Re: doom thread
you're missing out on a ton if you haven't played all the doom 2 wads in the world, there are... so many.
also my big unpopular opinion is that Heretic and Hexen are even better but most people disagree

I'mma let you finish, but Marathon is the greatest old-school FPS of all time!
No, but seriously, I do think that Marathon deserves discussion in a DOOM thread, as they were extremely close contemporaries. Marathon came out about a year after DOOM, and was developed by Bungie, and you can super easily see the influences that would carry over into their later and more famous games Halo and Destiny.
Raw gameplay-wise, Marathon and DOOM are pretty similar. Both are super fast-paced sprite-based FPS games from before the days of mouse-look (though obviously you can play them nowadays with whatever controls you like). While I have to give DOOM the edge in terms of weapon and enemy variety (Marathon leans a bit too much on strength-denoting enemy recolors), if there's something in the Marathon trilogy that sets it apart from shooters of its time, and even some today, it's the story. First of all, it actually has one. And it's not tucked away in a manual or guide or design doc somewhere. The story and lore of Marathon's universe is delivered to the player through text terminals scattered throughout its maps, with both explicit instructions to you from other characters, as well as completely optional backstory and technical information hidden as rewards for exploration. (This is why the achievement for finding all the hidden terminals in Halo: CE Anniversary is called "Marathon Man," by the way.) And there's actual characters, too: the three AIs of the ship you're on. They both guide and hinder you in various ways, with one in particular, Durandal, having developed a twisted sense of humor after going rampant (another concept that would later be reused in Halo). He's really a delight to read, and probably set the stage for later sarcastic, jaded AIs to come, like GLaDOS.
Overall I highly recommend the Marathon trilogy for anyone who like DOOM-era shooters, and the games are 100% completely free and open source on almost every platform imaginable, so there's really no excuse not to give them a try. Just be warned that the third game, Marathon Infinity, gets a bit... trippy, story wise.
Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread. I just really love these games and will take any opportunity to share them.

Re: doom thread
I played Doom 2 over the modem with my friend. As in, he had to call my house with his computer, while I yelled "NOBODY PICK UP THE PHONE!" Then my computer would answer and we'd play together until my sister picked up the phone.

I got into doom with the old Doom 1 shareware, and i remember playing it on I'm Too Young To Die a bunch with the PC Speaker, so this was all I got for sound:
I still have a nostalgic fondness for those sounds today
