Best case scenario - VR will allow people to empathise with one another by allowing us to explore experiences from another's perspective. It could also offer people like me experiences of a different body without having to make permanent changes, so that I can get to know what life is like with breasts before taking that plunge.

Worse case scenario - It'll bring forth an ugly future where our standards of beauty are solidified by a new habit. We will be unsatisfied unless we are mimicking the actions in our VR porn while having sex, so that we see the hot porn star and not the person ahead of us. If it destroys the diversity of people's tastes into a monoculture of beauty ideals, people who differ from the ideal are then just toys for this game, and are not seen as sexy in their own right. While it allows us to have the body we'd want in VR, it could mean suffering for people who feel a dissonance between their virtual and real selves, when compared to those who are ideal and who can be seen in the flesh while having sex. Effectively creating two classes of bodies - those who need a glamer over them, and those who are worthy to be seen. That's kind of dystopian, hopefully unlikely, and possibly an idea for a book which focuses on an ideal character who faces the pressure to share her sex footage with others.

I think there have already been some studies on the difference between virtual and real in environments such as Second Life. It is a problem that's already here now, in some capacity. Teens are already growing up with being exposed to porn very early and having their view of sex heavily affected by that. A VR presence will bring these issues to the forefront, and they will need to be addressed. Personal VR is, for the moment, the closest we will get to a holodeck, and there are people who will put those goggles on and never take them off again.

Still, I think it could be used to improve the lives of lovers, not just provide a source of porn. Aside from increasing empathy and allowing an experience of what life could be like, one of the applications I see here is to increase the happiness of people in long distance relationships by allowing them to play with their partner. It would need a local proxy - doesn't have to be a human, could be a very simple robot or mannequin or something - but it would need to feel human enough to not break immersion, and it would need to be capable of recording the person and sending the footage to the partner, while the partner's proxy does the same thing in whichever remote location they are in.

(Of course, there are lots of forms of play that do need a physical component. While VR can show the visual results, and there'd likely be some degree of phantom pain, it probably wouldn't be enough for some fantasies - another local human would still be needed to play around with those).

I just don't see how much fun you could have while wearing that bulky headgear. No doubt it will improve in the future, but right now it seems like it would be the equivalent of having sexy time while wearing a space helmet. Sort of a mood killer. I mean, unless you're into that..

Well, as living creatures, our two most basic drives in life are to eat and to reproduce. We have a good idea of what we can and can't eat, but given the large psychological factor in sex, that way of behavior is a lot more nebulous.

I went to get a hormone implant and all I got was this lousy pap smear.

Apparently this is standard procedure and of course health and safety comes first and yaddayadda rationally I honestly get it, but irrationally I want to punch everything.

Now I got an appointment scheduled for when the results are back, which will be on Februrary 11.

Oh, also, the implant will be 70 euro more expensive than anticipated. Hooray.

Fucking hell. I have a couple of really tough days ahead of me and the feeling of confidence I would have gotten from finally having the implant was the one thing that I was hoping would tie me over. There goes that.

You'd think I'd be really used to being rejected and having to wait, and yeah I am, but even that is wearing extremely thin at some point, and that point has definitely been reached.

Guess I'm not done having ugly ticker things in my signature.
