Edit : Oh wait! I forgot about blessings! Okay, so you Bless Skids, and now he succeeds on everything but a 1, but gets 2 dice for every 1, which means he ought to be able to one shot this guy in a 4 player game. And I'm sure there are a few spells/unique items which can help out.

It's been a while, but don't you succeed on 5 and 6, not 3-6? It goes up to 4-6 if you get Blessed.

Yes, but the Grapple skill gives every die +1 to the result, making 4s into 5s, 5s into 6s, etc.

The concept of The Treader of the Dust awakening only to have a guy named "Skids" whip out the Shun Goku Satsu on his mummified ass is pure gold.

Hastur is pretty easy to beat as long as the terror level isn't too high.

Yig?

Yig is the one Ancient One that's actually intended for you to go Mano e Mano with.

I thought about Call Ancient One, and that would certainly help, but it's not nearly as badass as Skids O'Toole, the Master Ninja.

shub-niggurath is pretty pathetic if you have a bunch of monster trophies accumulated honestly! probably easier than yig and ithaqua.

I don't know - anyone can fairly easily get themselves to the hospital or asylum to max out Sanity/Stam before Yig wakes up, but plenty of characters make poor monster hunters for anything deadlier than a cultist. The upside to Shub is that your best combat characters are most likely to live longest, but usually combat characters have a high natural sneak/speed anyways, so they are going to be good for a long while. Especially if they have clue tokens to burn!

That's true. Its just that yig and ithaqua both have really annoying and potentially crippling start-of-battle abilities, whereas ALL shub can do is take your monster trophies.

I really can't express how much I hate that blanket curse.

Y'Golonac and Nyarlathotep are also pushovers for a reasonably well-stocked party. In the game with Y'golonac, we completely swept the game in about an hour and a half, so we decided to fight him anyway (the guy playing Harvey Walters went into the fight with 15 clue tokens  ), and proceeded to pretty handily beat him silly.

I remember when I was playing a two player game and Hastur came out. Then we proceeded to beat the shit out him within a few rounds without ever being affected by his attack.

Speaking of low player games, has anyone done those and how do you feel about them? I feel like with too few people it's way to hard to win by sealing gates and you can't really deal with all the shit that happens. I was thinking next time I do a game like that, I'd houserule that you draw a Mythos card every other turn instead of every turn.

I've never played with less than 4 players, so I don't know if that would work well. :pinkieshrug:

Apparently what some people do when they have 2 players is have each player take control of 2 characters. Drawing a Mythos card every other turn with 2 characters still doesn't let you split your efforts very much.

I tried playing by myself to learn the game when I first got it, and it was terrible. I don't remember if I was doing it right, but I eventually gave up so I could go play with more people.

I'm a Lovecraft fan myself (you can tell by my internet name :v: ). However, me and my friends got ourselves this board game and even though the concept is pretty sweet we found it too easy. We only lost the first time we played because we were fairly clueless about game strategies and shit and even then we still made it to the Ancient One fight and almost killed him.
On our later attempts we pretty much aced the game making Ancient Ones look like chumps.

So we kind of stopped playing because it wasn't fun anymore - too easy. But man, seeing that expansion Ancient One Dex posted is kinda frightening :wat: . Maybe our little group shouldn't have stopped playing, instead we should have kept buying expansions until the difficulty level increased enough.

A friend and I did that after our 2 player game went horribly horribly wrong. We got hit with the ritual card that causes two mythos cards to be drawn each turn and failed to prevent it. Then we got the one that prevents gates from being sealed.

Still though I'd like to see if it's possible to do something with just two people even if you have to houserule it. Maybe every 3 turns? I'd experiment but I moved recently and don't really have anyone to play it with.

Yeah same here. It's just kinda boring to do it by yourself.

The base game is pretty doable with 2 people; at least, myself and a sibling did it numerous times, and then decided to do a succession game of sorts, where our duo took on every base game Ancient one - which got pretty silly pretty fast given how we started powering up, to the point we finished by taking on 3 of them simultaneously and winning.

That said, yea, expansions up the difficulty dramatically - like if you play with Innsmouth & Gate bursts, then you suddenly not only have to seal gates, you need the feds raiding Innsmouth to keep the Deep Ones from awakening the Ancient One, you have sealed gates popping open to spew monsters, and you have far crazier ancient ones, and then there's heralds, Innsmouth look tokens, crazier monsters...

Basically, its entirely doable to jack the difficulty way up; expansions add a ton of ability to tweak how hard/easy things get.

Just play a game against Yig. Yig is built to be shot in the face, that's how you win against him.
