I think he's great and his music really works with the show. Animation is almost always wall-to-wall music, which is a LOT of work. I rarely work in animation, but I did do the music for a 5-minute animated short once, and there were 18 cues in it. :starity:

I'm unable to check those particular links right now but I'll confirm that there has indeed been recycled music. And I don't mean just themes: I'm pretty sure the exact same tracks are re-used. I don't know if this was the case in season 1 but I've been noticing it a few times this season. Anyone else?

No, the first link is to the "brothers battle" music from Super Mario Bros. 3. I always thought that song might have inspired the Fever theme from Dr. Mario.

Both of those tracks sound the same because they're both the extremely common 12-bar blues format of the I, IV, and V chords, and they happen to have similar tempos. There are thousands of songs with that progression that sound like the same thing.

The links were comparing a show-song with a non-show song, but yes you are right in that the show reuses its background music a lot, and is especially noticeable for things like Rainbow Dash's theme in early episodes, certain reused musical cues to set-up scenes, etc.

I'm rewatching some old episodes, and in Griffin the Brush-Off, when Gilda's running for something to drink after eating a spicy lemon drop, it's the same music (shorter arrangement) as when Twilight drops the cupcake box at the picnic and Rainbow Dash looks up at her in Lesson Zero.

This seems worthy of a bump, William Anderson is embracing his inner brony I guess.

http://www.andersonscores.com/

Also on his "Random Notes" page he felt compelled to include this:
1/9/12
Mr. Anderson, My name is C__ M___, and I'm a music major at Case Western Reserve University. I just wanted to let you know how inspirational your compositions are to me. I hope to someday be a sound designer and composer myself, and hearing just how good your music is in all the different projects you are apart of really inspires me. The background music you did in a recent episode of My Little Pony literally gave me chills, and no other music in animation has done so. The music was backing up a story an older pony was telling a classroom of others. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu5jqJ5IKNA) The trumpet and french horn call at the very end is simply amazing. I just wanted to let you know that there are many musicians who love how much effort you put in to every project. Thank you for all the inspiration you give me,

He must've felt legitimately touched by it. :3:

(despite my general agreement with C.M. and my posting of that same clip this is not me)

And yet he doesn't have any pony music samples on his animation page or have ponies listed on his credits page :rainbert:

He really knocks the pioneer theme out of the park in that handful of minutes with two or three variations and we'll probably never hear it again.

This is the world of the pros, and it's terrifying at times.

...Oh, the U.S. version of the 2003 series. For a minute I was pondering how old Anderson must be to have come up with "There you go, Astroboy!"

EDIT: Okay, I was beginning to think the Pinkie Pie theme was just a kooky little coincidence, but now I really think there's something going on here.

First, listen to the music playing behind Rarity as she speaks at 17:58 in "Putting Your Hoof Down".

Then listen to the music playing behind her at 19:43 in "Dragon Quest".

Then listen to the first 7 notes she sings in this.

(Or listen to all the background music in Scootaloos Outdoor Play Party after the first thirty seconds, if you want.)

I think this thread deserves a bump for the amazing lovenuke theme from the finale.

This is so good.
I love the BGM in this show to death. I would buy a clean, Hasbro-released album of it on the spot.

Queen Chrysalis's Entrance scene is one of my favorite in the series so far. The Love-Nuke was incredible as well.
