaving how they'd intended and been given time and motivation to hunt down the source of the problem.
Well, that, and writing your .ini files in an editor with access to all your code and an auto-suggest feature.
(And remember, this was only fixable because the typo in question was in an editable plaintext file. Who KNOWS how many there were in the source code.)

The best part of this is that Gearbox put up a job listing a day later for someone to go over their code looking for typos.Pocket wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 2:36 amYou have to see this: A modder fixed the shitty AI in Aliens: Colonial Marines by fixing a typo in an .ini file.

My first Steam refund! I’d grabbed Ash of Gods: Redemption because it seemed like a Banner Saga-esque title. Turns out, it’s more a straight Banner Saga ripoff, only with atrocious writing. Back into the digital void, you knockoff!
Instead I used my credit on Telltale Batman, which (so far at least) is really good and has a better story than the Arkham games.

Was so excited for this, then I bought it and my computer can only run it very slowly... it always ran the first game fine but I guess they added on too much stuff, even with quality settings on Low. Guess I have to save money for a new one... maybe by the end of the year.

I'd buy it right now but Monster Hunter World is about to come out so I'll wait a bit. There's no way I'm beating this in a week

There are several more of the later ones that haven't come up yet, so you still have a shot at the Doctor, Surgeon, Bookkeeper, Paparazzo, Badboy, Fugitive, and Entertainer. Those were the ones I caught at the tail end of the original schedule.

Re: General gaming superthread
So guess who had a year-long, 3DS-related derp?
I brought my 3DS to BronyCon last year, thinking I'd carry it around for StreetPasses, but I never even got it out of my suitcase and subsequently got home to find it discharged. I plugged it in, recharged it, and tried to turn it on, but it wouldn't boot. I kept plugging it back in and the charging light would come on for a few seconds, then go back off. But I could not get the 3DS to turn on, so eventually I decided the battery had gone faulty and needed to be replaced. I set it aside and figured I'd get a new battery from Nintendo eventually.
Flash forward to just recently. I'd been hearing the WarioWare Gold was going to be really great, so I dug out my 3DS again. I went to turn it on, and in a flash of inspiration, remembered that it had a power button I had to press and hold. All this time, I'd been flipping the wireless on/off switch, which for some reason I thought was for power! Good thing I remembered how to do the very most basic operation with it, because I'd been thinking of buying a New 3DS and sending both off to Nintendo to have them move the games from my old 3DS to the New.
Anyway, WarioWare Gold is looking good and it drops at midnight tonight. I heard this'll be the last WarioWare, so I guess Intelligent Systems is moving full-time to Fire Emblem or something.

Re: General gaming superthread
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it was just a rumor that I heard on SA. But given how both WarioWare and Rhythm Heaven have been stagnating, how both have now gotten greatest-hits collections, and what a huge cash cow Fire Emblem is, I can see why Nintendo would want Intelligent Systems to dump everything else.

If it's a smash hit, I guess it could be like what Awakening did for Fire Emblem. Of course, that came out back when the 3DS was a much hotter console.

Wario Ware DIY could be the Mario Maker of the Switch, and it would rule. Please Nintendo, I beg.

I just finished Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice with 100% completion. You may have heard it brought up as one of the best games in 2017 in the list of the already amazing games that came out that year and I can see why. It was a fantastic experience and its depiction of mental illness was very well done. The game advises that you play with headphones and I absolutely agree with them. The lead character Senua suffers from hearing voices in her head and playing with headphones makes it REALLY sound like there are voices in your your head. It's an unreal experience that they actually worked with people who suffer from the condition to feel as authentic as possible.

Hellblade was excellent.
It’s hard to believe Senua’s actor was a member of the dev team with no prior acting or mocap experience.
Between that, Dead In Vinland (which I’m playing now) and Banner Saga 3, my gaming world has been heavily populated with Vikings for some reason.

Re: General gaming superthread
In a weird sort of way, I wish I hadn’t played Celeste. It made me think that maybe I wasn’t as bad at video games as I thought, but the last two months have reminded me that I very much suck at games. My brother was very kind and got me an eShop card and a copy of the Crash trilogy for the Switch. I feel bad about it, because my nostalgia for Crash evaporated almost instantly. I made it to the Lost City level in Crash 1 before bailing on the trIlogy for good. I just can’t do it.
Next, I thought, oh, I’ll play all the Mega Mans again. It might just be that Crash isn’t my thing. I did manage to beat Mega Man 1, but I haven’t had the courage to fire up 2. Then there was the Sonic Mania debacle. I can’t even get a single Chaos Emerald no matter how many hints I read or videos I watch. I’m not even touching Encore mode. Then I used the eShop card to buy Hollow Knight.
At first, I didn’t think this was a mistake. Actually, for the first 30-35 hours, I loved it. I played without a guide and blundered my way all the way to the worst ending under my own power. If I had left it there, at 86% finished, it would have been my GOTY. But no. I got excited to see what other content was in the game. Cue another 30 hours in real time of me wandering about cluelessly and getting my shit pushed in by ever single boss I find. I don’t like boss fights. They make me nervous and stressed out, unless it’s a very easy game (like Kirby, or Lego games, or Mario bosses, which tend to be easy even in hard Mario games). So having like a dozen bosses left to fight, several of whom took me 30 or 40 tries to beat, sapped my will to keep playing. I had the last straw about an hour ago, when I finally decided I was sick of the game, and decided to skip the last few optional tasks and just do the true last boss. Haha, nope, it eats me alive and then you have to fight another boss all over again just to fight the true last boss. And that boss, despite being “easy” according to the internet, is about at the limit of what I can physically make my hands do. It doesn’t matter if I can read his attacks if I can’t dodge in time, so I have to play very slowly, dodge everything, and drag the fights out so long that I get nervous and scared and then screw it up anyway.
I really want to love this game, but it passed the point of being fun like 20 hours ago. At this point, I only keep trying because I’ll feel like a loser if I give up. I already feel like a loser because I suck so bad at nearly anything harder than a lego game. Maybe it’s time for me to give up video games, so I don’t become one of those people complaining about them on the internet. I’ve loved them for 38 years, but maybe it’s just time for me to accept that they aren’t for me and that I don’t have the physical or mental acuity to keep up with them.

Re: General gaming superthread
If there's one lesson to take away from Undertale, it's that it's absolutely okay, and should even be encouraged, to enjoy games for what they are and not feeling obligated to wring every last bit of content out of them, especially once it stops being fun. You got 30+ hours out of Hollow Knight that you really loved, and that's more than worth it. Just don't beat yourself up over not being able to 100% it. I rarely 100% complete games myself, and that's not some personal failing on my part. Play games when you enjoy them, stop when you're not. Simple as that.

Re: General gaming superthread
I didn’t know that was a thing in Undertale, but then, I’ve never played Undertale. I mean, I already do abandon games for all kinds of reasons. I gave up on Splatoon because not even Nintendo could make me enjoy or be good at a competitive shooter. I can do FPS if they’re very slow paced or easy, but they aren’t my favorite thing. I gave up on Super Mario Odyssey because of motion controls (I’m bad at them, too). I gave up on Breath of the Wild because I wasn’t enjoying it at all; it just felt like a slog and I sucked at the combat. I haven’t actually beaten a Zelda since Ocarina of Time, except for the DS games, for whatever reason. I used to routinely buy and give up on RPGs and fighting games (or, worse, never play them) because they were my favorite genres in the 90s. Now I don’t like them because I overdid it back then and at most, I get like 90 minutes in before I’m bored or just don’t want to play it again. I did at least learn to stop buying them.
I never got into RTS because I can’t even win at a game of checkers, so that’s out. I suck at 4x games for similar reasons. The only Civ games I got really into were the Civ Revolution games, and I was always too embarrassed to admit that. PC gaming intimidates me in general because computers baffle and frustrate me in general. But rejecting something based on platform is kinda silly, so I try not to do that, at least.
I don’t know, I just feel like there’s giant “KEEP OUT” signs everywhere around this hobby. Maybe I’m just too old.

Re: General gaming superthread
I have games with hundreds of hours in them that I still suck at.
Sometimes it’s hard to shake the sense that I am Doing It Wrong (tm). But the only yardstick that matters is: was I having fun? And usually the answer is yes. Some of the funnest games in my library are the ones I suck at: they’re a challenge every time.
