Is there a specific reason why they colored the keys that way?

why didn't they model them after the actual computers on the enterprise?

I've got to guess it's to try to emulate a panel display, but even the back of the box doesn't appear to be too helpful on the specifics from the snippets we can see here:

I'd love a computer the size of a wall which has nothing but flashing squares for a UI
