Brainbread's Plushies

Post by Brainbread (?) » Mon Mar 12, 2012 3:10 am

Howdy! I've been fairly prolific in making plushies, starting about a year ago! You've probably seen some of my stuff before (but I don't want to act all high and mighty. I still don't think people know who I am at all! xD)

This thread will be for posting new merch that I finish, new projects, sometimes works in progress, and answering any questions that y'all might have!

Deviantart - for finished works, a Gallery
Tumblr - for works in progress, ramblings, some drawings and finished stuff.

Some of my recent stuff. I'll update with new stuff, and keep a spot open here for any merchandise thats currently for sale.

Anyways, feel free to ask me anything you want to know about sewing, or plushies! If I get a question a lot, I'll add it to the post.

Also! I am not giving out my pattern(s), sorry! They can take a while to make, and its not effort I want to toss out lightly.

I've seen that thread before. I generally try to avoid unsolicited advice nowadays though. People seem to take it as trolling (PonyChan, again). If I see anything particular I can answer, I'll try and do so.

Anyways, some more stuff that will be available this week/the next.

I'm just waiting on voltage controllers from some Engineers I know; so that I can install their audioboards and make them talk. They'll have... well. About 2gigs of space to dozens of clips and really, anything else you want on them. They use microSD cards, so they can be modified for more clips, etc. Its quite nice. An improvement over the "10 seconds" or one clip that I've seen on everything else that talks.

Wait, so, people post in plushie threads and actually get mad when people give constructive criticism? What a pile of wankers. :-/

I don't think that would happen here. People have already been swapping tips and such in that thread; your input would be welcome. :allears:

Somehow, I'm not surprised that people would take constructive criticism as trolling, although it is pretty sad. :-/

In 4 and a 1/2 hours. Its a gift for my brother for his birthday. Its a Pony in his gaming clan's colours, with their logo as a cutie mark.

Good times. I had fun doing this (even as a bit of a speed project).

Brainbread, how are you attaching the eyes/cutie marks? Is it just printed fabric of some kind?

Have you considered embroidering those parts?

It is printed fabric (iron-on printable cotton). I've also considered embroidery, but its beyond the scope of my talents. I don't have an embroidery machine, and it adds about at least a week to the turnaround if I wanted to get it done by a shop. That, and ~$50 per set of eyes, per set of cutie marks the first time.

I could get them done by bronies online, like E, but that'd be about two weeks to ship my material, a few weeks for them to get through their log, and then more to ship back. I've attempted to try getting them as patches, but the glue that is used doesn't adhere well to microchenille.

The next choice is to get an embroidery machine myself, but they're starting (from what I've been told) around ~$500, so its not a cheap option.

The final choice is to couch yarn, like I did for the eyes on this (another doll I made)

But its very time consuming. I probably spend around 30-45 minutes on each eye, so I'd have to increase my prices in order to compensate, though I might offer that as an option.

I'm on the low-ish end for commission prices as it is, I think (it pains me to say that, because I know that still puts me out of people's budgets). I get around ~$15-20 an hour on a regular pony commission ($100 is my base price, more if its complicated or has accessories eg Rainbow Dash, Trixie, Applejack). Low-ish comparing myself to someone like Whitedove Creations, who is charging $375 a commission (incidently, bumped their prices up as soon as they finished their charity drive, which is odd).

Now to tie that back. Embroidery is expensive and time consuming. If I wanted to do embroidery, I'd have to charge significantly more to compensate. It does look much better, but its not really feasible for me, though I might offer options like couched yarn eyes and marks for extra.

Thanks! They're all done by The Naro I liked his vectors, so I had asked him if he could make some eyes, and it sorta snowballed. Lots of people go to him for that, now.

So I made these

And they're still holding together! (Its a cuttlefish and a dinosaur dressed as a shark). I found that sewing things was really enjoyable, but I didn't have a means of... well. dealing with the stuff I had finished. So I cut back and only made them as gifts. And now, being able to do it "commercially" basically means that I have no reason to /not/ sew other than lack of free time. Its great :awesomedash:

OC Commission: "Saving Grace"

I did the OC first, and then made some changes for the next two Rarity's. I sized down the eyes and ears in the second one, and changed the head to be slightly wider, with a more pronounced muzzles. Little details!

That also means I am accepting commissions. I'm currently full this week, but I'll be opening them again for more stuff on Monday evening.

This was a commission from a while ago. When I had quoted $100. She's currently set at $150 now to help compensate for the 10 or so hours it took to make her. I hope the next time it'll go more easily.

Now I have to make sure i don't lose her hair pattern >.>

The original buyer backed out prior to their cheque clearing, so it went to the runner up for their last bid. They've also bought a life-sized Pinkie Pie, a life-sized Fluttershy, and they also bought the 3ft tall Applejack plushie I made.

But yeah, the original buyer had some "unforseen" need to buy a new car, so they requested a cancel of payment, so I just contacted the runner up. Two days later it was in the mail.
