Just one question:

You brought up William Henry Harrison in another thread. Did he do anything consequential during the one month he was president, aside from being the first to die in office?

Do you think Presi-King Thomas Edison still would've been forced to lead his mechanized infantry into battle against the Celts even if Robin Hood, Billy the Kid, Geronimo and Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus had succeeded in their assassination attempt on Queen Medb?

Re: AMA U.S. history
Utah gave women the right to vote very early during their territorial period (1870). Ostensibly, this was done because they needed married white women to help counterbalance the votes of male Mexican and Chinese miners who had moved into the state. There was an argument made that giving these women the vote would lead to the elimination of polygamy... but that didn't happen; this was used by anti-suffragists in the 1890s to argue that votes for women would not improve society. Congress also passed a bill in the 1880s that required Utah undo women's suffrage as a condition of applying for statehood; Utah women did not have their right to vote restored until 1896.Perrydotto wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 8:10 pmtell me a random neat fact about Utah that I can impress my in-laws with

Are you basing this on their physical condition during their presidency, or at the peak of their physical prowess before presidency?Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 10:49 pmCould you please rank the top 3 U.S. Presidents as measured in unarmed combat prowess

Re: AMA U.S. history
In 1933, FDR's party controlled 60 Senate seats and over 300 House seats, so you'd need something like that... which won't happen due to the rural-to-urban migration that has increasingly concentrated Senate power in conservative states and the use of partisan gerrymandering in the House.

Hmm... with weapons is easier, but unarmed combat is an entirely different topic. Jackson and Washington, for example, had a lot of military experience, but neither seems quite as intimidating without a sword, a gun or a cane.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Sun Dec 09, 2018 3:02 pmAt whatever stage in their life was their fighting prime.
#1 Theodore Roosevelt would be at the top; he was always tough and he ran a judo club in the White House.
#2 Chester A. Arthur... over 6 feet tall and surprisingly robust. Even at a young age he engaged in fistfights with students who supported Democrats.
#3 William Howard Taft... a wrestling champion in college.

Also, which president was it who beat the ever-loving shit out of a would-be assassin with a cane?

Lincoln was also a bit of a wrestler in his day, but I can’t dispute Teddy mopping the floor with everyone else.

What’s up with the Bill of Rights being added later? Was there any defensible reason not to enumerate these rights from the start?

Re: AMA U.S. history
I don't consider playing offensive line to be analogous to a background in wrestling or boxing. when it comes to unarmed combat.
You're thinking of Andrew Jackson; however the degree to which he beat his would-be assassin was greatly exaggerated after the fact, as part of the lionization effort which surrounded Jackson's popularity as the "common man's president"

Re: AMA U.S. history
Federalists felt that those rights were already implied strongly enough and would be protected by individual citizens and the individual states, so there was no need to encode them in written federal law.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 2:28 pmWhat’s up with the Bill of Rights being added later? Re: AMA U.S. history
Oh, this has been bugging me for a while because nobody else knows the answer, and I couldn't find it myself. This is an election ad from 1950s:
Who does "Bob" refer to? Eisenhower's running mate was Richard Nixon.

Re: AMA U.S. history
The comments on the video note that it's misdated: the ad was from the 1952 election, when Adlai Stevenson's running mate was John J. Sparkman ("Adlai and John" wouldn't have made sense in 1956, when it was Adlai and Estes Kefauver).
Based on that, I'm guessing "Bob" was Robert A. Taft (son of William Howard), Ike's bitter rival in the Republican primary.

Re: AMA U.S. history
Correct. Optics-wise, it was damn near impossible to say anything negative about the war hero Eisenhower in 1952... so this ad pivoted to Taft, who was the most powerful Republican Senator but really unpopular in some parts of the country. Eisenhower had shied away from politics prior to 1952 and was practically dragged into campaigning for president out of a sense of national duty, so the concept of the ad was that Taft would be pulling his strings. Think of how recent attack ads against Democrats in the 2018 election focused more on Pelosi and Schumer than the actual candidates, and blow that up to a presidential level.Mechanical Ape wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 1:37 amThe comments on the video note that it's misdated: the ad was from the 1952 election, when Adlai Stevenson's running mate was John J.
