You can ask Westy to make you your very own greet, just PM him.

Is there a way to invert the colors for SynIRC? I'd really rather have white letters on black.

You're on a Mac, so I suggest picking up Linkinus on the App store for a measly ten bucks. It's the best Mac IRC client out there.

For a free alternative, I can heavily recommend LimeChat. Been using it for some time now, and it has a few nifty features. Especially if you ever plan on keeping track of multiple rooms and servers. There's also a Windows version but it's entirely in Japanese.

EDIT: Fixed link. Doesn't work with the www. in front of it for some reason.

Also, now that I'm not posting from my phone, here's why it's awesome. It's a single-window design:
Image

That bottom panel shows everything that's happening in the other channels you're currently not viewing, including server messages and stuff. It's also designed to accomodate heavy keyboard use, is fully themeable and runs pretty damn fast. I'm using it on my G4 Powermac(400Mhz) under Tiger and it runs a lot smoother than other IRC clients I've tried on it.

Well, it's fully themeable and it's free rather than costing 20 Euros. With the standard Dark theme I use it's quite pleasant on the eyes.

the channel is on +M (reg'd nicks only) at the moment.

from the OP:

4. Register your nick
Nickserv is an integral bot on many IRC servers. It allows you to bind a username to an e-mail and password. Pretty much, it introduces an ability to ensure everyone that the person with your username is actually you. It's dead easy to register. Just type /nickserv register <password> <e-mail>

Just for reference, I hate accidentally pasting what I have in my clipboard into chat. Not only that, but irssi's config option, "paste_verify_line_count" wasn't doing anything for me, even set at one.

Long story short, there's an option to disable the middle or right-click to paste options in putty. If you use irssi, or any command line IRC client like I do, you should definitely change the option here. (I have mine set on Windows (Middle extends, right menu) now. Mouse can't paste.)

Now I can quit-copy pasting my homework or config files into chat. :v: Sorry about that. :modesty:

I would like to echo this (albeit >1yr after the post). I've always used irssi, but I wanted to try something new to split work irc and personal irc between separate clients. Linkinus is just great; definitely better than Colloquy. In particular it has a great agent architecture "detaching" feature. Best of all, the agent (rather than the software) is tied to Growl. You can close Linkinus, stay connected, and receive Growl notifications. Using screen isn't a pain, but this choice is way more elegant.
:yay:

FYI purchasing through their website is €19.99, but doesn't convert straight across to USD. If you're not adverse to using Apple's app store then you can buy it for $9.99 and save $15ish. I'm not sure what's up with the price delta. They're both the same version (2.4.3 at the moment).

So a minor question: is mIRC the only client that allows you to make a list of your favorite channels on a server? All the others I've found (after running around Wikipedia and google) either don't have a favorites list or have it but automatically connect to all the listed channels (HexChat and PChat, I think). I mean auto-connect ain't a bad thing, but I'd kinda like it if I had a choice what to connect to.

Chatzilla lets you toggle which channels you want to connect automatically to but you need Firefox to use it :pinkieshrug:

Opera's IRC client actually does allow that exact thing as well, but I was aiming to have a client seperate from my browser. It's happend way to many times in mibbit that I'd press something as simple as the space bar and it would load up an image someone posted in IRC and I'd have to reconnect to the channel. Though I'd guess Opera would have safeguards against that.

I guess it would be the best to just use Opera, instead of complicating things. :pinkieshrug:

Irssi allows you to set both channels and servers as auto join. It's also one of the best IRC-clients out there.

I've never had it open a link in the same tab (Firefox). I still have it do image previews to avoid trap pictures or stupidly clicking greets, but to my knowledge it doesn't open in the same page.

I think opening in the same page is a requirement for XHTML 1 compliance or something weird like that.
