My new computer arrived, and it's hella good so far! It's refreshing to have something that works fast again.

After working on and off on it for probably over 3 years, with a lot of work in the last 6 months, I finally submitted my second single-author math paper. I'm very glad its done and also going to move on to a million other interests that got side-tracked while I focused on this paper.

Congrats! :yay:

Does it have an extremely long title like most academic papers?

Thanks, you two. There's still a long wait for the review process and there might be a lot I have to change (or it might not be accepted at all), but I feel good all the same.

I don't know what you consider long. The title is longer than average for my subfield, but not by much. You can pretend it's "A Generalization of Twelve Equal Temperament for N:1 Interval Scales".

Hell yeah! :yay: Please don’t feel ashamed that you had to ask for help because everyone else around you failed you. It’s fine to ask for/need help when you need it.

About a week ago, we noticed our dog was not feeling hot. We took him to the vet, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He had high white blood cell count as well.

The vet treated him, however, and he's acting like his old self! Very much relieved that he's recovering

Small things like this really perks me up :flutterunsmith:

Tomorrow is my first day of work. I'm so excited. Today's the last day I'll have /can panhandle. I'm just hoping that today I can make enough to make sure my family can eat during the week and that I can get a shower or two at the truck stop. Those are like $12. Wish me luck!

In the last month or so I've generally gone in pretty hard with self-improvement. Trying to seriously learn another language (Spanish), getting back on my diet, looking to find a better job, and now I'm uh

Writing a book. :-I

That it is to say, I'm actually in the process of typing out the story. It's far too early to really say anything about it, other than it's about space pirates, but yeah, Blargh's writing a book.

made some plans to actually come and visit my mother/sister on the 10th and have a stay at their place over mother's day weekend. my father was surprisingly mature about it and agreed to take care of Angel's needs in my absence. they only live maybe 20 60 minutes away but it's still been so many years since i've actually seen my mother that it's kind of surreal. i am excited

i still have sort of conflicted feelings regarding the circumstances that caused me to choose to live with my father over her. my relationship with her was always better, but my family on her side is a lot more rustic and a lot less wealthy. in the end my 13-or-so-year-old mind had to choose financial stability despite my father's side of the family being very alienating and hateful. the anxiety and stress about my future were already through the roof and i just wanted to get through schooling without a hitch

since that time, my mother and sister have faced a period of homelessness in part due to one of the California wildfires, during which my mother had to deal with getting our dog put down because he was having seizures and biting out of fear. in our last conversation my mother also claimed to have nearly died on multiple different occasions due to: mold poisoning, lung damage from bleach, and blood loss from thyroid problems. the way she mentions these things so casually doesn't surprise me, but it's kind of sobering after spending so long with the more privileged parent who loses his shit when anything so much as threatens to scratch or dent one of his vehicles. one fears nothing and the other fears everything

consciously i can never believe i made the wrong choice to begin with, because the years to come went a hell of a long way in shaping my very identity and there's no telling what the alternative was, but i'm always going to feel at least some guilt for all the times i wanted to get back in touch after the fact and then psyched myself out of it

either way, it's finally happening!

So, I've been chugging along with my daily writing. Not going fast enough to keep pace with other people, but things are moving, at least. I just completed chapter 2 of my story today, with the whole thing totaling about 3750 words so far, which is over a thousand more words than I ever managed on previous attempts on this story. I'm still fighting the urge to just up and delete everything because it's awful, as that's how most of my past attempts have ended up. I'm doing my best not to do that this time, though who knows how long I'll hold up.

I don't have any idea when what I have will be in a showable state, though. My motivation in writing is to make something that someone else will enjoy, but at the same time I'm terrified of someone reading my work and not enjoying it. Still, I'm happy that I made it this far at all, and hopefully things will continue to work for me.

I finally finished doing all the pencils for a 44-page comic story. I started it back in January (would have finished sooner, but the Kickstarter slowed me down). I still need to ink the last 5 pages, then color them, but the hard part's done.

Really happy to get it over with, since I'll be away on a trip next week :partyL

posting a little trip report for closure

my stay at mother's went well! it's a rather messy and cluttered place because even though my sister lost everything in a fire, my mother had moved in a shitload of boxes she had in storage containing all sorts of old unsorted crap from when we all lived in a big 2-story house and before that. still though, it's a very cozy and friendly place and my mother is always fun to chat with. my niece of 4 years is also adorable, super hyperactive (my sister calls her "crackhead" and "tweaker") and really into disney princesses, barbie, mermaids and all that girly jazz. my nephew mostly just stayed in his room cussing at Fortnite

they've got a dog and a cat there. Gizmo is a shih tzu with a dark coat and a broken yapper. it sounds hilarious when he tries to bark, but mostly he's just clingy and will lay on whatever shoes or laundry he can find on the floor. he's apparently got bad allergies and dry skin and needs to be medicated to avoid feeling constant irritation. the cat is a siamese named Smokey, and as one might expect he's a total murder machine. he also comes by for attention and sat right in my lap purring a few times. he lets my niece pick him up like a ragdoll, but according to my sister he'd attack anyone else for trying to do the same

my mother's icelandic pancakes are still to die for, and there's a local coffee shop up there that makes some killer hot chocolate using Ghirardelli :memories: my sister and her niece sometimes get their drinks for free there since my sister is something of a social butterfly

my mother and i went and saw Detective Pikachu. we missed the first ~20 minutes because i forgot to take my wallet from my bag, so we had to go back and get it. we didn't seem to miss anything important though; it was a really good watch

it was just a really nice time overall. i actually brought my Nintendo Switch and laptop in case i got bored, and ended up hardly doing anything with them at all, though i still killed some time here and there with phone games. this side of my family is also very accepting so my sister and mother were just casually asking about trans stuff here and there. 11/10 would stay again, and perhaps bring my bunny around next time
