I say that as if it isn't already exclusively because of MLP.
It's not H*R, but one of the creators is partially responsible for the Aquabats Super Show, also on the Hub. :spike101: Disney has also signed them up for something.

I'm complete shit at fighting games (except Smash Bros.), but still really excited for this. Luckily, going by this video, I'll at least be able to beat the AI! :v:

I'd be lying if I said they don't have their work cut out for them.

Just pointing out here that they already said in the description in the video and the article page that all of these bugs have already been fixed. This video just serves to show that there are a lot of concerns and bugs and such that can pop up in a fighting game and that they do, in fact, have a QA team who (at the very least kind of) knows what to look for in terms of actual glitches.

Anyways, one topic that I don't know if its been discussed properly is everyone's critiques about what we have seen so far. I know when talking to others about the footage and the info we have they mention that there are some problems, but I never really understand them nor are all the problems clearly explained/defined/critiqued, so I was wondering if some people here would explain to me some of the more technical design problems that are around, like apparently there is some problem with Twilight's fireball into a throw or something?

The problem/glitch is that it's one hell of a kara-throw. Like the video writes, it's a maximum-length-kara throw. A kara-throw is sort of an exploit where you use a character's move or special move where it has an animation that makes them move forward a bit, but you cancel the move really quickly into a throw. If done right, you simply move forward really quick and then throw someone, and this is advantageous because normally you have to press up against an opponent to throw them, but kara-throwing means you can throw someone from a further distance away. In the case of the Twilight bug, all you had to do was wait for the opponent to block a fireball and then you can instantly throw them...no matter where you're standing on the screen. Not very fair at all.

And for the record, a kara-throw isn't exactly illegal or an outstanding bug in most games they're found in, but they're by and large not intended to happen by the designers. Most times they're extremely hard to pull off because they usually happen from cancelling a normal move, which is fast and has a very small window for execution. That doesn't mean people can't master them, however.

Man this game is all over the place in terms of music. Individually the pieces are great, but I'm not sure if they're thematically cohesive. Time will tell.

I really dig the kind of jazzy acoustic part in the middle, but I have to wonder how well it'll actually work as a fighting game theme.

I'm definitely not into this track, mainly because I don't like happy hardcore. It sounds like it belongs in a flash minigame instead of a fighter. If they stick with this, I'll have to remember to pick stages manually because this song would annoy me way too much.

I understand that happy hardcore "fits" Pinkie Pie as a theme, but this song sounds like you're playing Mario and you're running out of time instead of an energetic ambience to keep you pumped for fighting.

The only track I didn't really think fit well in a fighting game is Rarity's theme. It's a great stand alone. :pinkieshrug:

Applejack's fits the best, followed by Twilight. Rainbow Dashs' theme so far is really good.

I hate to knock this other composer for the game, but RainbowCrash88's themes just fit the idea of a pony fighting game better, in my opinion. Not to mention they're catchy and memorable. I even find myself humming them. I suppose I'll get used to the other tracks in the game, but like Willsun said, I may end up choosing certain stages because of the music.

So does this mean they'll be splitting the mane 6 themes evenly between the two of them? We already know RainbowCrash88 is making Dash's, so it seems WhiteTail might be doing Fluttershy.

I tend to agree. The theme is great on its own though, I think.

I'm a bit at a loss here, what are the issues? I say this more from a "I don't think I can tell due to my own ignorance" point of view than doubting there's a problem with the song (it does sound, well, noisy at times).

Mostly that it's compressed to hell and it shows especially when the song gets louder. Part of the entire point of mixing is so this kind of thing doesn't happen.

I think nums is complaining about 1:11 where the percussion got ruin. It goes away at around 1:35. If it isn't that, nums should get a better headset. Those dollar store pair can't pick up all the sounds. :v:

I don't really get what determines a fighting theme as more fitting than others other than usual preference. As far as I'm familiar with, the onyl fighting game soundtrack I've heard that has an overall theme are the Guilty Gear Rock stuff, and I guess Soul Calibur with it's attempt at epic sounds I guess or whatever? I mean, the only fighting game soundtracks I ever listened to/enjoyed so far were Street Fighter and the MvC/other Versus games soundtracks, but those are usually the same style as this with different styles to highlight the differences between characters. And if anything, I'd say variety goes a long way for a bunch of games, and I'd put fighting games to in the category of "could use more music variety".

Willsun wrote:
but this song sounds like you're playing Mario

It's not like Mario didn't have its own share of variety either, even if you consider speeding it up.

But either way, I just don't really get at all how this song doesn't give you energy and pump you up. At all. Like, people like Guilty Gear Music like this and think it pumps them up? I don't see how it's of any ambience at all, since rock as always struck me as a type of sound that "gets in your face" so to speak. Not to mention, I don't think what constitutes "good fighting music" is something you can even say definitive, as what pumps people up can be several different things and will vary. If you don't like Happy Hardcore and doesn't get you excited, sure that's fine, but I don't think we can really say that it doesn't work as a fighting game song.

Weeks wrote:(it does sound, well, noisy at times)

It's probably that. The degree which it bothers people, to a certain extent, I believe, is usually personal. I know I'm used to it so I don't have any complaints in general. The only mixing problems I'd disagree with is pretty much the whole jazzy section, which I would have fiddled around differently if it were me.

Casting call until May 19th + "every 3 months or so" = Rainbow Dash casting call at end of August or early September. Then about 3 months to fine-tune that so earliest game release December 2012.

What scarce few Fluttershy auditions up on Youtube so far aren't so hot. Talking quietly as Fluttershy seems to be pretty easy, but they seem to lose consistency when they do her shouting/angry lines.

They've closed audition submissions for Fluttershy and didn't give a time when they expect to announce their pick. Shouldn't take terribly long in any case. No mention of the little girl who auditioned since their news is all cordial.

I just really hope they pick someone who can sound right with the angry Fluttershy yelling parts. I feel like any girl without a super high or low voice can pull off the normal voice easily.

This is pretty old, but I just noticed that the video was made from footage that had to have been from before the second livestream, possibly the bronycon build or earlier. :facehoof: So if there were any doubts before about those bugs being old and squashed, I've no doubt that they fixed those specific cases by the stream.

Funnily enough, there has been a slight (unintentional probably, but it's there all the same) pattern for the VA selections here. So far, it would be that 2 ponies would be done relatively close to each other with some sort of break afterwards (aside from Mayor Mare, but that was a relatively quick call as well); Twilight -> Applejack were very close, lasting through that month. Pinkie pie -> Rarity were kind of close as well, though there's a bigger gap there that is most likely attributed to a Bronycon Build/the holiday season. If patterns are anything, then this would mean that sometime mid June they would start up the Rainbow Dash audition. Still Though, it's hard to imagine that the Fluttershy audition took an entire month. :modesty:

In terms of character reveals, if we take the first releases as AJ and Twilight as rough, then they kind of have a pattern as well. Mane 6 started development around late may, but let's just say they had the summer before the first livestream where 2 characters were shown off in rough form. Then it isn't until the end of that semester into the winter where the next 2 characters get shown off in rough form (technically Pinkie Pie and AJ were in trailers before streams). Given that another semester has passed, we can assume that there must be some rough form of either Rainbow Dash of Fluttershy, though I'd hesitate to say both are in rough form because they did say there will be some sort of flying/air mechanic for pegasi that might go through different revisions for characters much like Rarity getting a different projectile mechanic. I'd say it's a prime time for another stream. :ponydrugs:

I think the interesting bit about their lack of updates is how they haven't been doing trailers since Twilight's in November, which was a little over a month after the first stream when characters still had a bunch of work ahead of them. I'd think they'd release at least one trailer after their last stream in february since they must have gotten work done on Pinkie Pie/Rarity since then. They really need to put in more updates regardless, no matter how small. I don't mind updates like this or this that just give a tiny glimpse at the animation versus something more detailed like showing off game mechanics.
