Re: Nintendo's done it: furry Pokemon.
This movie looks like it's going to be both worse and better than all those live action cartoon adaptation movies it resembles. The game it's based on was already a really silly concept for a game, even by Nintendo standards, set in what was already a weird universe even by video game standards. And now to try to get people to buy into all of it in a live-action movie, PLUS the "animal that can talk but only the protagonist can understand them" cliché?
But the Mr. Mime scene was funny. The old "mime pretends to do something and it happens for real" gag will never not get a laugh out of me. Honestly, I would love to see some comedy film or video game really dig into the idea of mimes having Ork-like reality-warping powers. Maybe as a playable class in the same RPG that lets you play as a Disney princess that can command woodland creatures.

It makes me wonder about the alternate universe where that "ponies but in the real world" movie pitch worked out.

Like, I'm getting a sort of Wreck-It Ralph/Scott Pilgrim vibe from some of the scenes, where if you're actually into Pokemon and get all the references, you'll be going through it going "Hey, I recognize that thing! Ha, they actually did something with it instead of just having it be a reference for reference's sake" but everyone else is just going to be left feeling like they're missing a lot of the appeal. The question is whether the movie has any other tricks up its sleeve to fill the rest of the run time, or if it's just going to be like watching the Smurfs movies.

First, why make a movie based on Detective Pikachu
Second, why is nintendo allowing them to pronounce it "poke-a-mon" in the movie

I would be in this camp if it wasn't for the fact that this is extremely a spinoff and there's no way they're keeping these designs as the 'canon' onesThe Doctor wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 6:55 pmDay 1.

I hope they strictly follow the Pokedex with regards to height and weight.
Did you know Charizard is only 5' 7"? Not as imposing as the anime would have you believe.

I think this is the pronunciation that Nintendo and TPC have favored for a few years now. At least, that's how Reggie and Bill have pronounced it in various Nintendo Directs, and I think that's how the Smash Bros. announcer pronounced it in Brawl when anyone picked Pokemon Trainer.Gloomy Rube wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 5:32 pmSecond, why is nintendo allowing them to pronounce it "poke-a-mon" in the movie

is this like how Hyundai cars have all their ads pronounce it "Hun-day" or Subaru pronounces it "Soobuh-roo"?Fizzbuzz wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 9:41 pmI think this is the pronunciation that Nintendo and TPC have favored for a few years now. Re: Nintendo's done it: furry Pokemon.
Wait, is that not the correct way to pronounce Subaru? Is the emphasis supposed to be on the second syllable or something?
Anyway, I object to that pronunciation of Pokémon. They put an accent mark over the E specifically as a pronunciation aid, even though Japanese doesn't use accent marks, because Americans generally assume (from French) that it means "pronounce it like a long A".

It would be more correct to say "Soo-Baa-Roo" (The 'buh' in the middle the advertisers use instead of baa is a sound that doesn't exist in Japanese)

Eh, that's getting into NPR territory, where you're basically putting on an accent for one word.Gloomy Rube wrote: ↑Tue Nov 13, 2018 8:31 amIt would be more correct to say "Soo-Baa-Roo" (The 'buh' in the middle the advertisers use instead of baa is a sound that doesn't exist in Japanese)

Re: Nintendo's done it: furry Pokemon.
Pronouncing words right for the language it comes from isn't an accent, that's silly. That'd be like saying that if you don't pronounce "Menage a trois" as men-age, then long a, then troy-s that that means you're 'putting on an accent'.

Re: Nintendo's done it: furry Pokemon.
Pronunciations of words vary depending on where you are. The word "amarillo" in Spanish is pronounced completely differently than the city in Texas. Words get localized and they stick.

Re: Nintendo's done it: furry Pokemon.
There's got to be a threshold where it's close enough. If the middle A in "Subaru" is a sticking point, what about the R? Do I have to do that halfway-between-R-and-L thing?
