I might be in Canada around that time... Vancouver, Canada, but still at your side of the pond.

Vancouver -> NYC is only about 3,500 miles. You can do that in a day, day-and-a-half tops.

I'm starting to consider going to the next BroNYCon after seeing how this one turned out. I do have a place to stay in the area, but it's about 2 hours out...

funfact: St. John's, Newfoundland is about 800 miles closer to London than it is to Vancouver.

I've done art tables at cons in the past and this time I'd probably only do it if I could actually make some money at it. There's a few factors involved.

1. I'd need to have someone to tag-team with me at the table. Just to keep watch at times so I'm not stuck at the table during the whole thing.

2. Costs to attend. I have no idea what the cost for table space is, but if I stay the weekend in Manhattan it's about $40 for a tank of gas from Boston and about $250 for two nights in a hotel in Long Island that I like to stay at, plus $40 for train fare. Then there's food cost, which isn't cheap in Manhattan (but free breakfast at the hotel helps). So let's put it at $400 for costs. Obviously these can be reduced with crashing with somebody (e.g. if another bostonian wants to carpool with me).

3. Costs to make the merch. I am lucky in that i have access to a wide format with which to make very large prints. I'd have no idea how many of these things to make. I'd hate to be stuck with a bunch of stuff. I'm also not sure as to what quantity to do either. Not to mention pricing. I saw a lot of IMO cheap stuff go for crazy prices and decent stuff go for poor prices, but that was in the auction. I have no idea who's selling what for what price at the art tables.

Would a 12x18 for $25 and a 18x24 for $50 be too much, or too cheap? And 24x36 for $75? Iunno. :pinkieshrug: Keep in mind that I can buy a 24 inch roll of glossy Epson paper for $80 on B&H. That's about 33 24x36s per roll.

If I could make enough of a wad of cash to go to B&H and buy a lens for my camera, i'd be pretty happy.

Seriously. She was also the only one who actually sounded right when she slipped into her characters. The others sounded like they'd sort of forgotten what theirs sounded like. Maybe understandable if they spend a lot of time doing voices for other shows, but you'd think professional voice actors flying out to talk to fans would have a good reason to spend part of the trip warming up for that.

But it doesn't surprise me that Ashleigh would be the one to have her shit together. After her excitement at meeting a fan at one of her concerts, she's clearly the most enthusiastic about the fan response out of anyone in the cast.

I was actually the most weirdly impressed by Nicole Oliver. The other two were offscreen TV voiceover veterans and had a kind of aw-shucks-you-guys air about them, but Nicole was a theatre type and seemed to know exactly how to handle the crowd and bend it to her will.

Beyond the aforementioned moments where she deployed little shame bombs on the crowd to make sure the kids got the full benefit of the experience, there was that poor sad guy whose "question" was to go up to the panel table and hand Nicole his little framed drawing of Celestia. It could have rivaled the Let's Sing for Daniel Ingram Chorus as the most awkward moment of the entire con, but Nicole knew exactly what to do: she stood up, came around the table and gave the kid a warm motherly hug. Crowd went wild. (Dude then proceeded to cling on just a little bit too weirdly, but hey.)

It always sets me back on my heels a bit when I'm reminded that pretty much every VA in the show (even the CMC ones) auditioned for every main-cast role; there was a decent chance Michelle Creber could have ended up playing Fluttershy, for example. The lineup could have wound up all kinds of different ways. But slating Nicole as Celestia must have been the biggest "duh" of the casting director's whole week.

So Celestia's VA is a super-experienced, motherly actress who the other VAs look up to as a mentor, Scootaloo's VA seems to idolize Rainbow Dash's VA in a "I wanna be just like you" way, and Applejack's VA overworked herself to the point of (vocal) exhaustion.

What do y'all think the next ridiculous Pony/VA parallel will be? Maybe Tabitha St. Germaine will be an avid knitter and make stylish toques for all her VA pals :allears:
(but they'll be all "Who wears toques? We live in Vancouver, it doesn't snow here" and she'll be distraught and I'm just going to stop here)

Aw, what? I thought they were all great. Andrea Libman demonstrated switching between Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie flawlessly too. I really get the feeling that they all genuinely love the fanbase the show has built up.

Andrea Libman also seemed a bit more reserved and was a bit quieter than the other two. How appropro. :allears:

Minor "fucking fandom" moment: While the Q&A generally went well, I didn't care for the guy who asked "What do you think of people who make fun of bronies?!!"

:facehoof:

The answer they have to give is so obvious it's barely worth asking and it really seemed about one step removed from Milhouse's "my mom thinks I'm cool". Oddly enough Nicole Oliver gave the "you're just expressing yourself" answer, it's honestly like Celestia giving bronies a pep talk and it was awkward as hell

While I was waiting in line in the aisle to ask my question, this guy in line behind me kept plucking at my shoulder and asking me to coach him on how to ask his question, which was to be something like "What was it like doing an out-of-character voice like Fluttershy going crazy in the Gala episode?" Poor guy, he was clearly nervous as hell and had some kind of fairly severe thing about him that made it all but impossible for him to not sound really awkward and, well, special-needs; but he was really earnest in telling me repeatedly that he "didn't want to look like a fool".

I advised him to think about what kind of answer he expected them to give. That kind of made him think for a bit, and he was clearly spinning his mind in circles trying to reformulate his approach; I gave him a couple of pointers on how I'd frame the question if it were me, and he really took it seriously. I'm still just as glad they didn't get to my question or his, but I like to think there's valuable things everybody can learn on the fly about how to interact in a contact-with-the-show-talent kind of situation like this, and people who are open to it can really come to a better understanding of how to make a good impression on your heroes and glean useful information from them. I'm hoping the learning curve keeps ramping up as quickly as it has been, because this fandom is changing hella-fast, and before we know it we're going to be out of opportunities to see the big-name personalities first-hand (we're already past the phase in the fandom life cycle when the guests of honor are so casually presented that you can just go up and ask them questions all day). All this is just a prelude to Faust in June, and we'd better not screw up that opportunity, because there will literally never be a better one.

It's true, Andrea Libman did seem a little more shy than the others. :allears:

And yeah, that "what do you think of people who make fun of bronies?" question didn't really need to be asked. Obviously the VAs weren't going to say "well, they're on to something there, my little ponies". And Alex S. asked a silly question too. No offense to the guy, he's very talented and makes good pony music, but asking if there's a chance they could collaborate and do something together is just not going to happen. Like the Bronyville guys said "I think there are some contract issues there" and besides, why are you asking that to the voice actors?

Oh yeah, the Bronyville and Everfree guys were really great. They asked good, well thought out questions.

Complain about the dubs in your awful, gibberish* language maybe. The Italian and French (not Quebec) dubs sound awesome!

*The Netherlands isn't so bad, it is Holland that is awful sounding. We have a doctor from Holland and Flemesh is just the worst.

Which holland? There's North and South holland, you know! :iamapony:

Though, yeah, the dutch dub is kinda...meh. Though, the one thing that bugs me is the missed opportunity with Applejack. She talks like a Belgian person, even though we dutch people do have an actual "farmer hick"-ish dialect up in the north that could be adapted into an accent. (No offense to people who actually speak frisian, though. ;) )

I'd like to know when we get a proper dub into actual English?

And would AJ be Somerset (apples) or Yorkshire?

I wonder if we'll get any VA's with Faust for the next BroNYcon. Though I imagine Tara Strong and Tabitha St. Germain might be more difficult to get, and they may just want to keep it the "Faust" show.

However, if not VA's, I'd really like it if we could get some of the show's writers :awesomedash:
