I'm going to plug Animism here:

It's an upcoming motion comic television series from Zeros 2 Heroes Media, which is where I intern. We helped the animation team get through their crunch period by doing some layout work. Primarily though we're doing some awesome expanded universe/mythology kind of stuff that's huge and will launch during the summer :yay:

So the person who played the Alien in, well, Alien, was a 26-year-old Nigerian man by the name of Bolaji Badejo. Here's a video of him practicing the movements with the head piece on.

Well, here's my little contribution to the retro anime. I really don't think this was too obscure, my dad watched it as a kid on tv in the 60's. I just completely lose it every time when I watch this clip, and the intro is so hilarious (I hope you don't mind that I posted both of those things). :memories:

Ha! My mom watched that when it was still airing in Japan, alongside other black and white gems like "Astro Boy", "8th Man", and "Wonder 3" (aired in America as "Amazing 3")

The original name is "Tetsujin 28-go" (Iron Man #28). Here's the Japanese intro:

("Glico" is a candy company in Japan. They sponsored the show, hence their name being mentioned in the song)

I remember that Gigantor's creator, Mitsuteru Yokoyama, died back in 2004 when a fire broke out in his house. He was 69. :fluttersmith:

One of his other creations was Sally the Witch, which was created in response to the success of "Bewitched" in Japan. This led to a boom in "magical girl" genre in anime. Yes, the man who started the whole "giant robot" thing was also part of the early stages of "magic girl" manga.

Oh god I love that magic girl intro... the typical high-pitched Asian woman's voice. :v:
I also found a 2004 remake of Tetsujin 28-go and I started really getting into it. It's one of the few times I actually liked the remake, but maybe that's just because it couldn't get much worse than the original. :gotcha:

The creepy part is that the remake began one week before the creator died. The show began on April 8, 2004; Yokoyama-sensei died the following week, on the 15th. :starity:

Before the anime there was also a crappy live-action "Tetsujin" series in 1960. Only lasted 13 episodes. There was also a live-action "Astro Boy" series before the anime as well. Tezuka-sensei hated it, let's just say.

Everyone is familiar with Batman, and maybe some of you are familiar with his creator, Bob Kane. Ever wondered what else Kane did? Well, among other things he created two cartoons for the early days of TV animation.

One of them is Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse (1960), which appeared in 130 five-minute cartoons. It was produced by former Disney animator Sam Singer, who gained reputation for his poorly-made TV cartoons such as "Bucky and Pepito", "Pow-Wow the Indian Boy", and this.

The other is Cool McCool (1966), who was a star of a Saturday Morning cartoon that aired on NBC. It was produced by newspaper syndicate King Features, which at the time entered television business by producing animated versions of their comic strips such as "Popeye", "Beetle Bailey", and "Krazy Kat". Unlike those, though, "Cool McCool" was strictly a television product, although it was created by a comic book cartoonist.

Since we talked about "Gigantor"...

When the show ended in 1966 (it ran for 97 episodes), the animation studio replaced it with "Yusen Shonen Papi" (Space Boy Papi), which took over Tetsujin's timeslot in Japan. Basically it's about an alien boy who lands in Earth to determine whether it should be blown up or not. In the meantime he takes up a human identity and fights crime with a group of people he befriended.

Like "Tetsujin", it got sent over to USA. The English name is "Prince Planet" and it was syndicated to stations that wanted shows to fill up the children's timeslot.

All the English dubbed episodes was legally uploaded on YouTube. Watch them here.

Here's the English theme song:

The animation studio that made this and Gigantor is TCJ Animation Center, which is still in business making anime (although they changed the name to "Eiken" back in the 1970s). In English credits the company's name is misspelled as "TOJ".

There used to be a radio show and sitcom called "Amos & Andy", which was a misadventures of a trio of black stereotypes getting into get-rich schemes. By 1960s, however, with the growing civil rights movement the show was deemed racist and put off the air.

The producers, however, wasn't going to let little things like racism get in their way, so they decided to take old scripts, change the names, and animate the characters as talking animals. The result was "Calvin and the Colonel" and it was one of the first prime-time cartoons aimed at adults, airing on ABC in 1961-62 for one season with 26 episodes.

It got poor ratings, alas, and was cancelled.

Below is the final episode where the characters go on a road-trip to Nashville.

A double does of videos:

One day while walking in the rain, you may hear this playing due to this neat invention.

And now it seems that PBS has been doing these mini-documentaries on various subjects and posting them on Youtube. This one focuses on using technology to see beyond what the human eye can see normally. It's quite interesting.

PS: They actually have one on fan-art that's pretty cool. I'm surprised nothing MLP inspired was in it.
