ITT I talk about why I like detachable stuff

oh no, Fizzbuzz, your gimmick!
Well, if it's "my" gimmick, I should at least own it. :twiright:

I guess most everyone knows that I like the toony trope of characters having detachable body parts. For me, most of the appeal is difficult to articulate beyond simply thinking it's fun. The times FiM did it (which are a few, like what happened to Pinkie Pie in Magic Duel) always got a laugh out of me, and unlike a lot of other silly cartoon stuff, it's so nonsensical that I never felt like it'd be painful or anything. I also think it'd be nice since, in times when I'm feeling severely lazy, I imagine it'd be comfortable to take off your head and limbs like taking off shoes and heavy clothing. (Maybe a little of it is the part of me that looks at cyberpunk media and wishes for the day when upgrading and modifying your body is commonplace, but filtered through my cutesy cartoon aesthetic.)

At this point, it really does feel like it's part of my look, though. Like with my forums avatar, I'd originally drawn it on a whim just before the horsepocalypse and then uploaded it because I needed an avatar when the new forums came online, but I've had that for so long that it feels like it's more than that now. As an example, I saw this post on Tumblr recently, which inspired me to draw my ponysona in his normal pony form but otherwise like in my avatar:
Image
As I was drawing this, it felt less like I was drawing something different and more like I was drawing him just as he should be (for lack of a better term). Identity can be weird, huh?

Anyway, if you ever wondered about my interest in this regard, you can ask about it here if you want.

I've actually never played any of those games and have no particular love for them (if I did have to point to games for that sort of inspiration, I'd mention the Kirby games, a series I do dearly love). When I first drew it I just thought it looked like having floating detached parts would be fun, as well as interesting in how it's more visually different vs. how past pictures of pony-me only sometimes had him with any of his parts off.

Do you like -everything- to be detachable or would you like to keep, like, eyes and stuff where they are? Are there limits or would you be like "hmm detachable fingernails :ponder: "

Depends on if it'd look fun and not horrifying, I suppose. I always mostly imagined having a detachable head and limbs and maybe midsection and such, but this is still one of my favorite visual gags from our fandom's work back in the day, so I might do something like that if I could make such a joke.

What is your favorite kinda cartoon gag that can be done with detachable body parts?

If not Rayman or Dynamite Headdie then it's Vectorman, PLOK, Rystar, Mr Potatohead, or just LEGO in general.

How do you feel when characters have a prosthetic body part and they're shown detached sometimes?

I may or may not have a certain character who has a detachable prosthetic tail :liarjack:

You know how it feels when you're lifting or carrying something, and it's so heavy that your arms might fall off? Well, what if that actually happened? It might be a little inconvenient, but I always thought it was funny.

Kat's tail would definitely be more useful detached than my ponysona's, seeing as a pony's tail is nearly all hair.

If I made a detachable character they'd be this really dopey type going through a rough patch of unemployment. They'd have their head in the computer, their arm in the fridge and their lower half in the bathroom.

They'd be tired of people thinking that they're being funny by saying "pull yourself together"

Even if things don't go so well for me after I get my degree, I suppose I'll at least have this gimmick to fall back on.

This'd likely work back when he still had all his limbs, but with them all detached as I've drawn him lately, I imagine this'd more just give him a serious jostling around.

Bumping mostly for new art (on paper this time!) and a bit for blathering.

I find it interesting how, in my experience, over time this came to feel normal. Like when I drew my ponysona momentarily having four hands as a joke response to a multi-armed picture, that felt and still feels strange despite it being a similar sort of a cartoon gimmick. I guess some of what each of us finds funny/interesting just doesn't have a rational explanation. :pinkieshrug:

I totally know that feeling of something normally weird starting to feel weirdly normal, and recently I fell out of my interest for a while only to get back into it and it felt... I don't know, foreign, but invigorating. I'm glad you've got something that makes you unique and happy, and something you can talk about openly.

Because I totally can't talk about my thing openly. :v: :nngh:

If I were any bigger than I already am, I'm afraid I'd go from just clumsy to outright destructive. I'm fine with my current size, even if it means no big hugs.

Speaking of hugs, when I think about it, I figure that hugging someone when you have floating hands and no arms otherwise would feel a bit like patting that person on the back. But at least the intent's there!
