Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
No, seriously, I want people to chat with about how hilariously bad this is.
This book makes me realize how clever and subtle The Big Bang Theory is with pop culture references by comparison. At least in that show, the heavy handed references. There's a sense in the show that at least the characters come off as liking these things they reference. And then every reference needs explaining.
Today's adventure. The hero gets dumped, and goes to buy a sex bot.

This book throws dozens at you and it feels like the author is just going down a list, not that there's any fond remembrance of these things. And the main character is.... incredibly bad. Every nerd stereotype rolled into one and supercharged.IOI required its egg hunters, which it referred to as “oologists,” to use their employee numbers as their OASIS avatar names. These numbers were all six digits in length, and they also began with the numeral “6,” so everyone began calling them the Sixers. These days, most gunters referred to them as “the Sux0rz.” (Because they sucked.)
Today's adventure. The hero gets dumped, and goes to buy a sex bot.

I've been listening to the audiobook, and I legitimately feel bad for Wil Wheaton.

bwaaahahaha, I can't even finish that sentence.
At least the movie has Tracer and FemShep in cameos, even though they're not from the 80s.
Poor Tracer and FemShep.

Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
This is the real WTF for me. If Ready Player One is meant as a love letter to the '80s, why are there any characters more modern than that in the movie? Could it be that the book and movie are not meant strictly as nostalgia vehicles for '80s kids, but are meant more as generic geek bait?Angel Beat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:23 pmAt least the movie has Tracer and FemShep in cameos, even though they're not from the 80s.

He loves videogames (creating the medal of honour franchise along others) and half the references are his films so no doubt he loves it.Aria Genisi wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:00 pmAnd Steven Spielburg directed a movie version of this that's coming out this year.

Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
I might have said this before, but what really gets me is that the book seems to be a love letter to the kind of gatekeeping that's made geek culture so toxic lately. Like, the contest that's central to the plot is the ultimate act of gatekeeping—taking the biggest fortune ever and leaving it to whoever knows the most geek-culture minutiae.
Also, the trailer for the movie uses "Tom Sawyer", a song that I've been led to believe is literally about John Galt, or at least that type of person. As if it couldn't get any cringier.

Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
i read a little bit of rpo and it felt like a guy really trying hard to relive his childhood through the lense of a future which is infinitely worse than his childhood (which was the best time to be a child, obviously)
if it were a satire on 80's nostalgia it might've been worthwhile. instead it just cashed in.

And I'm done with that.
The movie will surely be a spectacle to see, but man is this a bad story with some bad characters.

Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
I read Ready Player One a while ago. I think the part where the protagonist describes his totally cool DeLorean from Back to the Future with Knight Rider scanner and Ghostbusters symbols and license plate slapped onto it accurately describes how the book itself is just a random pile of 80s pop culture crap stuck together with little thought about if it even should go together like that.
I shall sing you the song of my people

Re: Everyone should read "Ready Player One"
I feel like the character and plot just slipped through my mind while listening to it. All I heard were a list of 1980s pop culture references.
How about that indeed.

Wasn't this the book with the scene where the protagonist admits to the girl he's chatting with online that he's basically been stalking her to make sure she was really a girl or something when the subject of, "What would you do if I was a guy in real life, though?" came up, or something along those lines?

That video looks like a horrible message board I'd avoid.
I think the 80's need to be erased from our timeline, even if it means erasing me.

All "geek credibility" of this book should be lost when they proclaim Indiana Jones 4 as an unwatchable abomination, but talk about how they watched the Star Wars Prequels.

The Prequels are entertaining in a B movie kind of way, where Crystal Skull is mostly just boring. The Doctor wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2018 11:28 pmAll "geek credibility" of this book should be lost when they proclaim Indiana Jones 4 as an unwatchable abomination, but talk about how they watched the Star Wars Prequels.

Kind of. The girl in the book runs a super-famous blog. He's a fan of said blog and reads it, he doesn't really stalk her. They end up meeting and becoming friends. Then she dumps him.W.T. Then he literally...
That "what if I was a guy" thing totally happened though.

I'm not sure Cline even has enough awareness to count as transphobic.
(Her terrible secret she hides throughout the whole book: Yes, she's a hot girl, but she also has a birthmark and thinks no one can love her because of it.)Parzival: Yes. After analyzing the available data, I’ve concluded that you must be a female.
Art3mis: Why must I?
Parzival: Because I don’t want to find out that I’ve got a crush on some 300 lb. dude named Chuck who lives in his mother’s basement in suburban Detroit.
Art3mis: You’ve got a crush on me?
Parzival: You should have already figured that out on your own, Clouseau.
Art3mis: What if I were a 300 lb. gal named Charlene, who lives in her mom’s basement in suburban Detroit? Would you still have a crush on me then?
Parzival: I don’t know. Do you live in your mother’s basement?
Art3mis: No.
Parzival: Yeah. Then I probably still would.
Art3mis: So I’m supposed to believe you’re one of those mythical guys who only cares about a woman’s personality, and not about the package it comes in?
Parzival: Why is it that you assume I’m a man?
Art3mis: Please. It’s obvious. I get nothing but boy-vibes coming from you.
