Firstly, that game looks heckin rad, very rad indeed. I'm surprised, though, that they aren't making a switch bundle for poor people like me who still don't have one. :v:

Ah well, guess I'll just be getting in on this way late. Make a new console so I can afford this one, Nintendo!!

The rumors say Nintendo will make a Switch Lite with the Joy-Cons always attached, meant primarily or possibly exclusively for undocked play, and priced cheaper to fill the 2DS's niche of a gaming system for families with kids or gamers on a budget. It might come this year, what with the 3DS family dying and all.

So the confirmation that online can't be done with friends has caused a pretty big uproar. Even Pokemon S&S seemingly has online w/ friends for the new raid battles...

Is any sort of multiplayer with friends still assumed by default to be done locally? Seems like Nintendo has seriously struggled with that and only their younger and/or more Western development teams have ever gotten the message.

yes, it's a cultural gap between Japan and other regions on what is the regular "multiplayer" option

not much Mario this E3. Luigi's Mansion 3 is a main focus though and looks really good.

Also more on Mario Maker 2, just two weeks away now

Mario Maker 2 is hecking fun y'all

the story mode is really neat to get little bites of plattforming in and the writing is surprisingly funny/snarky

Made another level:

This one's pretty tough, but a lot more forgiving, but I've also been playing it for hours now so...

Edit: Reuploaded with 2nd checkpoint and a couple of tweaks after feedback.

Not too much Mario in this Direct. Luigi's Mansion 3 looks great, out 10/31. another Mario & Sonic is coming, it's probably a step above shovelware now, but still meh.

Mario Maker 2 friends online update is still MIA.

I'm so sad there was no Mario Maker 2 news. I want to know if there's going to be any new styles coming down the clear pipe.

Not much going on for Mario in 2020 officially yet, but Mario Maker 2 is getting one last big boost tomorrow.

I really love the way the SMB2 mushroom changes things up, so I've already made a single world that explores it a bit.

Unfortunately, the world maker is tied down by excessive limitations that undermine the spirit of the actual Mario games that had world maps. Hell, SMB1 had warp zones and you won't even find that much.

Let's start with the fact that you can only have one "super world" uploaded at a time and work from there: This means that for all intents and purposes, you cannot make and share individual worlds, as they must all be forcibly linearly linked together into your single precious upload slot. There is no freeform way to travel between these worlds, and the only way a player can even see beyond the first world is by beating the mandatory castle stage to move on to the next one.

Compound to that the fact that individual worlds are incredibly small. 7x4 dimensions, five courses, and a single set of warp pipes. I would have greatly preferred to be able to upload single worlds with a larger map as opposed to one chain of bite-sized worlds with very little diversity. The most you can do here is split the four non-castle courses into alternate routes, or make harder courses optional and/or a shortcut to the castle. The above world I made for instance does a 1-3 split, because the single-stage path involves skillful use of the SMB2 mushroom that I wouldn't expect most people to figure out. Which brings me to...

Every course that is part of a super world must have been uploaded as an individual course before the super world itself can be uploaded. This in itself precludes the possibility of secret exits and paths, as well as anything that would involve taking a powerup from one course into another. And yes, the option to have this simple feature is just not there, even if you were required to make every course the same game style or have Mario downgrade from any style-specific powerup when starting a course of a different style.

With all of that in mind, a "super world" is neither super nor is it really even a world. It's a collection of courses, every bit as disposable and interchangeable as they've ever been. You still cannot create a course as a piece of something bigger than itself, which is where basically all of the appeal in having a world maker was to begin with.

They really need to add onto the system to really let it take off. I'd say there's a few things that need to happen:

1. Remove the 5 level limit per world, that's ludicrous, there are no mario games with an overworld that have only 5 levels in a world.

2. Allow upload of a world to be treated as its own thing so you can actually reap benefits from the ability to set up a linear or non-linear flow to your world.

3. Add a secret exit trigger so you can have secret levels

Things that'd be nice:

1. A super mario 3 style for the overworld

2. triggers and stuff for the overworld so you can have levels reveal themselves and things happen rather than the current "the path colors in, that's it" system.

More stuff would be good too, but this is my wishlist :v If nintendo doesn't update it with at least some of this functionality, worlds are kinda pointless at the moment :v:
