OH GOD OH NO OH MAN RAY BRADBURY JUST DIED AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHY WHY WHY NOOOOOOOO :gonkity: :gonkity:

(I've got all of his books... :fluttersmith:)

On a more poignant note, the world will miss him and let us appreciate the breath of work that the man has given us by sharing his literature with each other.

Ray Bradbury; Dandelion Wine wrote:It was the face of spring, it was the face of summer, it was the warmness of clover breath. Pomegranate glowed in her lips, and the noon sky in her eyes. To touch her face was that always new experience of opening your window one December morning, early, and putting out your hand to the first white cool powdering of snow that had come, silently, with no announcement, in the night. And all of this, this breath-warmness and plum-tenderness was held forever in one miracle of photographic chemistry which no clock winds could blow upon to change one hour or one second; this fine first cool white snow would never melt, but live a thousand summers.

Following Ray Bradbury's Death, Thousands Of People Buy Kindle Version Of Book About Demise Of Paper Books

Here's something from my favorite short story of his:

A Blade of Grass wrote:Kront said, "Why did you do it? Why have you made this thing of flesh and imperfection?"
"Why?" Ultar turned to the box. "Look at him, this creature, this man, so small, so vulnerable. His life is worth something because of his very vulnerability. Out of his fear and terror and uncertainty he once created great art, great music and great literature. Do we? We do not.
"How can a civilization create when it lives forever and nothing is of value? Things only take value from their evanescence, things are only appreciated because they vanish. How beautiful a summer day is that is only one of a kind; you have all seen such days --- one of the few things of beauty that we know, the weather, which changes. We do not change, therefore there is no beauty and no art.
"See him here, in his box, dreaming, about to wake. Little frightened man, on the edge of death, but writing fine books to live long after. I've seen those books in forbidden libraries, full of love and tenderness and terror. And what was his music but a proclamation against the uncertainty of living and the sureness of death and dissolution? What perfect things came from such imperfect creatures. They were sublimely delicate and sublimely wrong, and they waged wars and did many bad things, which we, in our perfectness cannot understand.
"We cannot understand death, really, for it is so rare among us, and has no value. But this man knows death and beauty and for that reason I created him so that some of the beauty and uncertainty would return to the world. Only then could life have any meaning to me, little as I can appreciate it with my limited faculties.
"He had the pleasure of pain, yes, even pain a pleasure, in its own way, for it is feeling and being alive; he lived, and he ate, which we do not do, and knew the goodness of love and raising others like himself and he knew a thing called sleep, and in those sleepings he dreamed, a thing we never do, and here he is now, dreaming fine things we could never know or hope to understand. And you are here, afraid of him and afraid of beauty and meaning and value."

I was ambivalent about Wreck-It Ralph when I first read about it. After seeing that trailer, I can't decide whether I like it more now or less.

On one hand, cameos!

On the other hand, it feels strangely like a DreamWorks/Fox/Universal cartoon in a way I can't put my finger on. Which I guess still shouldn't bother me that much after their earlier attempts at CG, but still.

On the ... uh, foot? ...I really have to wonder what the tie-in video game is going to be like. Especially since Disney is known for having above-average licensed games to begin with.

Speaking from experience, this could very well be the case. The core of a film, series, game et cetera often gets lost in translation thanks to people who don't "get it".

Boy is that true. I still remember the old commercials for The Lion King that I saw that focused like 75% on Timon and Pumbaa. Granted, that sorta makes sense considering they were commercials airing during Saturday morning cartoons, but still.

One of my favourite films of all time. I don't think it was even promoted back in the Netherlands, I heard about it years after it was released and went in completely blind. I was absolutely floored.

Recently the regular marketing push started for Continuum--we're doing everything on the online side of things-- and the trailers that the channel's own marketing department put online are soulless, cheesetastic and downright silly. They don't capture the show at all, which plays a lot with fish-out-of-water, human interaction. It delves into how a person might feel when cut off from their loved ones through extreme circumstances. The show has it flaws, giving its actors hammy dialogue at times and doing things "because it's cool", but it has a certain something to it that is not emphasized at all.
The trailers and promos are basically "In a world... ruled by cheese... BANG BANG PEW PEW EXPLOSIONS...". It's in there sure, but it has purpose, it's a means to an end.

Not to mention that their upload quality is horrid. It's as if they don't care about their stuff and that makes me feel kinda :fluttersmith:
I rendered those behind the scenes videos in the best lossy format known to man :gonkity:

Reminds me of what happened with The Truman Show. Apparently, they marketed it as a wacky Jim Carrey comedy, mostly focusing on that one scene where he plays with the soap in the mirror. But they took away its context, that Truman feels that he's being watched and says "That one's for free." right into the camera.

Thank god it still did well at the box office, it's probably my favorite of Carrey's films.

I like the show. I'm no writer/artist, so I can't make fanart, and I don't care for fanfics, so I don't feel like I'm a part of the fandom. I don't add anything, and I don't have a need to belong to a group, so I don't latch onto the "culture" of it all, because I feel no need to. In fact, it seems a bit alien. :pinkieshrug:
