She went to the doctor for a normal checkup and sometime between her last checkup and this one, the baby's heart stopped beating. Apparently this is relatively common in the first trimester. The doctor said that around 20-25% of pregnancies end in miscarriages. It doesn't make it any less devastating, but I was surprised to learn it happens that often. I talked to my sister on the phone for like an hour and she seemed to be doing relatively well, considering the circumstances. She is a nurse, so she has to deal with unfortunate medical news a lot and she's much stronger than I am in these kind of situations. Her husband took the rest of the week off of work to be with her. They have a 22-month-old daughter, and today she went up to my sister and said "mama sad?", climbed in her lap and hugged her. Ugggh it makes my heart break. :fluttersmith:

My heart goes out to you and your sister, Octavia. My aunt lost a baby due to miscarriage before. :fluttersmith:

I'm sure it's not an easy thing to cope with but I hope your sister (and you) are able to take it better one day at a time. Take care, you two.

Welp, more awful news for my sister. Not even three weeks after she lost her baby, her 9-year-old cat had to be rushed to the vet, where they found a huge abdominal mass that was most likely cancer. The vet kept her overnight for observation. Then she got a call at 5:30am on Christmas morning from the vet saying the cat had taken a turn for the worse and recommended immediate euthanasia. My sister didn't want her to suffer any longer, so they put her down without a chance for my sister to say goodbye. :fluttersmith:

This has been a heart-wrenching month for my family. I'm trying my best to comfort my sister, but it's difficult when I live so far away and it feels like no matter what I say, it's not going to be enough to make things better.

That's awful. For what little it's worth, I hope she feels better.(and you, too.) It's always painful to lose a pet. I remember feeling really broken up after our dog had to be put down, I can't imagine what it's like after something like that. Just try to think happy thoughts, and do what you can to help her think happy thoughts too.

I feel more than a little awkward posting in here because my problems seem pretty trivial compared to some of the other posts in here, but I guess venting is what this thread is for, so whatever.
I've mostly been trying to focus on the bright side of this Christmas (you know, getting things and eating) but I've had a stressful time today regardless of the nice things I've got. I guess I should start off with that I've been running on about 4 hours of sleep today, so bear that in mind. It's not really one thing that made today unpleasant, but a bunch of frustrating family issues that came to a point after building for a while.

There's a lot of tension in my complete, extended family. There've been long, painful fights over the inheritance of a farm after a grandparent's death, relatives insult each others behavior and beliefs behind their backs constantly without anyone ever saying anything out in the open, before the grandparents on one side of my family passed away they both ended up HATING each other and poisoning every conversation they both got into with their resentment, there's a cousin of mine who has ran away from home, and of course there's the creepy guy who nearly everyone suspects(for legitimate reasons) is a pedophile going around making everyone thoroughly uncomfortable after my grandmother had already seriously put-off my immediate family earlier today before anyone else got here by telling us how her family used to call these lumpy black candies "n----r toes".
If we're counting the people who weren't here, there's also the side of the family with people who obnoxiously foist their religious beliefs on people(like asking people they KNOW aren't religious to say grace) and practically forcing people to do weird, scheduled activities and games with them.

The worst part about all this is that I'm gay, and none of these people know(except for my parents, they do and are completely accepting). I think most of them would take it in stride, and I honestly do not give a fuck about so many of them that I think it wouldn't matter either way, but there's one part of the family I DO care about.
Me and my siblings have always been fairly close to the cousins on one side of our family. One summer, we went and saw them every single week. The problem here has to do with their parents-they are very conservative(are/were Palin supporters) and I really don't know what they would think about my sexuality.
I don't want to be distanced from my cousins because of their parents, and I don't want to make a rift between them and their parents.

So with all this terrible bullshit swirling around in my sleep-deprived mind, I decided to shut myself in the office away from the horrible awkward tension in my family and only come out to eat. I'm antisocial enough that they didn't think of it, but I've been fuming at them and myself for being a coward for hours now.
:pinkieshrug: tl;dr, goddammit family stop making me upset.
edit: My god, this is a lot of words about how my relatives bother me.

Slammed the door on my cousin's finger and hurt him really badly. Fingernail has turned black. He is a musician and if I did something permanent to his fingers I'll never forgive myself. :fluttersmith:

Oh God I'm a terrible person. Why did I close that door?! :gonkity:

I wouldn't beat yourself up over this too much! Something similar happened to me before: I slammed a car door shut on my own finger. It hurt like hell and my finger nail turned black, just like your cousin. It was sore for a while and eventually the finger nail fell out but a new one grew in. No permanent damage done, just a swollen finger and a missing finger nail for a little while.

None of my friends who I invited showed up at my birthday party :fluttersmith:

Got some apologies afterwords, but none of even bothered to call and say they weren't coming. It was the first fucking birthday I ever celebrated too, being raised JW. I know it was Christmas time and they had families to attend to, but it doesn't help me not feel like shit about it.

Also my fucking glasses just broke while I'm broke. :gonkity:

If they could have just waited a fucking week I would have been alright. Auuuugh.

When my little brother was about three or four, he was throwing a hissy fit over something while we were in the car. He opened the door and I closed it. Apparently on his hand. I didn't notice, and locked the door too. Since he'd been screaming and crying earlier, as far as I knew he was just carrying on. Somehow I didn't notice that he was stuck and trying to pull his hand out. I think he had his hand in there for a full five minutes before my mom came back from her errand and saw he was caught.

He was fine, his hand was still mostly cartilage, but I've felt horribly guilty about it ever since, and still brood on it sometimes and what I horrible jerk I was for doing such a thing, even unknowingly. Just saying I know exactly what you're going through. It sucks. Sorry.

And, well, just sorry to Octavia. I got nothing to offer, that's just a whole pile of sad.

My dog woke up to one of the worst holiday gifts a few days ago. What most likely is some sort of Mange. He’s been scratching himself raw until he whimpers and hardly gets any sleep or food in him without drugging him up on children's grade Antihistamine. The local vet will be here tomorrow so we should get him some sort of treatment for whatever's bothering him and send it right to hell. No creature should suffer like this.

So how'd this work out?
Wasn't anything too serious, I hope?

Hate to keep the rain pouring in regards to pet developments, but I think I may have one myself.

My cat's sort of an in-door/out-door sort of fellow, depending upon the season. Today, I decided to wash him up to have him stay inside and out of the cold for the rest of the winter.

Oh, I couldn't help but notice how thin he's gotten. :fluttersmith:
Thinking about taking him to the vet for an examination, but I'm not sure how much more they can tell me.
He's old. 16 going on 17, and I reckon that there's a good chance that this will be his last year.

I'm going to be watching him very carefully from now on, especially in regards to his diet, and maybe see if I can make an appointment in the near future for a professional opinion on the matter. He's looking a bit sickly, but at least he appears to be behaving as he always has, which is to say lazy and chill, just like me.
:yay:

It's going to suck losing him eventually, though. I practically grew up with that cat.

e: Oh man, he's definitely coming down with something. :nngh:

Max has another shot next week but the animal hospital we took him too sorted him right out and the mites are dead. He still needs to fight off the disease, which unfortunately is the kind of scabies that is contagious to humans. Thankfully no one else caught it and by next Tuesday he’ll be back to his begging, energetic self.

Make sure he gets medical attention and your affection ASAP. The worst part of an animal crisis is not knowing what to do with the poor thing.

Thanks for the concern. Although I felt more frustrated when he kept hurting himself and "the holidays" meant I had to sit and wait for professional help to come back from vacation, I know exactly what you mean.

Still wish I knew where he got the mites from. He's a house dog that rarely gets any contact with other pets these days.

Called a number of veterinarian offices, and the soonest I can get him to an emergency appointment is 1:45 PM tomorrow, and I'll have drive across state borders to do so. By Jove, I will do it.

Things really took a turn for the worse this morning. He was little shaky throughout his bath, but well enough to walk around and even to jump up in bed to take a nap with me.
When I woke up, he could barely stand on his own, much less hobble about or hold his own head up. He hasn't eaten anything since yesterday, and the water he occasionally tries to lap up gets thrown up in the litter box within an hour of ingestion.

It really pains me to see him so weak, given that he's been a pretty healthy bro throughout his entire life. Hopefully it's a flu-bug he can get over, or something a bit of minor surgery can fix, like a lodged piece of food in his esophagus. But I don't know.

In the meantime, the family and I are just doing our best to keep him purring throughout this ordeal (which he has, for the most part). Trying to let him get some rest at the moment.

I got really sick yesterday and couldn't sleep last night. After pounding down a dose each of two different painkillers and some Pepto Bismol, I was okay enough to direct the electricians working on my apartment this morning. When they broke for lunch, I asked them to wake me up when they got back.

At 7:30 PM, I woke up to find the new electrical box hanging out of the wall of my living room by an inch, one of its breakers tripped when I tried to turn on the lights, and my new set of thermometers showed that the running water temperature was 172F - 42 degrees over the health&safety recommendations and hot enough to cause a 3rd degree burn in about two fifths of a second.

Why was I checking the water temperature? Well besides the obvious, getting minor burns constantly, the surface temperature of the radiators I'm always brushing against is 220F.

Sometimes I hate this apartment. And I'm still sick and leaking mucus from my face holes.

Why the fuck are all these people dead or dying all of a sudden? I'm running out of old people, including my stepmom's 15 year old half-skeletal cat. Stroke, cancer, cancer, lupus, some kind of bowel thing I've never heard of, paranoid medical nihilism in the face of increasing health problems...

Death is horseshit. Don't let anyone tell you different.

Might as well get around to posting this before I end up putting it off again. :ohrarity:

Bud (my cat) passed away en route to the veterinarian clinic.
Was driving when I noticed something was wrong, and pulled over to the side of the road to confirm the creeping suspicion, and to take a breather. Then tried canceling the appointment with the vet in light of the development, but he ended up offering to examine the body briefly, given that there was a already a time slot made for me, and I was in the area. Didn't really confirm much as to the exact cause of death, though we did have a talk about common ailments affecting cats at that age. This, combined with some odd reports from family members on Bud's behavior in the recent weeks leading up to his death, have me thinking his symptoms on Wednesday were not as sudden an onset as I had believe.

Feeling much better now about it compared to how I felt two days ago, and I'm glad to have been at his side for practically the entire duration of the ordeal. Still damn sorry to see such a good pet go in such a fashion, though. :fluttersmith:

Gay question: There's at least a couple of you gay dudes on here, and, not being funny, I need some gay advice. Today, and for the weekend, we're havng a gay friend of ours from Oklahoma come and visit, and, always wanting to impress houseguests, I need entertaining advice.

I've never had a gay person visit/stay before, is there certain types of movies/food I should prepare? We cleaned yesterday and will clean a bit more today, but, is there anything specifically more I should do? Or are gays just like normal people and should be treated like any other houseguest?

I know this seems like I'm joking, but I'm dead fucking serious here. I want to believe that they're just like any other dude, but, if any/all of you gay dudes would PM me advice by the end of the day, that would be awesome.

(Don't ban me. I'm 100% seriously not trying to be an ass, I just want to be a good host.) :nngh:

I've had homosexual classmates over and I tend to just deal with them same way I do with everyone else. I run with the idea that giving them special treatment or something will instead make them feel uncomfortable.

Although sexuality's a part of a person's identity, it's only one part and identity is the sum of many parts. You'd be better off asking if he has food allergies or where he grew up as a kid to make decisions about what to serve him for dinner, etc. I know many people that display the more 'large and dramatic and big-deal' parts of their identity not holding a candle to the fact that they grew up in a doofy household where nobody knew what food was. I'm serious. Their social standing, sexuality... of no importance next to the fact that they were convinced that spaghetti was a vile, evil substance that should never be consumed. Due to the fact that as a child all they had had was somehow crunchy noodles with ketchup squirted on top. :pinkieshrug:

Just be you, and be nice, and don't serve them any food that will make them swell up like a balloon, and you'll be fine.

Just remember, do not feed your gay visitors shellfish. Gay people diverged as a species from shellfish somewhere around the ancient Cambrian period, and they still have a special connection to the crusty creatures of the sea. Exceptionally gay people even have a psychic connection to marine arthropods, so if you prepare live shellfish as they're coming over, they will be able to feel it's pain as you cook it, which can really put them off their dinner.
I find roasted plankton usually goes over well, as it is the traditional food of the gay's ancient ancestors.

(in all seriousness, don't treat them any differently than anyone else.)

In total honestly I can say I've never before now really felt like being taken aback by a question like this. :gah:

I can think of little more awkward than the idea of going to someone's house and having to feel like he's cleaned things up for me and is on unusual behavior because I'm gay. Like a reverse Birdcage kind of a thing.

Being gay is a lifelong exercise in silently and seamlessly making little compromises in order to be happy in a world that's largely geared to people of a different persuasion and working within a different dynamic. Going to someone's house is a prime example of such an occasion. You're a guest in their home; you'll naturally be expecting to find the atmosphere a bit more personal and alien, because that's what anyone visiting anyone else's home is like--everyone has different tastes. Part of why you're going there is to experience that different personality in its natural form. You wouldn't expect it any other way.

If I went to someone's house and found the walls covered with giant swimsuit posters and Playboys all over the floor, I'd just think the person is tacky and a slob, but I wouldn't take it as a faux pas against me. You'd clean it up because you want to appear classy, not because you think someone might be personally affronted by your choices in decor. So just try to make the same good impression on your visitor as if he were any other human being you'd like to welcome into your home. Trust me, he'll handle any possible isolated incidents of culture clash just fine. He's had plenty of practice.

Just to set the scene, he's a great big black dude, a proud "bear", and has that rediculous gay lisp thing. Like ones you see in movies, it is just surreal. That's what we tease him the most about.

"At least I trained the Southern accent out of me! That should count!"
"Yeah, but you kept that damned lisp! Train that out of you next!"

The gay lisp rules. Let your buddy fly the rainbow flag. :yay:

So I'm never using the United States Postal Service ever again.

At BroNYCon on January 7th I brought the pony Comic Con poster to have voice actresses Nicole Oliver, Andrea Libman, and Ashleigh Ball sign it. My mission is to get as many VAs (and show staff) to sign the poster as I can. Tara Strong is at an anime con in California right now. I live in New Jersey, so obviously I can't fly all the way out there to see Tara. But that's okay because our very own Willsun is going and offered to get my poster signed by Tara Strong!

Yay! :yay:

So the Monday after BroNYCon I went to the post office and shipped the poster to him. Even by normal mail standards it should arrive on time but, just to be safe, I made it priority mail to have it arrive by January 11th. Well, January 11th came and went and Willsun never got my poster. And then January 12th. And then January 13th. And now it's January 14th. He still hasn't gotten it and I shipped it six days ago. I have a delivery confirmation slip but all that tells me is that it went to the sorting facility, nothing more.

Enough is enough and I want answers. I'm going to the post office. :glare:

I just got back from the post office and they weren't really much help. All they could tell me is what I already knew: that it went to the sorting facility. They told me it's probably still en route and it just hasn't been scanned yet. Cool, that's why I get delivery confirmation. So it doesn't get scanned to let me know where it is. Obviously it isn't going to make to Willsun by January 11th because, well, that was three days ago. Priority mail, my ass.

:fluttersmith: "So, uh, do I get a refund for paying for priority mail when it still hasn't arrived yet?"
:v: "Sorry, but priority mail isn't a guarantee. Only express mail is. Priority means it will probably get there within two to three days."

That's cool because it's been six fucking days. :bluh:

So, obviously, I won't be getting Tara Strong's signature on my poster because the anime con is today and Willsun still hasn't gotten it. But right now I'm more worried about actually getting my poster back at all. :gonkity:

Goodbye, USPS. I'm never doing business with you again.

Well, spent the last few hours in the hospital with a friend because her retinas may be detaching (she saw a lightening flash, floaters becoming sparks, etc, in her right eye). I haven't actually been to one in ages, we went to emergency first, then got transferred to a doctor who said it's not looking too bad, but he referred her to an ophthalmologist at the GH and we'll be going there tomorrow morning. She may end up needing laser surgery again, not sure yet.

All in all though, we were there for less than two hours, so fuck you Ron Paul. :jingo: <--- This but with a maple leaf.

So far, so good, but still, it's worrying that a good friend could go half blind.

LYRA is the cool pony who likes to hang out. You can find most of the cool ponies with her. LYRA can just chill and do whatever and totally relax. "Take it easy" is the LYRA motto, for example, that's how laid back she is.

I screwed up an interview today (for a boring campus job) by absolutely forgetting some important lines, stammering, mixing up some responses, and talking in a monotone voice.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Why do I suck at speaking to important people? I don't understand what's so hard about talking publicly and yet I can't fully do it with grace.

I'm bad at this. It's also embarrassing that I have NO PREVIOUS JOB EXPERIENCE so it's not like I had a chance. Fuck. Sigh. I did apply for another campus job, so who knows?

...wow, I feel better now after typing all that. :v:

I feel for you, Those are the same reasons I'm still having trouble bringing myself to apply for anything or write my resume. I can't really imagine a scenario where I'd do well in a job interview. :facehoof:

I've literally had an interviewer say to my face, "you interview like crap." I still ended up getting that job, though.

Now I am self-employed, so I never have to deal with a job interview again :pinkietoot:

Wow. Having that done in America would take all day. They might even send you home, saying "oh, it's just a migraine, you'll be fine" or somehow taking the path of least resistance. I really hate the healthcare/insurance system in this country. :bluh:

Best of luck to your friend!
