"Hilda" is a good show

Post by Mr. Big (?) » Sat Oct 06, 2018 12:53 am

Hilda is a new cartoon that came out on Netflix recently. Based on a series of graphic novels by Luke Pearson, the fantasy series focuses on a blue-haired girl named Hilda who moves to a new city with her mom, where she encounters fantastical creatures of all kinds, including trolls, bureaucratic elves, giants, etc.

It's been described as a British "Gravity Falls" by some. I don't know if I would go that far, although there's an overlap between fans of both shows.

As far as the book series, the following's available so far:

1. Hildafolk (2010; reprinted in 2015 as Hilda and the Troll)
2. Hilda and the Midnight Giant (2012)
3. Hilda and the Bird Parade (2012)
4. Hilda and the Black Hound (2014)
5. Hilda and the Stone Forest (2016)

The show covers the first 4 books, although a good chunk are newly-created stories created just for the show.

It's worth checking out if you haven't done so yet.

I recommend. Both the show and the books. Reading the books after seeing the show is quite strange for me because going into the books I had the expectation to be quite similar to the show.
Even more strangely there are a ton of things that are in common but the books differ a lot in tone and all the side characters that the show has are very much in the background, however the mother is more in the spotlight, especially in The Stone Forest.
The most notable detail I want to point out is in The Bird Parade: In the show her mother shows Hilda the best vantage point on the parade, however in the book Hilda shows her mother the best viewing spot.
I'm not complaining but I'm rather fascinated by everything both media offer and change.

As far as the whole package goes I'd say that the show is far superior to the books. The characters are more fleshed-out and the plots are more involved.

I just bought the first 2 books, so it'll be interesting to see how they differ from the show.

It's worth it just for the color treatments alone. It's not very challenging, but it is very British.

Got the book version of "Hilda and the Bird Parade". There are definitely a lot of changes from the animated version, although the core plot (Hilda helps a bird regain his memory) is the same.

Here's a bit that wasn't in the cartoon :-I (although the "stick legs" dialogue was retained in the show)

A bit late, but season 2 has been confirmed:

It was also announced that the next book, "Hilda and the Mountain King", will come out in Fall 2019.

Good. It'd be a shame if it wasn't continued.

Book-wise It's strange for me that it takes so long to write and draw the book. Hilda and The Stone Forest was released in October 2016.
Even though I read The Stone Forest a few weeks ago I'm annoyed that it takes too long to read the next book.
Maybe I'm spoiled by the monthly releases of the comics I usually read but that's still too long to bear.

While there are people who can draw comics super fast, they're also very time-consuming to create that requires lots of planning. Especially with Hilda, which is drawn much larger than a standard comic book, with detailed backgrounds.
