Well, she's not very good at reference outside of her subject specialty (though Pinkie seems to have a knack for finding books), and we've never seen her do acquisitions or cataloging or any of the other things that you need to do in a library. As the dragon responsible for shelving and fetching books, Spike is about the closest thing Ponyville has to a real librarian, and if he can't seem to help Twilight with her research queries, he's not very good at that.

Dear Princess Celestia,

The Ponyville Library desperately needs a full-time librarian! Just yesterday, I went to look up our local noise ordinances (the business next door keeps hosting loud parties late at night and it's disturbing my sleep) and I had to page through the badly organized and half-decayed government documents for three hours before I found what I needed! This is only the latest in a series of reference problems I've had. The pony you've sent there isn't much use in this respect - even if she did have the time to help me, she certainly doesn't have the expertise needed to acquire, catalog, and maintain the collection. Enclosed is a check for 1 million bits; please use it to endow a Master's program in Library Science at Canterlot School for Gifted Unicorns. If we Equestrians are to safeguard our cherished history, laws, arts, and civic life, we need quality librarianship in each and every one of our fair cities and towns!

But they're so very inadequate! I am going to graduate school to learn all the things I need to know in order to be a competent librarian - how to catalog and organize materials and find answers to people's questions and stretch an (almost certainly) limited budget to meet the library's needs efficiently and make sure my patrons know all the stuff I and my library can do for them. I wrote out a huge rant and deleted it, but long story short, librarians don't have a lot of time to read books - they're too busy for that! :v:

Late to the party but as Rarity has always been my favorite pony, this episode fucking ruled.

Sweetie Belle has moved up to my favorite CMC as well. First off, the slower, S1 style pace is nice. As epic as the Discord/Luna episodes were, and as fun as Twilight's freakout was, it felt like it was all getting a little too meta and didn't have enough character development of other ponies. With episodes like this spliced in between, it's obvious that the heart of the show is still there.

Also, both Applejack and Rarity were hurting for some character development. Hell, Applejack still is. But it was nice seeing them interact, and Applebloom's jealousy was hilarious. I never had siblings but watch over my SO's young daughter on the weekends, and our bond is more sisterly(aunt-ley?) than motherly so I can totally get where Rarity is coming from. And I don't think there's anyone alive who doesn't remember back when they were a young, stupid kid who was bored to tears and full of energy, wanting to direct that towards helping your big sister/cousin/parents/whatever...only to fuck everything up :ohboy:

I personally know several fans who originally disliked Rarity but were converted by the end of this episode just from the crafty shit she pulled towards the end, and willingness to get mud all over her just to make her sister happy. The macaroni-gem drawing scene with Rarity got me teary-eyed, too.

Overall, a very heartwarming episode and my second favorite this season. (Luna's being first still because, come on, Luna. And Zecora.)

At the end of the episode when Rarity says "Let's go to the spa!"
The ponies laugh and she replies.
"I really mean it this time!"

Is it because Rarity took a (non imported) mud bath which is totally against her nature and she wants to be clean or is it just an "Oh Rarity, you card!" sort of thing?

Yeah, it nice to see the rest of them have a life outside of Twilight and magic and booksbooksbooks and owl and dragon and fretting and books. And she isn't kind of wedged in, like in Stare Master.

Last episode has a legendary monster that turns out to be the real queenprincess of the night returning after being imprisoned for a thousand years. The previous episode involved Twilight upending the town.
And the episode before THAT involved upending the fabric of reality.

But this is as mundane as it gets, despite two of the characters being magical white unicorns.

I figured it's because she always suggests going to the spa, whatever the circumstances, and everyone has come to treat it as a joke. Also a sorta-callback to the things she was suggesting doing with Sweetie Belle.

A subtle moment I really liked was how Rarity immediately understood Applejack's pie metaphor. Usually in TV when someone explains something with a metaphor you have to sit through the rigmarole of the other character not understanding it at first.

When I first saw this, I thought that people would be bugged by the biggest most direct drama bomb yet in the show. We had some bad ones, like LBYS, GIYC was close, Party of One, and Return of Harmony had it a bit too, but all those had some quirk to them that made them different than being straight up from some drama show or something (things don't erupt in LBYS or GIYC for example). This one actually had Sweetie Belle and Rarity have a big fight which felt stronger or worse than the other confrontations we had to that point.

I was kinda weirded out at first, but watching it again it seemed fine, but I just think that it was an interesting thing to see, as it felt to me the show was dialing up the drama higher than last season, even though it ultimately felt like the same pace.

Rarity's line delivery during that "Celestia as my witness" scene is great. At first I thought it was clunky and strange, but on second viewing it seems like another time where Rarity is literally playing to some audience and hamming it up, and its fantastic. That "What have I done? :gonkity: " just kills me now. She's playing it up for an oscar I bet.

Edit: Also the "See, we ARE Apple Pie!" "What?" lines are perfect.

Pinkie's not the only one with 4th wall problems. Rarity knows the audience is watching her and so she has to play up her part on the stage.
Same thing happens in Dog and Pony Show (Headless pointed this out) - when everyone's imagining Rarity in prison, there's a split-second pause where she glances towards the camera as though she's waiting for a stage cue. I love it.

I've never interpreted that shot as a look to the audience. It's too quick a glance and is followed by another angle, which tells me she just happens to look past the audience, rather than at it.[/irrelevance]

This ep: I like it. Again, I really have nothing to add to the convo that hasn't already been said. Though, similarly to the "scribble on paper as a child" and "talk to teachers in a WHUH WHUH WHUH voice" stories, I vaguely remember doing the dragging-shoulders scoot a couple times in my youth, complete with my face to the floor. Reminds me of a frilled lizard-kind of walk.

EDIT: Oh wow, if Rarimom was a human, she'd totally be pear-shaped. Look at the size of that flank! It could feed a small army!

After Discord, Halloween, and Twilight going insane, it was nice to finally get to the calmer "slice of life" episodes. I really didn't expect much from this episode because Rarity and Sweetie Belle :bluh: but it actually set a very high water mark for future episodes. The ability to focus on specific characters without shoehorning in others really lets them tell a more fulfilling story. I actually liked both characters, but the dynamic between AB and AJ was probably my favorite part of the episode.

The only complaint I had really was that awkward apple pie metaphor to describe sisterhood.

I'll also admit that I didn't pay attention to the change in eye color during the race, so I was caught off guard that it was Rarity for most of it. It gives the whole thing a bit more impact I suppose.

Oh and "ONE DAY!".
