That does look cool, but I hope the lettering is easier to see on the actual shirt. The fuzzy sample picture makes it look like it says, "BLANK HANK," and I don't know any Hank. :v:

I'll start by mentioning that I'm placing an order for Topshot's shirt today, because of all of them it's clearly the best.

As for the other winners, there's one or two I might wear, but the #1 winner is way too tacky; and that's coming from someone with no fashion sense whatsoever for what that's worth. I'm not the kind of guy to wear jerseys in the first place, but I think it's the printed-on goggles that really ruin it for me. It feels like it's trying too hard to be cool already, and the goggles were meant to literally give it an extra 20%, and it just doesn't work.

Don't worry, Topshot. If you can't be #1 in votes, I'll help you be #1 in sales.

It's a damn shame The Topshirt didn't win because the one that did win just screams "minimum effort". Makes you really think long and hard about the kind of fans that exist outside these hallowed halls. :ohrarity:

I'm not a fan of the Wonderbolts shirt either. Seems pretty tacky to me. :nngh:

Topshot should have won, but at least the design is still being made into a shirt. That's one I'd wear in public. The "dumb fabric" one is really cute but its drawback is that, outside of people who watch the show, it will make no sense to them.

There were some other designs I was hoping would win but they don't seem to be there. :fluttersmith:

What really ruins the Wonderbolts shirt for me is the goggles on the front. it seems so unnecessary and tacky, and I have like, no fashion sense at all.

Though, out of all the other runner ups, I'd wear either Topshot's shirt or that Dumb Fabric shirt. Both of them were great, though it really seemed like Topshot's should have won.

I think you definitely got the short end of the stick on the deal, since you're not going to get any residuals on it. Yeah, it's nice they're printing it, but I thought the runners up would not get the shirts printed, which makes the disparity a bit... harsh.

You guys drive me to buying custom T-shirts. You yanks get all the good stuff, international shipping is a pain :P and the show doesn't have quite the following here,
so I'm going to have to jump through a couple of hoops I think.

I'm gonna try and get this

Image

on a shirt. A completely pink shirt with the face looking at EVERYONE.

As for the We Love Fine contest, the winner is a clever design I think, it's not immediately clear what it represents and stops you to take another look.
Though the text at the back is ugly in rainbow colours and would've worked better were it simply yellow or white.

Topshot, yours is brilliantly made. I may brave the international seas to get that.

Like gangbusters. As well done as the freefall design is, subtle designs that mean little to nothing to people who aren't familiar with the show would remove the "Am I willing to have candy-colored ponies on my chest in public?" aspect of fan-gear buying.

Oh definitely, back when I was all involved in the t shirt design community, they would all be up in arms against a client expecting someone to design something for them for even under $200 or so. Also, the idea that the prize is really "me giving you exposure" is a shitty attitude in these situations (which I hope WLF is not thinking), as it doesn't really help with the perceived valuation of skills in the field as a whole. Oh well, next time I won't even bother with stakes like that I guess!

What bums me out even more is that you lost by .01. That's harsh right there. :fluttersmith:

On the flipside, if they only had the first place shirt actually produced, I would have thought the contest was actually trying to change the trend of this crowdsourcing stuff. But by picking up the runners up like that, even though it means a friend does get his shirt made, it still feels a bit off. Especially when the difference between a $50 credit and $1K in cold cash is within a hundredth of a point.

Agreed, I think all of the winners were either creative or featured nice art, but I probably won't buy any of them because I can't see myself wearing one in public. At this point I've mentioned to a pretty large number of my friends that I checked out the show and thought it was pretty good, but I'm not going to flaunt the depth of my fandom unless a large handful of them ever give the show a shot. Which, it's increasingly clear, probably will never happen. I assume a lot of people are in the same boat.

Contests are fine and all, but don't mean much when the winner's decided by public voting (was this public voting?).
You entered, made a hell of a design and got second place. You could discuss endlessly whether that was right or not, get caught up in details and lose track of what it's all about:
loving it.

Do the things you do because you love doing them first, not because you want to win, get views, get paid or whatever.

You gave it your best and this happened. And... it sucks, big time, but don't let it get you down. Take everything that you can from it and just move on.
There will be more contests, you will make more fantastic designs and more good stuff you can sink your teeth in.

Your own line of shirts? Do it!

On a related note, fun with Spreadshirt's design tool:

Well, of course the boobies are not the flaw. :iamapony: They're just an extra consideration one has to make when putting a design together. Generally, you don't want things to be hard-to-read or complex around that area to reduce awkward staring. Most of the time, well endowed females don't like things that attract attention directly at their chests and nowhere else. The overwhelming sea of complaints I've seen received about problematic designs always makes it a consideration when putting something together.

I understand, but it's a bit silly methinks. It's close to 'women should wear plain and boring shirts because heterosexual males are genetically predisposed to liking boobs', which is close to sexual discrimination.
Like how women weren't allowed at a Battlefield 3 conference thingy to avoid sexual harassment.

But I'm going on this really big sociocultural tangent while I should be thanking you for your feedback. So thanks :)

I've ordered the t-shirt, first time I've ever done something like that so I'm excited. Bit of an experiment.

We generally disapprove of cosplay, simply because it can go strange places very quickly. Exceptions are made for daughters and nieces (or little boys, if they really wanted to be Big Macintosh, I guess). I had mentioned it in the fanart / images thread, but I guess it should be mentioned here too. Maybe an exception can be made for Halloween. I don't know. :pinkieshrug:

Halloween is a different sort of thing, though. I mean, like take one of those creepy horse masks, paint it white and add some flowy pastel hair, and bam, hilarious Celestia that gets around the creepy angle by being completely unserious. But that is a fine, fine line.

e: hell, not just Celestia (though she is the most horse-like), but any of 'em. It's a great group costume, in fact. Buy creepy horse masks, paint them candy colors, and go though no further effort than that.
