S08E06: Surf and/or Turf

Post by Wayoshi (?) » Wed Apr 18, 2018 2:31 pm

The Cutie Mark Crusaders try to help a young Hippogriff figure out where he belongs. With family members on Mt. Aris as well as Sea Pony relatives in Seaquestria, he can't decide where to live.
This thread is for discussion of the episode. This episode airs at 11:30 Eastern / 8:30 Pacific on Saturday, April 21!

Official preview clips and images are okay to post, as is speculation about the episode.

I guess some of the hippogriffs went back to being hippogriffs and some decided to stay sea ponies?

:sweet: What if you just cut the child in half?
:ohboy: Then part of him can be in both places!

OK episode.

Feels like they wanted to do a divorced parents episode, but didn't really want to commit to all that entails. The solution was oversimplified for such a complicated issue.

I mean, the solution was the joke "Why not do both, they're literally right next to each other".

As an episode that was just a story in Equestria (or rather, right next to it), it was pretty good. But as an episode that clearly wanted to have a real world message, it fell flat.

Song was great.

Also, Griffins are better than Hippogriffs.

A good episode. The Hippogriffs are an interesting race, and I enjoyed the worldbuilding.

They did a good job of touching on the idea that kids sometimes feel they have to choose between thier parents in a divorce situation. The song did a good job of that as well.

I emphasized with Scootaloo - she can't fly like RD but she can swim as well as any seapony. It's easy to understand why she liked being in the underwater world. Image

Was this supposed to be an allegory for kids dealing with divorced parents? That seemed to be the rough consensus amongst the #ponyday crew, but I'm not really sure this episode's lesson ("you need not limit yourself to one, you can come and go between both") can really apply that widely to broken-up families in general. At least it seemed like it was aimed at older kids who'd be starting to have the sort of individual agency to make such decisions; after all, Terramar certainly seemed teenage-ish, as do all the Crusaders now.

I'm glad we're getting to see more of Mount Aeris and Seaquestria now. The movie left them (and other places like Klugetown, but I'd be surprised if we go back there) without being fleshed out too much, so it's nice the show is filling them in more.

While I was writing that post, I got a look at the credits (thanks Aramek):
Image

In past seasons, Madeleine Peters always sang for Scootaloo, but here Scootaloo's singing role has been recast. I wonder if there was a production issue that required a soundalike to fill in or if she's just getting too old to completely play Scootaloo anymore.

I thought Madeleine Peters was an adult. Maybe this was a song she just couldn't do?

A perfectly fine CMC episode with Princess Twilight Sparkle off in the distance doing all the fun stuff.
While it is regrettable that we (probably) will never see The Movie characters, it is still neat to see the hippogriffs on their own turf.

They are some pretty horse birds. :awesomedash:

it was pretty good. "Intents and porpoises" was the best joke. I kind of wanted them to go with the divorced parents, but the message still works. Liked the song.

It was totally divorced parents allegory without beating you over the head with it. It could work for just about any other sort of BE ON THIS SIDE OR THAT thing which is also super relevant these days.

Overall, I liked this episode. For once the plot isn't trying to force a conflict and that feels very refreshing.
This show had quite a lot of things about it that's unprecedented: giving us a tour of where the hippogriffs live, their way of life, the scenery. We also got to see a side to Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo we haven't yet seen with how they enjoyed their new environment be it Seaquestria or that place Sweetie Belle enjoyed. Can't remember the name off the top of my head.

I'll be curious about how this episode will age once hippogriffs, Seaquestria, etc become mundane -- and I'm sure it will at some point.

I'm guessing people here have already gotten used to the new Changeling designs?

This was a pretty good episode. Definitely the best we've had so far this season. I was wondering if Terramar was going to wind up growing into some sort of emissary role, bridging the gaps between the sea and land hippogriffs. They swerved away at the last minute, but it did seem like they were setting up for more animosity between the two groups early on.

I do wonder about Scootaloo's singing voice. In the past, she hasn't really gotten to perform much, so she was always a backup singer. But... if you've got Madeleine Peters in the studio already...

:amazed: I don't know if I'd like being a hippogriff. Part bird, part pony?
:scootatrue: I'm happy with just my pony parts, thanks!
:saddershy:

Sweetie Belle rushing off to the Harmonizing Heights had me in stitches.

That's why I wondered if there was some sort of production problem where the writers decided to add a song later and only Claire Corlett was able to make it back in. The show has joked about Scootaloo being a bad singer before (Flight to the Finish, after they sang "Hearts Strong as Horses" there was one line where Scootaloo started singing it again and she sounded worse than in the actual song), but I always took that as 50% a joke about how songs in FiM are slightly less "real" than the rest of the show and 50% a joke about how she and Apple Bloom are bad singers vs. Sweetie Belle. Maybe Madeleine Peters isn't quite as good a singer IRL, but even then I don't think that alone would be enough reason to bring in a soundalike who doesn't really sound alike.

Ooh, forgot about the salmon juice part. Yeah, that was weird.

Another thing you reminded me about the episode was Terramar. As someone who knows Spanish, his name immediately stuck out to me. Terramar could be interpreted as coming from Tierra Mar in Spanish, which respectively translate to "Earth" and "Sea." Although it could be a different language where just Terra Mar translate directly to "Earth" and "Sea."

Speaking of writing, one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet: The writer for this week is new to MLP -- Brian Hohlfeld. He's written for Transformers: Rescue Bots, Barbie, and Winnie the Pooh. He was also a voice in the old Sesame Street movie, "Follow That Bird."

A pretty good choice in my book, given how difficult it is for new writers to dive in this late in the series.

His Twitter account.

• I wonder if later on, any random ponies will be summoned by the map. Like there’ll be a friendship emergency in Whinnypeg and only Junebug and Pony Joe can solve it. And they’re Kramering into the castle day and night and interrupting Twilight’s sudoku hour.
• I wonder if the trip still takes them through the desert and that Samurai Jack animal town.
• Field trips in ponyland probably mean going to a literal field and standing around benevolently. :good:
• You’re visiting a mountain, Scootaloo, the helmet’s a good idea but the scooter’s probably not too useful.
• Pegasi basically have the same parts as hippogriffs.
• Stop staring at random butts, Apple Bloom.
• “anygriff”
• Ah, so some hippogriffs followed the summons of Ulmo to Valinor, others tarried on the journey and others turned back; these last were the so-called Dark Hippogriffs of whom few legends speak. Consult Appendix F for a full chart.
• It’s a great place to live, but I wouldn’t want to visit!
• omg BABY HIPPOGRIFFS
• Oh god, it’s a hippogriff supremacist parade :nnngh:
• They seem more impressed that Twilight teaches Silverstream than that she saved their whole species.
• salmon juice? :vomitpony:
• Sweetie Belle enjoying the heights is an unusually dialogue-free moment in this show.
• Yeah I’ll say it, sea pony fillies are adorable.
• I bet Twilight could screech like a champion if there was a trophy at stake.
• Song!
• Scootaloo pun :facehoof:
• Ha, anytime the CMC disagree among themselves it’s great.
• So is it just kind of assumed the parents are divorced I guess?
• Oh no, Sweetie Belle has an idea.
• So the solution is, there was never a problem in the first place!
• Apple Bloom :fluttershock:

Well, "terra" is latin for earth and "mare" means sea, so there's that.

(that reminds me, though: Terramar is actually the name of Earthsea in the Spanish translation of Ursula K. LeGuin's books)
