I just had an (unrelated) conversation with a friend in which she pronounced a couple pearls of wisdom
super tired of hearing '(insert thing) is garbage and here's why'
seemed relevant to the topic of defending against haters (though tbf they're pretty much timeless)maybe let people enjoy things instead of trying to drag them down into whatever shit pit you live in, asshole

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
quite possibly not; as a reaction to the success of hbomberguy's sherlock is garbage video, a lot of *non* hbomberguy videos cropped up with the x is garbage and here's why name style.
including a two hour "steven universe is garbage and here's why" video that youtube won't stop rec'ing me despite me telling it I'm not interested.

Just found out that Fred Patten died today at age 77.
Fred was one of the old-school furries, and is even credited as being one of the founding members of the furry fandom. He was also an anime historian who pushed to help make Japanese animation more mainstream to the American culture.
I corresponded with him a few times; we both wrote about anime for the Cartoon Research website, and Fred even reviewed my comics on Dogpatch Press.
He will be dearly missed

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
(she's a chipmunk but everybody gets that wrong )
e: I went with a chipmunk because they're small and cute and fuzzy and chubby, which is what I'm about, but they feel a little more chill than squirrels and a little more independent than mice and it just seemed like the right fit for the cute soft punk girl vibe I'm going for. Plus as far as I can tell they're a weirdly uncommon choice considering how big Rescue Rangers was for a certain segment of the fandom, and in a way that novelty lets me feel a little more genuine and less like I'm trying to fit into some kind of mold. It does mean everybody will keep assuming "squirrel" at first glance but that's just kind of fun to me I don't mind it.

Ah, my bad
That's a good reason for choosing a chipmunk fursona
Thinking back, yeah it does seem odd that chipmunk fursonas aren't as common. Although in terms of Rescue Rangers fandom, I noticed that Gadget Hackwrench gets a LOT of fanarts...

I probably would've gotten it wrong too but primarily because chipmunk tails are proportionally smaller than squirrel tails and that one reads more like squirrel-tail-size to me vis-a-vis the body

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
It's definitely true that the way the tail curls back is characteristic of a squirrel rather than a chipmunk, that's just something that's been in the design from the beginning and I think it's cute so it's stuck.
You could probably draw her with a shorter tail and have it be pretty cute but I feel like the longer squirrel-y tail is established by now so

Definitely Gadget, I've seen first hand
Similarily, furries who watched "Animaniacs" latched on to Minerva Mink

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
I can only imagine that the reason they're so uncommon is a combination of most people avoiding the smaller species (mice tend to be pretty uncommon as well, for example), and Alvin poisoning the well

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
I'm interested in knowing what species are the most commonly used for furry OCs in the fandom.
The two particular types I see a lot are cat girls and wolf girls. Furries are REALLY into them. Rabbits might be the 3rd most common.

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Tbh when I was picking my sona I remembered Chip & Dale and I was like "okay I can live with that" (I have this long-running vague idea that if I wanted to give her like A Thing beyond just being me I'd make her some kind of P.I. cuz that's an old old indulgence of mine, so the Rescue Rangers thing is sort of apropos). Then a few months later we had an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie in the theater and I was like "oh right fuck."

From here, which is pulling data from the 2016 Furry Survey.
----
Compare against data from 2008:
I'm surprised rabbits didn't get a bit more of a bump from Zootopia.

That's interesting! Wolves and foxes are definitely popular. I'll admit that I kinda lump domesticated cats, tigers, lions under the umbrella "cat" when it comes to furry characters.
Interesting to see that dragons gain more traction as years go by. Is there anything in particular that contributed to that?

Granted, this is just fursonas. Anyone who draws probably has several original characters, to say nothing of how some of them would probably feature way more than others; I'm not sure how you'd even poll for that.

also hey, it means more people who'd be willing/able to draw your character, most likely; I have a hard time sometimes finding folks who like drawing birds

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
I doubt this has as much to do with their size as it does with their cultural connotation. Mice and rats are typically seen as vermin first and foremost. If you're trying to figure out a cartoon animal that'd best represent you, are you going to choose (what you'll likely see as) a pest that gets in your house, eats your food, and leaves poop in your cabinets and closets?
They really do get a bad rap; I know from experience that rats are both very cute and very smart, but the fancy rat isn't exactly the best-known pet even among rodents.

Re: πΊπ½ furry thread 2: reminder the correct pronunciation of gif is "yiff"
Chipmunks are also incredibly small but Autumn's still human-sized. Since Zootopia got mentioned earlier, unless you subscribe to its idea on how much animal-people should vary in size, then I wouldn't expect the normal size of the animal to matter much.
