So let's restart my thread with some Odyssey reaction. It's been a week, is this GOTY? Best Mario game of all time? Discuss! :flimflam:

(it will be commercially the best Mario game for Nintendo of all time, FWIW)

This is easily one of the best games of the year. I beat the main story fairly quickly, and now I'm just spending chunks of time grabbing bunches of moons everywhere, jumping from kingdom to kingdom. What really hits me is just how fun it is to just run around and explore. Some of the moons suck, sure, but pretty much all of them are just really fun to track down.

Yeah, I did the same, I'm on about ~650 moons now. If you're just starting out, as I said in the other thread, don't worry too much about getting all moons or regional coins in a world on your first go, beat the story missions, reach the target and get any extras you want, then move on to the next level. You do not want the final main story level spoiling, and you can't get a large quantity of moons/coins on your first go. Get enough regional coins to buy the costumes just because those will unlock a few bonus moons here and there, but don't worry too much about the souvenirs/stickers.

It's also really handy to know the mid-air throw hat -> dive into hat -> throw hat again -> dive again combo - it can give a lot of extra height and/or distance (depending on the kind of jump you started it from), and is really handy for getting to places without necessarily going the long way round, or to save yourself in a risky situation.

End game costume spoilers: are there any Moons that need the skeleton outfit? I'm guessing the Gold, (actual spoiler), and Bride/Groom ones are just for show, but I don't know about the skeleton one since that appears in the shopping menu much earlier.

EDIT: Also, if you have a Bowser amiibo (any Bowser will do - Smash/regular Mario/Skylanders/Wedding), and can't find some regional coins, hold right on the D-pad and scan him. If it dings, there's no purple coins left in that area, try a sub-area. If he roars, look around for a purple aura.

Oh shit, really? That's handy to know. I like the regional coins but it really sucks trying to track down those last ones in a given kingdom and you feel that you've already scoured every square inch of the kingdom to find the last 6 or so.

in at least two kingdoms, the last 3 coins i needed were just hanging off the edge of a cliff into the void somewhere :twonk:

I count at least three where this has been the case for me (Cascade, Sand, the first post-game bonus level). If you're missing coins and don't have a Bowser amiibo, wander around the edge of the level with the camera pointed over the edge, and chances are those will be some of them.

Yeah, same. I ended up buying the strategy guide after 100%-ing the Cap Kingdom - because I knew that the exploration to find some Moons would be incredibly tedious, and I'd much rather be doing the fun gameplay challenges rather than cursing because I can't find the last Moon even with Talkatoo/Uncle Amiibo hints (something like the second Metro Kingdom "Free Parking" one - I'd done the motor scooter challenge on top of New Donk City Hall, but had forgotten about it by the time I spotted the parking spot)

I'm in the middle of the...postgame? And still enjoying things.

Ceave has a nice youtube video that both gives some tips for advanced movement and talks about how well the game was designed.

I think even someone who is new to 3D Marios and refuses to learn any moves other than basic jump, wall jump, and the cap throws can probably still get all the moons (maybe not some of the racing moons?). But if you want to get into advanced moves a bit, it's fun and satisfying, and with practice I can do a fair amount of advanced movement chaining and it's pretty fun (and can let you beat Jill in some leaderboards).

My partner and I started playing Odyssey Co-Op recently. I decided I wouldn't rest until I got the 100 jump rope moon. Took me like 15 solid minutes of attempts, but I finally got to 105. :yay:

That one moon seems way more difficult than any of the others yet.

i got that one in a single attempt :v: the timing doesn't seem to change at all beyond 50 jumps. i'm sure someone can and will find a way to automate the inputs for an unreasonably high score

on the other hand, there's a beach volleyball minigame where i had to exploit 2-player mode (due to cappy having way better acceleration) to get a moon there

there is also a pair of highly bullshit post-game moons that require you overcome mario's obscure movement quirks to maintain enough speed. there is another pair of moons where you're given a scooter to do the exact same challenge, and that one's reasonable but still not a walk in the park

I did the 100 volleyball hits one on my first attempt. It was so much easier than the jump roping.

I'm actually playing through Super Mario Land 3D! I never finished it and all this Odyssey talk put me in the mood for it, it's still really good.

I'll definitely buy Odyssey eventually of course :-P

Had a monster play session today, and ended up 100%-ing everything I was missing (other than getting the last few outfits from the shop).

I really don't regret using the strategy guide for some of those moons, with a special shoutout to anything in Deep Woods, since you can't even use Hint Toad/Uncle Amiibo for those.

Jump Rope Genius was my last non-shopping moon. Here's my tips for that one while it's still fresh:
Change the music track to something quiet to make it easier to hear the audio cues. I started with Metro: Outdoor Cafe, but later switched this to the Slots music.
I found it easier to use the Pro Controller rather than the Joy-Con.
Approach from the Squawks Avenue signpost, finding a camera angle that works well for you.

Up to about ~30-35, do a full height jump when you hear the "hey"
Between ~30-35 and 49, start reducing the amount of time you hold the button - you can't rely on the audio cues at this point since it's already too fast.
Once you hit 50, watch Mario's feet carefully. The split second they hit the ground, do the shortest hop you can. Eventually you build up enough rhythm and you get it.
---

Mildly disappointed by the lack of Luigi as the 100% reward - Green Mario just isn't the same.

EDIT: For anyone having trouble with the 500 moon bonus level, if you can get up to the Glydon section, there's a bit of an exploit to skip past the deadly lasers/Pokio parts.

Hopefully they'll re-release 3D World on the Switch. I'm having a blast with 3D Land, the post game levels are super good.

I beat it without doing that, but that trick would have saved me like an hour of tries, maybe more. But hey, I got plenty of coins for buying a thing that costs a lot of coins.

As it turns out, there is also a swim-in-air glitch for the 500 moon level that lets you skip the entire thing (skip near the end if you're not interested in seeing other glitches), and it's even easier than the Glydon exploit.

I struggled with Jump Rope as well, but eventually got the timing down and remembered not to panic as the timing does not change after 50 jumps.

Others swear volleyball is harder but I got that pretty quick, it's fun to do precise cap throwing. Definitely a "two types of people in the world" situation.

I'm more annoyed about the tacked-on 999 and infinite shop moons than any single mission in the game, but I'll rant about that another time.

-new Mario Tennis game, track record hasn't been there on Mario sports titles this decade so this is another wait & see despite the positive of a Story Mode
-Rabbids story DLC is set for "spring", has DK coming as playable
-Odyssey DLC has Luigi "Balloon" Mode which is basically a hide & seek game. Free, February, probably only the beginning for this game
-Tropical Freeze is getting a port to Switch on May 4. Features Funky Kong as an easier option.

Just hit 100% for this game!
Also been doing a lot of Koopa speedrunning, I'm aiming to hit top 1k rank on all of them (already broke it on Sand/Snow/Mushroom, and am very close on Lake/Luncheon/Moon).

Luigi's Balloon World is out! It's the sort of thing you'll probably play a few times and then not go back to, but it's also the absolute fastest way to grind cash if you've got a place where you can get a good streak going*. I went from like 1500 coins to 5000, bought the Sunshine outfit, went from there to 9999, bought the skeleton outfit, went to 9999 again, bought pretty much all of the remaining outfits I needed.

Unfortunately, it also seems like some people are placing balloons out of bounds when they can, so it's very easy to get an impossible challenge unless you also know the out of bounds glitches.

* For me it's Metro Kingdom; there's only a limited number of hiding places around New Donk City Hall and no out of bounds stuff, so as long as there's a balloon near there it's easy to zip up the powerline to the right of the hall and continue as needed from there. The rest of Metro Kingdom is not so great for me.

Today's Mario-related news from the Direct: Luigi's Mansion and M&L: Bowser's Inside Story getting 3DS rereleases. Mario Tennis Aces getting pushed as a major title, seems to be the most developed Mario sports title in awhile. Nothing on Odyssey DLC, they opted to focus on Splatoon DLC for now.

EDIT: WarioWare getting a fresh release on 3DS, Captain Toad getting a rerelease on Switch with a bit new content.

Man, I'd be way more interested in Luigi's Mansion if the remake was coming to the Switch in HD. I don't really care about getting a worse looking version of the game on the 3DS. Stop releasing games I want on the Switch on the 3DS, Nintendo.

Watch, next we're going to get a Super Mario Sunshine remake but it'll be on the 3DS.

Mario Tennis Aces, though, looks killer. And I'm so glad it has a "simple mode." Mario Tennis 64 is still the best Mario Tennis game and that's what I want from Mario Tennis: a solid, mostly normal, tennis experience. I don't need things like rackets with health bars and final smash-like moves. I just want a good, solid tennis game with Mario characters.

If we get a Super Mario Sunshine remake, I imagine it'd come on the Switch and would be remade on Odyssey's engine. The 3DS just wouldn't do justice to the original's looks; I mean, its water still looks good after all these years.

My thing with Luigi's Mansion is that even at this point, they're still remaking GC games instead of committing to a GC virtual console on Switch. So many of the GC's best games remain trapped on the console, and there's no way that Nintendo will remake all of them. Dolphin should not be the only way to play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on modern hardware.

And I understand why, they can charge full price for a remake or enhanced port, and can't really do that for an emulated copy. But still.

I half expect them to announce Wind Waker HD Switch in another Direct

As far as Mario goes this E3, the only thing is Super Mario Party. It looks promising, going back to 4 players on a board, no vehicles, and stars/coins.

Mario Tennis Aces is out in 10 days and also looks solid.

On Nintendo's E3 press kit site, there are entries for Luigi's Mansion 3DS and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story remake, but there's barely any assets for either, so I don't think we'll get much news if any on these. Yoshi Switch has been confirmed to not be appearing at all this E3 either.

In short, Smash seems to be the overwhelming focus and the only game of interest for this thread out of E3 is Super Mario Party.

Super Mario 64 is now fully completable with 0x A presses, with some caveats (any% only, and this glitch requires the Wii VC version)

Today's Direct had a good chunk of new Mario stuff:

-Luigi's Mansion 3 in development for Switch for 2019. Most likely by Next Level Games. 0:14
-Yoshi's Crafted World has a Spring 2019 window currently for Switch. 24:06
-New Super Mario Bros U getting a port to Switch with a Deluxe package. Toadette & Nabbit added as playable characters. Both are easy mode characters - Nabbit has an infinite Star, Toadette has a special power-up to turn into Peachette (yeah.... it's weird as hell lol) and can jump-float and is impervious to any pit/lava. 1/11/19. 10:46

Super Mario Party is pretty soon now, October 5, and the Bowser's Inside Story remake has been dated for Jan 11, 2019.

I looked at the Bowser's Inside Story port and couldn't help but notice that it said it's going to be in 2D only. I was surprised, since the M&L engine (assuming there is one) supported 3D for Dream Team and Paper Jam. Did the Superstar Saga port also ignore 3D?

WarioWare Gold, for however much that counts as a Mario game, was also entirely in 2D. Maybe Nintendo literally just does not give a shit anymore.

They decided to go with redrawing the 2D maps for SS and BIS rather than recreating them in 3D, making getting accurate depth info much harder. :pinkieshrug:

They’re doing an in-game event in Odyssey. It started yesterday and runs through the 7th. If you can find 39 Pixel Luigis and Pixel Captain Toads at the festival area in New Donk City, you’ll get some extra coins. Nothing major, but it might be fun to check out.

Mario Maker 2 is coming out in June 2019, with refined features including a 2D take on Mario 3D World. Banzai Bills, Sledge Bros, and most importantly... slopes.

this announcement was everything i ever wanted and more

the new feature i am most interested in right now is the "custom scroll" seen at 0:50. not so much the feature itself, but whether it's a sign that more consideration was put into having control over the screen scrolling and maybe even the object load range. in particular i always wanted to be able to lay out rooms with fixed camera positions that won't scroll into adjacent rooms, and preferably avoid things like bowser flames from crossing over when they're not supposed to be loaded (in MM1 the flames could spawn at such a massive distance from the actual bowser object that any inclusion of it was just a massive PITA to build around)

Basically, no (or very limited) online, no Mystery Mushroom, and 100(-ish?) Nintendo made levels with optional challenges that are the main reason to get the 3DS version.

I've debated getting it just for that reason, since they're apparently meant to be really different than other recent 2D Mario design.

EDIT: Checking the Mario Wiki - you can do 100 Mario Challenge, but you can't upload courses or search by ID. Also, some building elements are locked off by progress in the Nintendo made levels - Pink Coins and Bowser Jr. requiring you to beat every single one, for example.

Ended up buying SMM3DS last night after that post, I've put my thoughts into a thread here.

Basically I really hope the challenges system is in SMM2 as well and accessible to the community, along with SMM2 keeping the more interactive tutorials. I hope there are also Nintendo created levels in SMM2, but not to lock so many parts behind them.
