That's what I figured too. Introducing time travel as a thing that's actually possible seems like a stretch, even for this show. Though my second guess is that it'll end up working like the Time Turner chapter in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where the past is unchangeable and the most anyone can do is make what already happened happen, but it will also turn out they had just misinterpreted the events.
