My favorite characters tend to be charge characters, even though I am complete ass with them((I flub button inputs A LOT, and charge characters are VERY finicky)). From a pure fighting game standpoint, I would have to say my favorite character is Guile ((And by that same vein, Charlie))

ImageImage

Just look at the dude! Now that there is a true AMERICAN! :jingo: He also has like, some of the best theme music ever. In fact, all my favorite characters tend to have awesome music tracks as their themes. Guile, Charlie, and Vega are all at the top of my favorite Street Fighter character list, and they have amazing themes.

Now, if we were to include characters not native to fighting games, well... I have been one of the people who was backing the inclusion of Phoenix Wright into UMvC3 since it was announced. I am a -BIG- Ace Attorney fan, and I am still annoyed that AAI2 isnt coming to an English speaking country. While Phoenix Wright might not be that great of a character competitive-wise, I believe they captured the character well, and he is my point character in that game. He is the only character in the game to have TWO ((once again, completely awesome)) themes, and his Level 3 Hyper? Well... just see for yourself...

For those who may not recognize it, that is a full screen, 0-frame hyper that does 600K damage. That means it hits everywhere instantly for at least a half lifebar of damage (depending on character). Of course, getting to the right mode where you have access to that hyper is hard, and that mode has a limited amount of time before you're forced back to square 1.

Too bad Phoenix Wright is absolutely awful in mvc3. He had something going for him when he still had an invincible assist, but as he is right now, he sucks really bad. No mobility, no range on his moves, no mixups, relies on a random mechanic, etc. I was really hoping he would be pretty good, but alas this wasn't the case.

Favorite fighting game character? Wolverine is a lot of fun. So is is Akuma in SF4 and Captain Falcon in Melee (fuck Brawl).

Honestly, while I'm still hoping for Spike to be in as playable, (If we could have a Zangief-style Buffspike, that'd be the best thing) I'd probably end up maining Pinkie if he doesn't. I've always loved charge characters, and I've actually won a small tournament once with Blanka alone. Just sit back, watch what people do, roll, put in a few of his sliding hard punches, boom.

As for myself, I play a TON of fighting games, but my issue is that I'm not especially great at them. Most of them I need a moves list with me to get anywhere. That, and... I'm not going to lie most fighting games this generation have some sort of issue that bugs me. Street Fighter 4 is too defenisve, and it's too focused on blocking and punishing. BlazBlue is better for that, but I hate how everybody has some weird gimmick so you can't just pick somebody and start messing around with them. Marvel's all right, although I still don't have Ultimate, and I'm not even really sure if I WANT it.

While we're all on the subject of other fighting games, am I the only one around here who's into MK? By that I mean, the newest one, not the others. It honestly makes me kind of sad that it's mostly ignored by the "professional" fighting game community, because it's decently balanced, easy to pick up on, and there's some interesting character designs in there. Sure, the blood and gore means that it's obviously not going to be a game for the majority of the people in this thread, but bah, there's no law against liking happy cartoon ponies AND a man dragging people through a buzzsaw hat crotch first.

...Right? :fluttersmith:

Also, if we're getting into favorite fighting game characters, probably Talbain from Darkstalkers. Has a crazy eight-way dash move (that would work great with Rainbow Dash, now that I think about it), is INCREDIBLY fast, has a flash kick that doesn't even NEED to charge... plus, he's a werewolf with nunchucks. How do you not love that?

Sorry, but MK9 was hella boring to watch and no one in the pro fighting game community really liked it.

KUNG LAO MIRROR MATCH!

THEY SPINNIN'!

Also the ridiculous bomb trap combo that Cyrax had was pretty dumb.

Not to mention Smoke's setup, or Kabal's ridiculous zoning...

MK9's badly balanced, lacks depth, and is generally kinda bland. And combos where you are mostly literally linking the same normal into itself repeatedly are not fun to watch or do.
And violence is fine, but violence for the sake of violence is dumb. :pinkieshrug: I don't really wanna freeze someone organ's, rip them out and shatter them in my hands.

Honestly? I'd say that MK9's probably more balanced than SF4. I'd mostly say that was due to the fact that their last is a little more 'even' compared to a lot of fighting games I've seen. I mean, sure, I know tiers aren't the end all be all opinion of balance in fighting games, I just appreciate that it's a little more even than most. And honestly, from the start, I'd say it was unbalanced, sure, but with all the patches they've made, especially to Kung Lao, it's been much improved.

That, and I really liked the way the combo system worked. In Street Fighter, you basically have to hit a button in literally 1/60th of a second to put a punch after another punch, while in MK, it was a lot smoother, so you had a lot more room to experiment. I tend to prefer fighting games where combos are more freeflowing, like, say, Guilty Gear, so that's a plus for me.

Also, maybe this is just my personal opinion, but I'm not really seeing where the 'bland' is coming from. I will admit some of the character designs, particularly the female characters are... well, embarassing, not going to lie, but they're not any worse than say, Mai. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the anime style a lot of fighting games tend to use, but that's only my opinion!

I still see your point about the violence, and that's totally cool if that's not your thing! I'm just weird like that because it doesn't bother me, I guess.

Sorry if I come off as too defensive or something. I have good taste in fighting games! Really! I promise.

...So... how about that Skullgirls? Hoping for a PC port, we NEED more fighting games on Steam that aren't from Capcom. Fuck Capcom, seriously.

Thanks for the help! I've changed what I needed to and added in "damage scaling" so people can look that up if they're confused when reading about a "reset," as well as referring to damage scaling in that definition.

I want to chime in and say that Mortal Kombat looked like it was going somewhere good too, but I hear about all the horrible exploits and imbalanced characters like Kung Lao. Mortal Kombat's ULTRA-VIOLENCE schtick aside, I think everything looks like a smooth fighter and the imbalances they didn't catch are just too big for people to continue competing with that game seriously. One game that suffered the same fate was the Fist of the North Star one developed by Arc System Works. It was beautiful and having my favorite anime series get serviced by the best 2D fighting game animators was more than I could ask for, but I think some of the imbalanced things stemmed from the fact that they cared more about putting in storyline-accurate attacks and eccentricities. It's still beautiful to watch non-Raoh matches.

Yep, from their FAQ:

Added a few things to my fighting term glossary, mostly for the alternate terms section (such as number pad inputs and SF2's strength naming scheme).

One thing I thought was important to add that might be obvious is "punish." I don't know if it's because I'm an oldie at fighting games and have a more sensitive eye for it or not, but I feel like many players don't learn when they have a perfectly good chance to punish in front of their eyes. It does take a bit of work to learn what whiffed moves can or can't be punished for each different character, but it's always one of the first things I learn when playing a different fighter. One of the more dependable punishes is to simply trip people (down + HK), and I expect it many many times when I screw up, but people simply flounder. While that's a good thing for me, it bothers me MORE that I wasn't punished for a mistake and it makes me dissatisfied if I win by a tiny margin in the end because it's like I got away with a technicality. Don't know if this bothers others as much as it does for me, but that's why I thought to put it in there.

e: In case you're wondering, no, there's no new updates from the development team. I want this game now.

e2: In case anyone wanted to see what little action was shown of Fluttershy in that last stream, here's the cut for it on Youtube. Includes both the times she was shown to 1-hit KO Pinkie and the mirror staredown at the end:

So an update on the site. Essentially the development team is going to be showing up at a convention in Strongsville, Ohio from September 28th-30th this year.

This can mean a number of things. Either they know the game is definitely not going to be done by then, or it can be that they'll be there to show off the next non-main-six content and maybe hold tournaments or something. I want to bet on the former because I'm estimating the game to be done winter this year still.

I love glitch videos like this. The only downside is that every time they release even the most minor video preview, I want to play the game that much more.

What I'm only just now noticing in that video, though, is that some of these animations look really good. I mean, they look too good. When Pinkie/Surprise is doing her little trot-in-place, I swear I asked myself, "did they switch to 3D models for some reason?" I don't know how they do it. Magic, I assume.
