I use a rotating set of very subtle pony wallpapers by some guy named ooklah. I purposely chose the most unremarkable ones so I can use them without people knowing. They're all on bronibooru under the tags "wallpaper" and "ooklah".

Er, right.
1680x1050 is a 16:10 ratio, which matches up with my 1920x1200 gallery.

As far as I know, any method you could possibly use for displaying your wallpaper is smart enough to resize correctly when using the correct aspect ratio. :ponydrugs:

Currently it's this, mainly because I stay up late using the computer and hate having bright images in my face just before bed:

I've heard there's an app that cycles your wallpapers based on the time of day rather than at random, which I would love to have, but I've forgotten what it's called.

Okay, well, I'm really just using it because it was on bronibooru, matched my resolution and it was jpeg formatted, because I'm too lazy to convert png files to bypass the automatic compression Windows 7 does.

The what now? Most of the wallpaper in my cycle folder is PNG formatted, I'm not seeing anything odd with it...? :pinkieshrug:

When you set your wallpaper, Windows 7 actually makes a copy of the file at "[%osdrive%]:\users\%user%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\themes\transcodedwallpaper.jpg"
The means by which this conversion is done isn't a very clean one, so if you look closely at PNG conversions and the like, you'll see artifacts. They're not necessarily glaring, unless you have someone like Rainbow Dash on your desktop, for instance, where the reds in her hair are horribly crushed.

Time to open up Irfanview and batch-process 600 PNGs into lossless JPEGs, then.

Does Windows even natively support lossless JPEG? You could also try this workaround.

Save your images as a bitmap, aka .bmp and then rename to .jpg so the file itself is actually a bitmap but it gets passed to the OS as a jpeg, so it thinks it doesn't have to compress it, and the native reader interprets bitmaps.

How do you even get Irfanview to output lossless JPG, anyway? I've been using it for years and I've never noticed that was an option. Anyway, I know you can also get around this issue by opening your image in Internet Explorer, and setting it as your wallpaper from there. It looks like that just copies it as a bitmap with no compression.

Renaming your BMPs and JPGs definitely seems to do the trick though. Thanks for that! Now I can use a rotating wallpaper again if I feel like it.

Back on topic, I found this wallpaper on Bronibooru, and I've been using it on my phone (which uses a 640x480 wallpaper). It aligns nicely so that I don't have to cover up any of the faces with icons, and when I'm bored I can just scroll back and forth looking at ponies.

And this is the one I use on my netbook. I always have some program or another occupying the screen when I'm doing stuff, but it's a nice image to start the day with.

And for my logon screen I use this one that I'm too lazy to upload to imgur.

When batch converting, it's one of the filetype options. Just drag the slider all the way to the right.

EDIT: Confirming that it does. Compared the transcoded wallpaper when I selected one as a PNG and then selected it as the lossless JPG conversion -- no more artifacting.

Hey, me too! I was just about to post them. Before those I had a different set of cutie marks on random rotation. A new cutie mark every five minutes. :pinkietoot:

I'm a big fan of minimalist or simple designs like those for wallpapers. I also like the collection derplight has here on the booru. They're certainly less subtle about sharing your love for ponies, but they're still simple and crisp designs. I'll probably have the ones that look like these in a rotation next when I get tired of the splatter marks.

I discovered a good while ago that if you set something as your wallpaper in Firefox, it somehow bypasses the compression, so I just always do that.

Also Derplight's wallpapers are aweseome. And thorough — I've never seen a Screwball wallpaper before, much less a good one! And as an added bonus, with the right cropping, they work as mobile wallpapers pretty well too.

The source is an 8000x4500 PNG. Because, apparently, high resolution raster storage of vector images is preferable to vector storage of vector images. :pinkieshrug:

What you're probably seeing is scaling blur, and due to the nature of people being ass-backwards about the concept of raster/vector, will require manual fixing, provided of course the person doing the fixing decides that that barely-noticeable blur is even worth it...
Like hell is it a result of the format it's stored in.
(Disclaimer: The passive-aggression of this post is directed at the genius that decided that high resolution PNGs were perfectly valid forms of distribution for vector images... which would be exactly none of you, I should think)

I'm sorry to say that whatever method you're using is not lossless.

I seem to remember hearing that this is an imgur issue, it automatically compresses uploaded JPEGs even if they're below the file size limit. I forget what the recommended alternative site was though. :pinkieshrug:

I have a lot (currently 376) on random rotation, but I really like stinkehund's work (including the wallpaper version of Vitruvian Mare). There's also tsitra360's stuff (especially this one). Also use this for my Win8CP lock screen.

I made these a while ago, if you just want something simple. iPhone 4 resolution, so it'll probably be fine on whatever you have unless the aspect ratio is really weird.
