For being based on a picture from 2012, it's a rather fitting song for Twilight Sparkle. After all, considering that song's chorus, it's clearly a protest song meant to raise awareness of light pollution, since the song's singers are forced to replace meteors blazing across the sky with the faint mimicry of aircraft passing through the night! The early days of the show had Twilight expressing at least a vague interest in astronomy (see in particular Owl's Well That Ends Well, in which the cold open and first act featured Twilight and Spike preparing for and then observing a meteor shower, then later Twilight was writing about the basic structure of comets); likely, this was based on Lauren Faust's early concepts for the show, where she had the idea that unicorns in particular had a strong tradition of stargazing. This aspect of her has largely fallen away in seasons since, but again for something drawn in 2012, it fits quite well!

No clue about Mordecai. I never watched Regular Show.

Then again, maybe her interest in astronomy never fully abated. We can look to A Rockhoof and a Hard Place as a very recent example, where Twilight explains that proper motion of the stars exists in Equestria's universe. Proper motion, of course, also involves the movement of the observer's solar system; if an entire constellation could move significantly away from the northwest over the course of a mere thousand years, it strikes me as likely that either the stars are generally much closer to the observer than ours are or that Equestria's geocentric system is absolutely blitzing through space. If Twilight or anyone else should ever happen to mention particularly extreme values of redshift for stars in one part of the sky, we can assume it's the latter.
