Wondering if those fancy vegan burgers that are supposedly indistinguishable from beef are any good right now.

I dunno if I'd say that but I've had a variety of vegan/vegetarian burgers by now and I liked them quite a bit

You know, there's a place three blocks from me that sells them. I could Kickstart a trip to that restaurant and report back.

If I had anything to give, I would totally give to that Kickstarter :-D but if you ever do go, please report back because I’m curious.

I've been thinking of that old comic strip "Dick Tracy". The comic had plenty of villains that became famous, and in certain circles they're as notable as, say. Batman villains.

The kicker? Most of the villains were killed off. Like, for realsies, they would only appear once and never again. This lead to problems later because people loved some of the villains and wanted them back for more. Chester Gould sometimes got around this by introducing a new villain that was the offspring of the original, like Flattop Jr., son of the original Flattop, or having it turned out that they didn't die at all (only to be killed for for real in the second appearance).

One famous aspect of the villains was that they were grotesque and ugly with bizarre designs. Gould didn't want his readers to sympathize with them, so he made them as unattractive as possible. This made them stand out in the process.

(why, yes, Chester Gould was big on "tough on crime", why did you ask? :-I )

Matt Groening said he designed the Simpson family to have unique head/hair shapes, such that if you saw them in silhouette you couldn't mistake them for anyone else, and I guess the Dick Tracy characters are like that too.

---

The Looney Tunes characters have all the speech impediments. Porky Pig stutters, Elmer Fudd has rhotacism, Daffy and Sylvester have lisps, Tweety has various consonant problems, and of course poor Foghorn is Southern. Most of these probably wouldn't fly in the modern day, but the Looney Tunes have been grandfathered into acceptability, I suppose. And maybe it helps that the verbal tics are evenly distributed among all the characters, not just the villains and losers.

As long as it's not offensive, I don't think there's anything wrong with verbal tics in characters' speech. Hell, I'd rather have that than generic bland voice.

It's, as so often, a framing thing. The speech impediments not just being given to villains or "bad" characters (like ones we are obviously supposed to find pathetic) helps, for instance, but it also matters how comedically overblown they are, how the characters with the impediments are treated, and so on. Variety and traits all make your characters interesting, but you gotta afford it some care and respect to please at least the majority - If you don't, it'll just feel like a meanspirited caricature and you deffo won't please anyone who's not lame.

Yeah, and you have to consider it fits with the character. Recently, I had voices recorded of my character for a video. I initially described her voice as being "Sylvester the Cat if she was a girl".

She did some test voices with that in mind and, uh, it didn't fit with the character, so we changed it :v:

Unfortunately it'd be a drink for kids and the tagline would more likely be "Slimy yet satisfying"

I remember being freaked out by how The Brow was killed off, where he was accidentally pushed off the top of the building and impaled by a flag pole underneath.

Not often you see a gruesome death in a newspaper comic :starity:

The Brow, for the record, was a Nazi spy operative. The way he died was an intentional symbolism on the author's part.

At least gruesome deaths stayed a staple of the comic, even in Dick Locher's later years.

And I'm sure I've brought this up before, but the guy doing the writing nowadays is Mike Curtis, a former writer of furry comics and co-founder of furry comic label Shanda Fantasy Arts. Small world.

From the wiki article above I learned that Mike Curtis apparently wrote Dick Tracy fanfiction and I guess that makes sense because if I was looking for somebody to write Dick Tracy I would go to the one person alive who cares enough about Dick Tracy to make fanfics about him

You know those "relatable" tweets about how artists name their files gibberish, so it's something like aaaaaa.psd or sdfas_FINAL3.psd and such?

Yeah, I don't relate to it, because I actually properly name my files like a weirdo :-I And I never use "final" when naming something.

that's not weird, that's sensible and I should finally start doing it so I actually find files again :v:

One thing I oughta do, though, is to create separate folders so I can divide the files by type (whether by the year I created it, etc.). After a while, sifting through hundreds of files get cumbersome, even if I named them properly.

My 3d printer hurt me and does from time to time a hissy fit. I burned myself a little on the heat plate and the nozzle, once it pinched my finger, does fail my prints because it got jammed or the extruder spring lost its tension (that's where the injuries come from).
When it works it works but only if you feed it the right material (not the cheapest one) and use the right settings.
It's like being in an abusive relationship.

I've been browsing r/RetroFuturism lately, and got the distinct feeling that there aren't enough unabashedly ludicrous future predictions anymore, so here's one:

Shopping in the future: You're out with your friends, you decide you want to buy something, so you whip out your phone and order it online. Within minutes, it's delivered directly to your location by drone. The drone is just the last leg of the trip, covering the distance from the nearest teleporter station.

Switch "teleporter station" for "warehouse with stock determined by AI predictions" and you're describing exactly Amazon Prime Air.

I'm thinking about how much I love it when an animation studio, especially the kind that has a set "house style", does something that's completely different from their usual fare.

Case in point, this opening animation to a variety show that aired in Japan. It's pure insanity:

The studio that made this? Ghibli. It's just hard to imagine that company making something completely wacky and cartoony.

I had an impossible burger. The burger was pretty veggie-heavy in the first place, but that said... It really did taste and texture like a regular old burg. If you hadn't told me, I probably wouldn't have known it wasn't beef. Not the finest burg I've ever burged, but darn good.
