Shorts Between S8-9

Discuss, put more links as they come in, etc. Some of these apparently were leaked in China a week or two ago. I know, China has joined the extensive list of early countries, I can't wait to see who's next.

One of Applejack's dares really begs the question of how pegasi normally dig holes. Or maybe the custom for them is to just punch a hole through whatever clouds they're living in?

Kate Leth said that she wrote one of the MLP shorts. I wonder if it's for this

Speak of the devil, that's the one Kate Leth wrote. Pretty cute, never thought of Applejack having vocal range.

Ah, I'd been hoping it was Ashleigh Ball doing all those voices.

Yeah, I figured that was the entire point of the short, so I was taken aback when the credits listed multiple VAs for AJ's voices.

Honestly, I didn't like these shorts too much. I've had enough AJ/Dash rivalry for a lifetime from "Non-Compete Clause", Pinkie was just making everyone miserable, and I didn't find the voice one interesting once the gimmick I thought it had turned out not to be the case.

The shorts were cute. I would have liked to see the students in Mystery Voice do a bit more than just sitting there, at least commenting on the different PA announcements.

It looks like they dropped the Best Gift Ever branding, but putting this here anyway. Of the shorts released since the start of December, including the EQG ones, this is definitely the best. It had some fun playing around with a premise specific to ponyland, featured some cute Twilight, and had a lot of Rarity.

It was cute, but I think the whole Spike crush on Rarity and her using it for her advantage should be done. He deserves better at this point IMO.

I don't think MLP has been this outright wacky in a while, even taking Discord into consideration. It's pretty fun.
I'm surprised how good these new pony shorts are after the previous Best Gift Ever shorts were pretty weak.

I thought this was pretty good, and I liked the little twist at the end.

I'm enjoying these shorts, they're a good way to keep Pony fresh until the new season starts. :allears:

Are these shorts localized for other languages? The title cards would presumably require a non-trivial amount of work to redraw after translation, assuming Hasbro cares to do so. I'm reminded of how the show largely dropped having legible text after S1 (see the "Welcome Princess Celest" gag and how we've not had much like it since), which from the stories I've heard was because Hasbro wanted to more easily shop it around to international distributors.

The title cards definitely go well with the generally toonier tone of these shorts, I feel.

The Equestria Girls shorts all have title cards like this, and they're localized.

And just checking, the Rarity short did have a localized title card too. It seems like they're translating the Pony shorts into way fewer languages than the EQG shorts, though.

The sick Twilight one was good - while it seemed to be playing upon a joke already used back in 'Three's a Crowd', it was definitely a unique take (RD only talking in sound effects was a novel idea) and it didn't keep the joke going past the point it was no longer amusing.

I'm also interested to see if any of these shorts get utilized in Anthology 7...

Funny, I was actually reminded more of Bridle Gossip. It of course has since been established that each pony has a unique but fixed reaction to poison joke, so to do something new then something else would need to happen. Thankfully(?), it seems there is no shortage of wacky cartoon stuff in the magical land of Equestria.

It's funny that this is literally just "if Non-Compete Clause didn't require the characters to be complete idiots", since this has Rainbow and AJ do the obvious and just ask Fluttershy how she keeps winning Teacher of the Month and then trying her suggestion. Also, important canon info: Rainbow and AJ didn't win Teacher of the Month after the events of "Non-Compete Clause".

I see that Fluttershy learned well from the events of The Saddle Row Review on how to make cleaning appealing. :twiright:

On another note, I really have to wonder how common unexpected bad weather is in Equestria. It certainly isn't unheard of for the weatherponies to have to do that (we've seen the concept as early as Look Before You Sleep), but I'd expect it to either be awfully rare or the product of a dysfunctional government. Given how the show has long since stopped leaning so heavily on ponies being stewards of nature, I'd understand if the show's crew simply forgot about that aspect of Equestrian life, especially given the precedent set in S1... but still.

Well, it could’ve been the weather wasn’t really unplanned, just that Fluttershy forgot that it would be raining on the day she wanted to do her field trip. :pinkieshrug:

I watch the weather news but I'm still surprised of the weather the next day.

So at this point, the school's been around for at least 16 months, judging by how many times Fluttershy won Teacher of the Month.

Twilight always was happy to sing about ladybugs with Cadance, but having seen ladybug swarms myself, nursery rhymes are definitely far different from the real thing.

I enjoyed the new short. A starring role for Glimmy, some more student scenes, and even Twilight slipping into Lesson Zero mode a couple of times.

I thought this short was incredibly adorable, both with Twilight panicking and her "victory" at the end.

And in the fan art realm, glad people are making the Miraculous connection.
