My Little DVD: Boxsets Are Magic [global dvd thread]

Post by drunkill (?) » Wed Apr 04, 2012 7:30 am

This thread is for consilidating DVD related news for the show. I'll try to keep the OP updated where possible.
Currently it seems the Australian DVDs will be the first released as a complete season (depending on the timeline of the remaining 3 volumes) Whereas the US distributor, SHoutfactory is going for themed dvd releases with episodes bundled together. Germany appears to be getting season 1 in order, but in small (3 episodes) dvd releases.

Is there a possibility of a Blu-Ray release in the future? "Never say never but there is very little chance of a Blu-ray release." - Product Manager, Madman Entertainment

Please post news as you hear it.

Hahaha, the sticker on the Australian box set edition says 'Now 20% Cooler'.

I told my brother about the DVDs coming to Australia and now he's going to get them on Day 1. I'm really pleased that we're getting the complete first season in order, despite the 5 episode release schedule. Makes up for only about 14 episodes being shown on Foxtel (and they were sped up!).

Yup, they have like 80% market share for Australia & NZ. They seems to know what fans of anime and cartoons want and try to give it to them. Hasbro probably asked for multiple volumes, given thats how you sell kids shows, small bundles so parents gotta keep buying them. At least they'll be in chronological order and not just themed packs.

I've pre-ordered the Collectors box and V1 :awesomedash: Although something was up with my order, don't think it was confirmed so I may as well pick up volume 2 at the same time if I have to resubmit my order (sent an email to support to get some help on it) :pinkieshrug:

I wanted to buy the Australian set but because it is region 4, it won't work on my DVD player! :applejargh:

If we're keeping a complete list, it should probably also include Celebration at Canterlot. Expensive as heck on Amazon but I found it for $7-8 in the toy aisle when I went to buy Friendship Express. Episode listing: Ticket Master, Suited for Success.

No, the dvd does not include the actual celebration at Canterlot. :v:

I don't hold it against anyone that Australia's getting a boxed set first, because they have to wait months and months to pay for grossly overpriced video games.

Your computers DVD drive should (like, an 80% chance) be region free. You should find out somehow and check.

At least here, quite a lot of dvd players sold these days are region free.

In the US, virtually no DVD players are region-free without modification. Actually, if they haven't changed it, Windows will ask you if you want to switch regions when you pop in a DVD with a different region code, but you can only do this five times, and then it is stuck on your last choice forever. (You can reset the counter, but only four times, and then, again, forever.)

Apparently this program will display the region info.

I play all my DVD's with VLC. I go back and forth between NTSC and PAL all the time, with no prompts about switching regions.

That depends on your drive firmware. VLC can't circumvent RPC-2 drives.

Also, some standalone DVD players can be reprogrammed via hidden menus to be region-free. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks is a good place to look for how to access said menus.

Officially, it allows for movies to have staggered theatrical releases across the world without holding up DVD sales in regions where the movie's theater run is over. It can be used to create barriers to prices equalizing between markets.
