Do your civic duty :glare:

But it’s really not that bad, you can just take a book along and you might not even have to serve on an actual jury.

I've been called for Jury Duty 3 times and only served on an actual jury once. It was a DUI case and I got a whopping $54 for about 18 hours of service over 2 days. :ohrarity:

Well, there was a drama that lasted less than 30 minutes. I thought I lost my favorite fountain pen at the library, so we drove there (it's open until 10pm) but no matter how much I looked, I couldn't find it. Asked several library workers there, and they didn't see it either. Not to mention, hardly anyone showed up today since it's summer.

Returned home, dejected....and it turns out the pen was in a different backpack :-I (I have two identical ones)

...I act really irrational when it comes to fountain pens :-I :-I :-I

I finally have a guide on artists perspective that

1. Doesn't assume I'm drawing from life.
2. Doesn't assume I'm looking to create exact technical drawings using crazy mathematical techniques.
3. Is a rather detailed book rather than some other artist's half explained internet guide.

This book is magical and mindblowing but applying it is going to be a lot of work.

Perspective for Comic Book Artists by David Chelsea. It's 170 pages and it's written in comic book form, so it's not massive or dense to read at all. It's very much like Scott McCloud's books, and the author actually cites McCloud as one of his inspirations in writing this book. The author goes right from the basics (e.g. things that are in front of others overlap things which are behind) through to some later pages which I haven't got to yet but they look advanced. He explains everything in an easy to follow way. At the minute I'm as far as him walking me through how to use two and three point perspective, and I'm only about 80 pages in.

While it is aimed at comic book artists, I'd recommend it for anyone making art from their imagination. Some of the stuff I thought I understood he actually explains in a different and mindblowing way, so even if you're experienced it may be worth a look.

Holy shit, I had that book as a kid. One of my first "how to do comics" guide I ever read.

I don't have it anymore, but I remember it being thought-provoking and very educational. Definitely worth checking out.

On a similar line, what would be a good beginner’s guide for someone who doesn’t know how to draw well? I’m under no illusions that I’ll ever be a great artist, but I’d like another new hobby that keeps me from staying on the internet all day when I’m not doing chores and errands.

I want to draw comics, which is my goal.

Funnily enough I've picked up Figure Drawing For All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis. I won't start that until after I've read and started working on Perspective For Comic Book Artists.

I picked up these two books because I looked at a recording of a drawing stream Rebecca Sugar did a while back. It was just a stream of her talking about drawing with some cool people while laying some doodles down on a huge drawing tablet. The people there took a few questions from chat and one was on books she'd recommend. She recommended these two.

What I've heard is that Perspective... will teach someone a lot about creating a scene for a panel, and will begin to talk about how to draw a figure in perspective. Then Figure Drawing will go in depth into figure drawing, so what you end up with is a good knowledge of how to draw a scene and then how to put some dudes in that scene.

I also have a book which I really need to read again, and that's Making Comics by Scott McCloud. This is an easy to follow and yet in depth look at how to tell a story using comic book format. It starts off with the bare basics of what a panel is, speech bubbles and so on. It eventually gets pretty mind blowing.

I think if you want to get into comics this could be a good start, but I have yet to actually prove that it works.

It might be worthwhile to consider that the -holic term usually refers to some form of addiction. It just doesn't get the same concern that alcoholic has. Language is fluid and all that, but I think it's still worthwhile to consider that if we like something so much we would call ourselves addicted to it and not even bat an eye, we might like that thing a bit too much, or at least talk about it flippantly. Joke-y or ironic terms have that annoying tendency of becoming a cover for some of our actual feelings about the thing in question. No matter how much you enjoy keeping busy, respect your other needs too. Just my 2 cents.

I've been very much guilty of overworking, and many of the things she talked about in the video has happened with me (including getting moody and snapping at other people). And while I enjoyed Bronycon, I definitely missed my usual routine, to the point I almost instantaneously got back to it the minute I returned home.

I started relaxing more the past few months, though, after one of my supervisors told me to take it easy (if HE was concerned, then hoo boy :-I). So I did and, huh, I still got a ton done anyway without feeling stressed. There's a lesson here.

I don't deny that I enjoy routine, and I also acknowledge that I have to take a break from it from time to time. I guess I can only handle breaks in small chunks, if that makes sense.

It's certainly all about a balance. Not everything we enjoy at first glance is good for us in the long term. I'd even argue that everything needs balance, even shit you really love, because burning out on that hurts extra hard.

Very glad to hear you're trying to be more relaxed. It's totally fine you enjoy your work and your routine! Just all about that balance and whatnot. I've burned myself out on shit several times in the past because I told myself I'd totally do everything problem-free *this* time and no, turns out, you can never do it problem-free, you should do it in a way where you can deal with problems at least better than "not at all" :v:

Thank you for introducing me to Jaiden Animations. :)

And the key difference between working hard and overworking is the answer to this question: am I slowly killing myself? And be honest. :rainbert: The answer’s subjective and varies from person to person, and situation to situation, but basically, take a moment every so often to step back and gauge how sustainable your work habit is.

I'll grant in my case that my job is something I already enjoy doing (I had a job I hated before, and never again).

In Japan there's a thing called "karoshi", where people overwork to death. This has happened to manga and anime industry as well.

I have always been envious of comic creators who work long hours, and wanted to achieve that. But upon seeing and hearing about the long-term health effects, including literal death...kinda weary about it these days

(and yes, Jaiden is good)
