Speaking of passions I've probably asked this before but anybody have any hot tips on where to find good how to draw nonsense without trawling through the entirety of the internet? I guess I could just go to the library and find a babby's first drawing guide book but I like the non-hassle of just not doing that

I've known how to sort of draw for too long with dreams of being notably better at it that I've almost started to accept it as "this is the best you can do" and I don't want that. that sucks. it's too easy and nonfrustrating especially when I've realized that with putting in the tiniest of effort I can do much better when I want to

I've pretty much failed at everything I've ever attempted, too. I don't really have the mental fortitude to push through the frustration, and in order to build said fortitude I need some sort of success bolstering my self-esteem. A nasty catch-22.

I disagree with this self-assessment, because if you’re still here to be posting with us, that in itself is a major success.

Fortitude isn’t something you just have. It builds up over time, like a mental callus :-I If you tell yourself you need a big success to feel self-esteem, you’ll always be chasing that success and never feeling like you’ve earned it.

But, like... what do? I have no idea what to even do with myself or what to pursue. I've tried a million things, and nothing has really stuck. Can't really build a talent in something you don't enjoy doing to begin with, right? All I have for motivation is wanting to make something someone else enjoys, which makes everything hollow in the end. As you said, just chasing that success with no appreciation or pride for the process.

Eh, this isn't RUSP. I probably shouldn't be dragging my insecurities out all over the fun forums. Sorry. :pinkieshrug:

You know what's wrong with the world and always has been? Everybody ends up romanticizing the period in which they, personally, were children. Because they were sheltered from the garbage going on in the real world, which wouldn't make it into the history books until they were done with school. It's the one period they'll likely go their whole lives knowing the least about.

Everybody in their 20s-30s needs a remedial class on "Why the decade you grew up in sucked." Maybe someone should start a YouTube series.

And speaking of education, Home Ec classes in high school ought to be mandatory, and should be renamed "Adulting."
Every jumbled pile of person has a thinking part that wonders what the part that isn't thinking isn't thinking of...

can you really call it piracy when the first google result is a pdf of the book in question

anyway this looks interesting. I ended up finding another good resource that ought to help too but honestly the realization is kinda hitting me that I should more than ever also stick with just drawing shitty comics and whatnot for fun since I do push myself and I do get better. but having a good theoretical background + forcing myself to learn things like giving drawings proper volume will be a huge boon to that

I once had to rip the DRM out of an Adobe ebook for a course book because for whatever weird reason the school's ebook library decided that book wasn't available anymore at 9pm on a Sunday. I had coursework due based heavily on that book 8.10am the following Monday.

anyway so luckily I still had the DRM'd ebook on my hard drive, since the Adobe reader apparently only deletes those files when you remove an expired book out of your library. I couldn't read it because it wouldn't let me check it out again, but after a little googling and installing some software I committed the seriously cool crime of circumventing copy protection software, turning the ebook file into a bog standard PDF I could then read and spend the night working from. funnily enough Adobe Reader is much better than their ebook reader in a lot of ways so it was actually better that way

Finished right on time at 8am too after some insanely furious typing to get the last assignment done. got an A from that course. anyway that's my story thank you for reading

I was talking to another cartoonist about how big comic strip originals can be. She mentioned how hers are tiny, with me bringing up that I used to draw huge, but then shrunk to what is essentially "medium size" original, I guess. I also mentioned some of the sizes from the originals I own, with 1960s and 1970s strips being about 16 inches wide on average.

This made me wonder how big Charles Schulz drew a "Peanuts" strip, so I looked up an auction listing of an original. A 1955 daily is 5.5x27" big.

Yes, TWENTY SEVEN INCHES WIDE

:starity:

By contrast, I think Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" daily was something like 12 inches wide.

Watterson mentioned soap opera strips being drawn way bigger than his, but Peanuts is definitely a surprise.

And now I have to wonder how big Pogo was, given how crammed with detail it tended to be.

I have a Sunday original from a few years ago that's only 14" wide, so you can see just how much the space has shrunk.

It’s less about the attempts at apologizing (no one is under any obligation to accept an apology or offer forgiveness) and more that I fucked up so hard to ruin all these friendships and such in the first place.

I hate myself for being such a total piece of shit
