I get this and it surely has that effect but otoh these characters and stories are created predominantly by straight folk who're just mostly ignorant and not intentionally malicious. And I feel like if you approach it with a "they're doing dumb shit because they don't educate themselves" rather than a "they're intentionally being shitheads" it changes the dialogue.

Like, don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Weirder than all of them sometimes having pony ears and Twilight and the pegasi having wings, but Twilight and the unicorns not having horns and all of them just having hair extensions that look vaguely tail-like instead of an actual tail? That sort of inconsistency still bugs me about EqG, at least.

I figured it was because all the EqG toys (at least the first ones, dunno about the current toys) used the same mold, so all of them had a slot in their back and the pegasi had detachable wings, but a slot in the forehead for a detachable horn wouldn't have been easily hidden by clothing?

It's the ears. EQGs have human ears in the show but these seem to have kimonomimi ears. Then the way the hair is styled sometimes exaggerates how the human ear is missing from the side of their face. It's accentuated by the fact that they have such prominent jawlines: in humans, the ear sits on top of the hinge of the jaw so that the jaw leads nicely into the ear. In this it's like there's the jawline and the hole in the hair which all leads to the missing space where the ear should be, because the ears are poking up out of the top.
