Pretty much the only people I'm having fun watching are Tyrion (I think? the little person) and Stark's younger daughter, and maybe sorta Snow and the queen's evil twin brother. Also the grimdark stuff isn't really hitting home for me. Hard to explain, but it feels like it's more about being "mature" than really trying to get to the audience... even if they dragged out that arranged marriage.
It's still a fantasy series, even if stuff like magic and fantastical creatures are very low key. It's not supposed to be completely realistic look at what medieval life was like.
As far as rooting goes, no one really. There aren't really any good or bad guys, just varying degrees of assholes. Some of the characters are a bit more honorable than others, but that doesn't mean they are particularly "good" characters.
Oh and try to stay away from spoilers. There are lots of twists in the storyline, best to stay unspoiled.
