considering that the second one comes after the first one, I don't believe they're actually not allowed back in ihop

You know, this highlights something that's been bugging me. Disney kind of pulled the same thing with Nick in Zootopia. He's supposed to be this con-artist type, but not only do his schemes not involve anything actually illegal, he even went out of his way to get all the relevant paperwork. They try to play it off as thatsthejoke.jpg, but you just know some upper-management guy at Disney was like "No, we can't have one of the main characters doing crimes. Not even if Judy needs something to hold over his head. Well, how about he doesn't pay his taxes? After all, that's not really a crime, know what I'm sayin'? I mean, who's stealin' from who, eh? Wink wink!"

To be fair, one of the lessons that gangsters took from the way Al Capone got brought down for not doing his taxes was to A) launder the money and then B) pay taxes on enough of it that the IRS didn’t look too closely. Also the reason why they always had “Totally Legitimate, We Swear” front businesses through which income could be moved. The Mafia loved to be involved with anything that had a coin slot in it, as well as laundries, because it was the ultimate way to launder money—no serial numbers, essentially untraceable, and as long as they paid taxes on what they were supposedly being paid for laundry services, vending machine distribution, jukeboxes, soda machines, Vegas slot machine distribution (which they were selling back to themselves!) and so on, it was harder to get them on any charges unless the feds spent years and years building a RICO case.
It was even better for the mob when they managed to infiltrate the record label division of MCA—they could have loads of cassettes manufactured in MCA’s own plants off the books, and sell them at cutthroat low prices to one stop shops, distributors, truck stops, and discount stores. For a few years, they had an endless supply of pirate product that was indistinguishable from the real thing, because it was the real thing. Except they didn’t have to pay any royalties to the artists and none of the money went to the parent company. William Knoedelseder’s book Stiffed: A True Story of MCA, The Music Business, and the Mafia covers this particular scam in detail.
And if you want to know about the Mafia’s role in the payola scandals over the last few decades, grab the revised edition of Fredric Dannen’s Hit Men. The most recent edition covers up to the time just before Spotify became a thing, although it still mainly focuses on the 1970s and 1980s. Payola is still going on today, despite being illegal in theory. Nobody’s going to be shocked to learn that the music business is sleazy and gross as hell, I suppose.

Re: Post the last thing you laughed at online
I recently watched an "Archer" episode (during the "Vice" season) where Malory was looking to launder money after the government shut down her organization. Cyril suggested opening a laundry shop for the very reasons you described (Malory initially thought Cyril was confusing money launder with the "cleaning clothes" kind). Never realized this was a common thing with mobsters.Madeline wrote: ↑Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:38 pmThe Mafia loved to be involved with anything that had a coin slot in it, as well as laundries, because it was the ultimate way to launder money—no serial numbers, essentially untraceable, and as long as they paid taxes on what they were supposedly being paid for laundry services, vending machine distribution, jukeboxes, soda machines, Vegas slot machine distribution (which they were selling back to themselves!) and so on, it was harder to get them on any charges unless the feds spent years and years building a RICO case.

Also, I just remembered a "Super Chicken" episode with the (stereotypical) Chinese laundryman, whose gimmick was that he LITERALLY laundered money with his washing machine for criminals, removing their finger prints. The laundryman then decided to just run off and take the money for himself, since the mobsters couldn't call the police for help.
