S08E05: Grannies Gone Wild

Post by Wayoshi (?) » Wed Apr 11, 2018 11:29 am

Granny Smith and her elderly friends are headed to Las Pegasus, and Rainbow Dash tags along as a chaperone so she can ride the best rollercoaster ever before it closes. sUnfortunately, following Applejack's caretaking rules for the "Golden Horseshoe Gals" keep Dash so busy, she doubts she'll even get to see the rollercoaster!
This thread is for discussion of the episode. This episode airs at 11:30 Eastern / 8:30 Pacific on Saturday, April 14!

Official preview clips and images are okay to post, as is speculation about the episode.

Excited for Rainbow Dash antics.

Don't really care about Granny Smith.

And I'm pretty sure this was a King of the Hill episode. :ponder:

Come on, Rainbow Dash. Surely the Wonderbolts pay you well enough to where you can travel on your own time and your own dime, right? It's a lot better than having to stick to someone else's schedule.

I wonder if the moral here will be that Rainbow Dash learns to follow through on what she promises even at personal cost to her, or that Applejack learns that she mustn't plan overly hard for the sake of her family (see Apple Family Reunion and Somepony to Watch Over Me).

Speculative question: if you could fly, would roller coasters still be fun?

I love those animatics so so much. I think they're all different storyboard artists too, as those lines and expressions look different from the previous animatics.

Anyway, this episode is gonna own, I'll watch it this afternoon.

OK episode.

I wasn't really enjoying the granny antics. Because there were none. They just wanted to do their thing, and Applejack was being too fussy. They were kind of boring.

Rainbow Dash freaking out was fun.

Okay, I loved this episode. Applejack the protective matriarch is an angle we've seen quite a bit, but crossed with obsessive, high-energy Rainbow Dash it becomes a fresh dynamic. We've seen Applejack get Granny Smith out of (actual) danger before, but even I think she would've had the sense to not ruin a magic show over it. Props to G.M. Berrow for another great ep.

If Big Mac usually accompanied Granny Smith and her friends, I wonder if Applejack never gave that advice (assuming he'd be just as "caring" as she would) or if she did and he ignored it. Maybe since he so learned to listen to others, he was able to see that the four of them could handle themselves as well as they did. I guess what I'm saying is, at some point before the series ends, hopefully there's an episode where Applejack finally is able to let go of her family so much.

Let's take a moment to appreciate how responsible Rainbow Dash is. Faced with wanting to go on a trip her first thought is to her responsibilities to Twilight's school and dutifully gets a sub to cover her. :3:

:modesty: :ehhh: Meanwhile, these two just took off to Manehattan last week without a word.

A highly enjoyable RD episode. The juxtaposition of these golden mares and RD was an inspired one.

It’s a gray, rainy weekend and I watched “Green Room” last night, all of which means I need colorful friendhorses 150% more than usual.

• “Wild Blue Yonder is really good value”
• If it’s so good, how come it’s closing? Answer me that, pony show.
• Dash imitating the slow up-crawl of the coaster. Takes talent to do that!
• And it’s fun to see our grown-up main characters still act like big stupid kids sometimes. :3:
• Dash should take her class on a :spoiler: “field trip” to the roller coaster. Say it’s a physics lesson. Conflict solved! My high school did that.
• Cranky Flank Creme :vomitpony:
• Dash holding the list is a fun use of winghands.
• How has MLP:FIM been running for 27 seasons and they’re just now doing a “Rainbow Dash is forced to take it slow” plot? It seems like the most obvious idea ever, but the execution’s really fun.
• Hard to picture a pony climbing a tree.
• Ha, the floating head of Applejack.
• Tell me the story of the bellhop pony who learned his special destiny was hauling other ponies’ luggage.
• Holy smokes, the grannies pulled a Frodo Baggins!
• Now she must hunt them down one by one. It’s like Blade Runner, but with even shorter lifespans. :granny:
• Commercials. What is this? The Littlest Pet Dimension?
• The worst trauma in young Rainbow’s life: someone called her “lady”.
• Dash, maybe you should use your power of “remembering things” to recall where each granny SAID EARLIER they wanted to go. :facehoof:
• Aw, Rainbow Dash, you suck.
:granny: “appytite”
:twasnothin: “rolly-coaster”
• Is there only one DJ in all of Equestria?
• Hey, grannies got needs too. :granny:
:eyebrow: “Do I really have to say anything?”
• I don’t get why the magicians were nervous, nobody revealed the trick. :fluttershrug:
• Ha, they buy smoke bombs at the same store as Trixie.
• As always, the true villain is Applejack.

WELL: this one was really fun and Ashleigh Ball slayed it, and my only red mark was that the ending made no sense, since Dash seemed to think the moral is old folks can be cool, but really it’s “Applejack is wrong about everything”. Eh, that’s OK because this episode wasn’t about the plot, it was a showcase for silly hijinks and it did it pretty well. :good:

How would a roller coaster work with somepony like a Wonderbolt? Don't they train daily to get use to the free falls, rapid turns and high speed flight? Like a NASCAR driver getting excited to go try go-karts...

:rariwhat:
I'm under the impression that it had more to do with peer pressure than anything else. The fact that it came from the Wonderbolts of all people must've made Dash interpret that this was a roller coaster worthy of the Wonderbolts. That's probably where the hype came from.

It's also why I thought the pay off fell a little flat. It seemed like any other roller-coaster to me, just with a clouds theme.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, isn't it peculiar that they went with that design for ponified Morty? He doesn't look any older than the CMC and Morty's 14.
Well, based on the fact that the CMC still attend primary school, that would put them between 10 and 12 at this point.

Eh. Honestly, it's really more about pony designs right now. They seem to be very discreet and fit into rigid categories: baby, child, adult and elderly. The designs just aren't very nuanced, is what I'm saying.

Correct, they're flash assets.

Kinda like the main six are the exact body frame. Except twilight is now slightly bigger.

Which is true in the ways of the Ork.

Writers tossing around some little thoughts or tidbits that are not canon in any way is not new. Geez, lighten up. If you really think someone would violate their NDA and enjoy losing their job just to tweet a silly idea, you are waaaay mistaken about how these jobs work.

Yeah, if Trixie’s parentage were a mystery somehow crucial to the plot of the series (to the extent this series has one), we’d expect the writers to keep quiet about it.

Here, though, there’s nothing to spoil. It’s just a funny sight gag.
