displaying fear is oft considered a feminine concept whereas instilling it is considered masculine

That's so weird, I've always seen it as the opposite. Like, when someone says "ghost" I assume "she" and the same with like, eldritch forces and other high-spook beings.

Now I'm wondering how I got that idea in the first place since, as you say, it really seems like society thinks the opposite. :ponder:

Ghosts in Japanese horror tend to be female more than male, I think. It probably varies all over the world.

it could be as simple as a linguistic connection because ghost and girl start with the same letter, and there are apparently times when our brains decide to make loose associations based on words/letters alone. for instance i subconsciously consider K to be a feminine letter for some reason or another

it could also be as complex as an imprinted association brought about by familiarity with feminine ghost(s) of some kind, perhaps from a show or movie you saw at a young age

disclaimer i am not a psychologist so i dunno lol

Oh, I think you solved it. My like, entire 3rd grade life during recess was about Bloody Mary, the bathroom ghost. My friend and I made up some deep lore regarding her and I bet that's where it comes from, and now I always get the warm fuzzies whenever someone mentions spooky ghosts because it reminds me of those carefree times. At least, that makes sense to me. :v:

it's weird how one man's quest to get his rocks off resulted in a ghost summoning ritual and a cocktail

I assume all ghosts are dudes, because I punch them.
