i hope i didn't come across as a jerk earlier. A hundred teams must have quit before they got a tenth as far as you.

From what I know about fighting game dev, people saying "I want spike!" is kind of like saying "I want a bunch of new units in Starcraft", except they all need to be balanced and work seamlessly across what's already there and not provide any unfair advantages. Even in commercial games characters are declared "Broken" and unusable for tournaments.
I'm at the last Bronycon and I overhear some kid talking about how he's all psyched for Zecora and the Wonderbolts.

Interested, yes. Able?, probably not for a bit :c - We're facing a few weeks of intense work backstage. Right now I'm kind of sneaking off to be here ;)

Afraid not; We don't have much control there, and as far as we know, Indie games don't get a dedicated stream, but get shown between the big events, so you might catch a bit from there. We decided to make the PON-E3 stream to show the same build that's getting shown at EVO for those not able to attend.

Eeyup. Pretty much. Every change we introduce in a character's moveset ripples across to the rest. Suddenly one thing needs a nerf, or another a buff, but buffing or nerfing stuff all willy-nilly makes characters too OP or too weak... Multiply that with how many moves a completely new character got and how they have to be balanced against every other character in the game's moves, and yet still feel adequate and fitting in themselves and as a combo-able whole...

Sorry if it seems we're taking a lot more time than necessary and being too picky with our choices. The first is due to the extra care we're giving to balance and smoothness, graphically and technically, (since we have to satisfy our own "high" expectations of our work too), and the second is due to the fact that, much as we love working on this project, we have a limit to how much time and resources we can invest into it without starving first. Apparently, devs need to eat too. Who knew, huh?

Aww, thanks. :flattered: I didn't know if the things I wrote up were silly or not but I'll assume I helped contribute to a positive opinion on this thread.

Anu Aikan wrote:Bit of confusion here. I actually vectored my own version of the font (which I later found was based on Yukarimobile, have no problem admitting that); I never got to use Yukarimobile's font file (Would have liked to know. It'd have saved quite a bit of time). The one we use is slightly different to Yukarimobile (Slightly different width/height proportions, different design for a few characters, etc.), but for general fan art purposes (We're still surprised we get a bit of fanart), I'd recommend using Yukarimobile.

I know nothing of vectors, but I'm imagining the process for making the current font you guys use now must have been looking at a limited sample of the (unknown at the time) Yukarimobile font and manually recreating it with interpretations on the missing parts? That would be a tedious process I imagine, but what makes the situation funny to me is how it seems similar to the Celestia Medium/Generation B font problem from last year. I think considering the circumstances around what must have gone into the font, perhaps a future site update detailing the font story or maybe a glimpse into the process of making the fonts might be in order. :crack:

Anu Aikan wrote:Confirmed. It's RC's take on RD theme. An early version, though. It's changed by now. RC showed it as part of his interview for "The Brony Show".

This actually kind of relates to one question I always wanted to ask, namely that would there be changes to the music as development continued. I'm going to assume though that the RD theme was WIP at that interview, since I imagine revisions to the songs might end up confusing the audience, especially when they don't really need any revisions at this point I imagine.

I'm sure by now it must be an amusing joke to them and they acknowledge that they have taken a long time. I know that speaking to other fan game projects, other pony fan game developers knew how to respectfully joke around about Mane 6 development time.

There is also what was said in the second livestream and probably in the FAQ, where balance issues change over time as people learn to properly use movesets to their full extent. I remember hearing stories about how quickly gamers/testers are in complaining about imbalance or lag when they simply are using a scapegoat when performing poorly (I do this IRL in other games too), showing that the players aren't necessarily 100% clairvoyant fair judges.

I think, if anything, the nature of fighting game fans and such calls for such attention to detail and extended testing. A lot of Gamers are naturally impressionable, which can backfire if you fail to wow them at first and grab their attention since they can quickly lose interest (I remember jokes in the second livestream like "Try to stay relevant!" and such). I'm no fighting game player, but looking at what fighting game enthusiasts look for in their games it seems like they really dig deep into every angle and detail when it comes to attacks/mechanics/balance, and to me it always seems like there is never 100% satisfaction for anyone. I imagine that all this combined with the fact that you guys are under the label of "small indy dev team", it means that there is a lot of pressure and standard to live up to from big fighting game fans. I know that those probably aren't the only target audience to consider here, but I can only picture a daunting task for you guys.

----------------------------------------------------

Like I said I would do before, I wanted to bring some stuff up from the latest Bite-Sized Update.

Image
To start off, there was the updated Rarity Standing Heavy (didn't know it was a heavy! good to know) which was posted twice. I can only spot 2 differences right now from the original, namely that the cloth seems a different color and that the gif posted doesn't have the magic glow that we could see from earlier gifs. The big thing that surprised me was, when seeing this animation in slow motion, is that Rarity does a little twirl before launching the attack (which might explain why the speed of the gif seems slowed down, to properly show it off). I think this makes sense logically, but its just something that I could never tell from the livestream or videos, especially in this part of the QA test video, it always seemed to play by too fast that you can really only barely notice something a little off in her animation.

Also apparently they used a splattered paint background for posting the gif instead of using the hexagon motif. Its kind of similar to the main art style update from before, but that update still had hexagons in all of the art so :iiam:

Next up is the character sketches for Rarity they showed off. I like all of them, but I just wanted to point out some special things below.

Image

From Top to Bottom, left to right:
1. Rarity's walking back animation, what interests me here is her expression looks very annoyed in the concept. It looks very cute here, but from what I can see in the actual animation from the streams as I try (emphasis on try, it's pretty hard to work with low quality stream footage from youtube :unenthused: ) to point out below. It's mostly the angle at which her head dips and her mouth that seem to change her expression from the annoyed look (that seemed inspired from that moment from Green isn't your color) to something that looks like a smug look as she backs up. Not that I particularly want either, but its interesting to me to see where the concept sketches change in animation, similarly like all the show storyboards.
Image

2. Blocked Chip Damage KO. This was confirmed I believe in the second livestream, and I think I asked Willsun this point earlier, but apparently this is a rare thing to put in the game in general for fighting games. I really enjoyed the concept of Rarity getting tangled up in her fabric, so I'm really excited to see what it is like in-game if they really put the idea in.

3. Weak Hit KO. Something that, as far as I believe, they have not said would be in the game or not, so either it is something they decided against or it may be a secret thing? Either way, its a neat idea like the Chip damage KO and it's cool to see a glimpse of it here.

4. Rarity's Air Heavy. Something that I think hasn't showed off in the footage yet, so its neat to see it here. I think its really amusing how she just uses the.....thing? I recognize it as a tube that you wrap cloth around but I dunno its name. Anyways its amusing to me to see her directness in using it to smash an enemy when compared to the slap fight of her Air Light. It makes me wonder though, since we haven't seen that particular concept in the footage so far, if it has been implemented yet or if the idea for her Air Heavy changed? She does have that one aerial where she brings her umbrella (?) overhead, so maybe that's the new version.

5. The gem finder concept and the hip bump. Apparently the gem finder concept was something that might have been altered with since bronycon, so we get to see a little of that animation here. I also wonder about that hip bump (looks to be from Sonic Rainboom), it seems unlabeled, so I wonder if its just a free drawing for a potential attack lying around or if it was to be part of the gem finder ability from above?

The last part of the update was the background art. We see sketches from the concept and the photoshop mock ups of the planning stage as well as the current mock up. A lot of the layout seems similar, but there are a lot of minute differences, such as the ceiling colors, the locations and sizes of the stairs and curtains on the left, as well as what seems to look like a different angle of the center piece. Additionally, it seems like Hoity Toity and a model pony were planned to be in the background, so it'll be interesting to see just how this stage gets updated if what he have seen wasn't the final layout of the stage.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I also wanted to point out was that the latest weekly update image here, while clearly a joke, featured Pinkie like I predicted! Either I was crazy obsessive over a easily seen pattern, or the developers choose pinkie at random or purposely saw my post and chose pinkie pie to mess with my head like a carrot on a string. :tinfoil: I'm not crazy, honest!

Also apaprently Willsun updated the OP? Didn't know you did that but I guess someone should mention it :pinkieshrug: Nice work either way.

Rarity using cloth to fight is like the greatest unintentional call back to old school Wu Xia/Kung Fu Chinese films ever. She'll be like one of those elegant ladies flying around in long flowing dresses that cuts peoples heads off with their....sleeves. :twonk:

It involved a lot of sketching and character planning trying to stay as close as possible to the style. From what I see comparing results, I was pretty close =P. Pencil Sketches then got scanned and redrawn/modified in Photoshop (Which I like working with far more than illustrator)... From there, the next logical step would've been export/import the vectors to a font making program. I skipped that step and actually use, align and modify the Photoshop character vectors individually into words and sentences. You'll get to see more of the "font" in game in our next stream... Might probably show the process proper in a future BSU.

fenster wrote:These tweetsmake me very curious as to what is going on behind the scenes.

Find out in our next stream. I'll say this, though. Trying Japanese without consulting the Japanese expert on the team and double checking stuff leads to stuff that might've been avoided if you had. Next time, Try Russian instead.

Stuff you see in streams, video previews, and especially BSUs are subject to change, and most likely WIP. Song video releases posted in the site and RC/DH's youtube accts are usually "V 1.0" and are more set in stone, with any changes being small details, which won't change radically without a good reason.

Rarity's Air heavy -did- change from concept to ingame (Feel/balance factors). You can see her cloth bolt in one other move, though.

General comment: Flavour stuff gets worked on the last. Win/lose poses, background details and other "flair" stuff included.
Also: Glows get imported separately from the character sprites, then aligned in engine. That's why you can't see a glow in the .gif above - It was originally an internal image file to show the movement. The .GIF frame rate is also different from that the move got ingame.

I'm getting serious Rose vibes from what's been shown off. That standing H looks eerily like Rose's standing fierce in sf4. Maybe she'll have Soul Satellite :gotcha:. So, if I wanna prepare for the tournament at Canterlot Gardens, what fighting games should I be practicing? I'm guessing BlazBlue because it seems to be the closest to FiM. Of course, that means playing BlazBlue :bluh:. Maybe I'll just play a bunch of JoJo's because JoJo's is a good 4 button fighting game.

Silk SK wrote:So, will there be chip and weak hit KOs in the game or were those just concept?

I'd imagine that chip KO is in this game considering JoJo's is the only one I can think of that doesn't have chip death.

Guess it was just the people playing while I was watching. Pinkie beat AJ every time, and both of them lost to Rarity/Twilight every time. AJ especially seemed like she had nothing to do but try to whittle away at people's blocks and hope they accidentally walked into one of her grabs.

So players get three matches, and then they have to get off and get two new players?

I can kinda see how maybe Earth ponies are maybe easier for newer players to use, especially ones that might not be familiar with MLP.

Apparently the Party Cannon can become broken during a round if fired too often:

So far we've see the Party Cannon fire a flower pot, present box, pear, cupcake, and Gummy:

Having the names in Japanese during character selection is a nice touch. :smirk:

So Anu, I have to know. Does AJ say "Are Ya'll Okay?" when she does a Buster Hoof? :gotcha:

I'm seeing the Japanese being met with a lot of derision from people. Not sure why so many people are so hostile toward it.

None of the new stuff was verbally said, but here's all the stuff I could glean from the stream since it's been going on for about 3 hours now:

  • Character select screen updated with a new look.
  • Character portraits "react" while fighting, with only a normal and a "hurt" face so far.
  • Cloudsdale stage revealed! Very beautiful with the slowly moving houses that hover.
  • Rarity has most of her voice work added in with gameplay now.
  • Rarity's vertical shooting gem is Spike's fire ruby.
  • Rarity's level 3 super is a grab that, if successful, takes the opponent behind a dressing screen, and then reveals Rarity cinching on a corset/saddle onto her opponent tightly like she did to Twilight Sparkle during the first episode.
  • Pinkie can fire her Party Cannon as a special move. It becomes broken if fired too many times a round.
  • Pinkie's Party Cannon fires the following: flower pot, present box, pear, cupcake, and Gummy. These items may stay on the stage. The cupcake and pear seem to be consumable, while Gummy seems to have no effect other than being a visual distraction as he waddles off the stage. The flower pot seems to bounce once whether it hits or is blocked.
  • Pinkie's level 3 super turns her into her crazy/depression "Pinkamena" self. Her only attack in this mode seems to be a grab, in which she hugs her opponent very tightly before returning to normal. There seems to be no time limit in which Pinkie must hug her opponent in this mode, and seemingly can't return to normal until she does so.
  • Spin animation has been added to all the playable characters so far, with both horizontal and vertical spinning depending on how they are hit.
  • Super moves now turn the background all black (or white sometimes) when they are launched.
Things not shown:

  • Pinkie's stage.
  • Fluttershy's stage.
  • Playable versions of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash.
  • Applejack's level 3 super.

Yeah, speaking of which, how come no one has been able to pull it off? Is the move even more incomplete than Rarity and Pinkie's, or are the players streaming just not able to pull it off? Also, if a character can only hold 3 bars, and doing Buster Hoof is a level 3 done right after a level 1, wouldn't you need 4 super bars to do it (therefore making it impossible)?

I believe a mod in the chat said the move wasn't implemented yet.

At some point just a bit ago I came back and I saw a bunch of people in the stream chat talking about how Aj had hit with her super twice in a row, and then a couple people said that was her level three. So maybe someone did do it, but it was very recently and I missed it. :unenthused: Or maybe someone just did a weird combo.
Also I'd guess that the second hit only actually uses up 2, so both of them together count as her Lv. 3? :pinkieshrug:

Oh damn! I just noticed on that movelist, there are both 2 button and 1 button supers depending on the character. I've never seen a game that does that.

-AJ actually has a followup hit to her Lv1 super that uses an extra meter, according to the movelist. This is in place of a Lv3 super.
-Gummy trips opponents and does slight damage as he wanders offscreen.
-Some of the super moves are stupid crazy. I think AJ's Bionic Farm is something like QCF>HCF>attack. :bluh:
-Yes, there seems to be a manual and movelist of sorts already in process.
-Supposedly Lauren Faust came to visit the stream, but nobody believed it.
-Pinkie gets six uses from her cannon (magic gauge) per round, and it seems that the magic gauge recharges slightly on each successful hit from it. If true, I assume that landing all six shots rewards player with an extra shot.
-Rarity's magic gauge refills quickly, but doesn't increase when she's on the offense, up to a second after her last attack.

I find it interesting that AJ and Pinkie are brawlers compared to Twi and Rarity's keepaway game, and that Pinkie and Rarity start each match with full magic meter, allowing stronger early-game offense compared to Twi and AJ (who both must build the meter from scratch). Very much a mix-and-match group of characters so far, so it'll be interesting to see how Dash and Fluts mingle amongst the four built characters.

That makes more sense.

That doesn't really seem very difficult to me.

Uh, really? She seemed to show up, but then people asked if she could make a tweet to prove it since someone could easily fake her name and she just kinda didn't say anything after that.

The game looks incredible!

I'm a huge fan of Pinkie Pie and I'll probably end up using her the most. (Sorry Rarity! :flattered: )

Is there going to be any online support? ie so we can play each other over the internet? (sorry if this has been covered already)
