Its about mistakenly believing that self-assuredness can only be demonstrated through anger. Sometimes its to hide insecurity or anxiety through showing anger instead of fear. It can also be about power tripping, which gives people a rush.

People who are mean all the time are usually very insecure, so they insult others to feel like they're better than someone else. They need constant boosts to their self-esteem and being a jerk is a quick and easy way to convince themselves that they're better than someone else and more importantly, it shifts the blame of their own misery from themselves onto someone else.

when I was a (relative) kid and taking horseback riding lessons there was a horse at the stables called Skipper, I got to ride him once or twice

this was like 25 years ago so he might be dead now
