Lots of VAs at BroNYCon January 2012

Just thought I should put this here in case anyone's in the NYC area and looking for something to do on January 7.

BroNYCon (which has previously hosted Jayson Thiessen as its Guest of Honor) has lined up Andrea Libman and Nicole Oliver for the panel of guest stars; and just today they sent out an update that they've managed to score Ashleigh Ball too. So that's three VAs and six ponies to ply with questions!

But ... Nerd-Cons at 30 that aren't software or video game related with no clear events, and as much I like the show I wouldn't want to be in a room where VAs get plied with questions.

I don't mean to be insulting, but it's just not my crowd anymore, if it ever once was.


Yeah, a mega-con like SF comic con? Sure.
A longstanding show specific con like Dr Who? Sure.
BroNYCon actually breaking even with ballroom + hotel/flight/transport/food for the guests. Well that's something.

I'm probably going to be going. Some of the team behind the game "The Fiends of Dream Valley" is going to be there and I'm one of the voice actors in the game so I feel like I should be there too since I'm kind of part of the game's team.

Plus, it gives me an excuse to go so I can meet those VAs. I wonder if I bring my Comic-Con pony poster if I can get them to sign it?

I'm a big fan of Ashleigh Ball though, she's a really really good singer and I adore her band's music, that kind of does makes me wish I could go.

You there. I realized I don't have anything for Tara Strong to sign at SacAnime this coming January. I would much love to help someone collect as many autographs as possible for the whole cast since I don't have anything I really need signed by Tara Strong and it doesn't seem like she will be going to BroNYcon (unless she signs up last minute or something).

PM me if you're down for doing this. I will be glad to help if you so want to. I realize that would be cutting it close with shipping (January 7th and SacAnime is the 13-15th) but it'd be after the holidays and even the cheapest shipping cross-country only takes 3-4 days.

Goddamnit and I just recently moved from NY. My old bedroom in my parent's house would've meant free room and board, too. But I have to be in another state for a relative with any free time off I can get over the next few months.

As for the "oh god don't go there the people are horrible" comments, well, duh. It's a con. Cons always have neckbeards, bad cosplays, and people who don't know how to shower. I'm not going there and expecting everyone to look beautiful. But even so, there are going to be 300 people there. They can't all be that bad, right?

Oh hey, this is in New York City? That's about a half hour train ride from me. I think I still have an available train ticket, and I do love going to the city.

Depending on the availability of disposable income at the time of the event, I may end up giving this a chance. Or I'll chicken out at the last minute and go walk around Manhattan for hours on end. I love doing that too.

Probably not. I think that Johnjoseco and his fans keep that as sort of an open secret, though I admit it would give me no small feeling of catharsis for him to have to admit it publicly. Hell, if I recall correctly even Crookedtrees is going to be there, so JJ is definitely not going to be the one with the most skeletons in his closet attending.

Someone needs to call Hasbro or the Hub and tell them about that. I know I won't be able to do what I want but we can at least hurt them by having the people who work on the show refuse to go or forced not to go by their bosses.

Do the show organisers know that Internet Celebrity Slugbox is planning on selling porn at their event?

I know nothing about the crew running BroNYCon, but they've managed to get several big names from the cartoon involved, so I imagine at least one of them has a good head on their shoulders. I would hope that they have not given Slugbox express permission to turn up and be a high-profile mega-creep. Perhaps it would be a good idea to shoot an e-mail to the organisers to notify them that Slugbox intends to peddle porn, that some of their "featured artists" have creepy stuff in their back catalogue, and remind them that there is no way any of this stuff being publicly endorsed benefits BroNYCon or the My Little Pony community at large.

I've got no problem with John Joseco. A lowly fanartist doesn't deserve the same billing as the actual voice actors on the show at a convention, but he is a good artist. Sure, he draws naked humans, but it's just humans and still relatively tasteful. His raciest stuff isn't as bad as Crooked Tree's or Slugbox's tame things, trust me. If anyone sees either of those there and Slugbox selling porn at an event open to kids, I want someone to lay the smack down on them big time. That stuff just ain't right.

For now I think it's best to not talk about the creepy stuff and be excited about the VAs there! I'm excited for anyone who gets to meet them! I'd like to go, but I'm too far away.

You would be surprised at the number of people (including around here) that will defend these people to the bitter end, either because of a belief that nothing can be/should be done about it or that excoriating these people makes you a big meanie. I think it's incredibly irresponsible to let these people around such a high profile event, and I hope people basically picket these people's tables. In summary:

I'm not really that surprised by that I Ran. I've seen so much of it in so many places that eventually stopped bothering me. A year or so on SA with people who agree with me on this kinda thing seems to have completely removed my numbness to gross internet people and their defenders and is increasing my number of freak outs. I'm considering taking a break from the internet entirely one of these days.

I'm not really that surprised by that I Ran. I've seen so much of it in so many places that eventually stopped bothering me. A year or so on SA with people who agree with me on this kinda thing seems to have completely removed my numbness to gross internet people and their defenders and is increasing my number of freak outs. I'm considering taking a break from the internet entirely one of these days.

People seem to forget that just because something isn't surprising (ie creeps showing up to this high-profile event and peddling their crap in the open), doesn't mean that you don't have the right to be upset about it or want it to change. The kind of apathy to even refuse to denounce such things amazes me. If I weren't going to be on the complete opposite end of the country when this will be happening, I would see this as a chance to affect some positive change through some fan activism, maybe turn a few people's heads around to the idea that yeah, maybe this fandom as a whole needs to straighten up and fly right fast before things get even worse.

"Yeah but they do it at animecons" yeah but fuck you. Anime conventions aren't based exclusively off of a TV-show for 5-year old girls, and they aren't advertised with pink ponies, and I know that at least some of them are decent enough to put up a fucking age limit if they're gonna sell porn.

Can you save your outrage until the porn is actually sold at the con? BroNYcon has been a family-friendly event in the past, and the organizers did enforce that. I've seen nothing in that Slugbox's post that suggests he's going to be selling porn in there. He draws non-porn pictures too (rarely, I'll admit). Take it with PurpleTinker or something if you want to ban him from the con altogether. Writing letters to Hasbro seems like a dick move to me.
