I was also expecting them to get some dirt on Diamond Tiara. But I'm glad they didn't because that wouldn't be a good way to teach the lesson.

But man, this episode was so great.

Spike at the spa was interesting. In the 3rd episode of the series he wouldn't be caught dead at these girly get-togethers. But after nearly fifty episodes he decided "fuck it" and joined in.

(and him pulling that cucumber slice out of Rainbow's mouth was squicky)

I thought for awhile that the Sweetie / Rarity dynamic would be a primary focus / bridge between Gabby Gums and Ponyville, but it didn't quite get that much focus. Still, Rarity going from being fine about gossip, even about the other Mane 6, to super mad in a heartbeat, while completely understandable and greatly acted, was a bit :starity:. All of the adult ponies getting caught up in the yellow journalism - with only Twilight catching on early what could happen - was a bit dumb. :pinkieshrug:

It was also a bit annoying that the CMC were feeling like this would be their last chance to get their marks. This went away in Acts II-III as the episode got rolling (and actually the Rarity confrontation in Act III was pretty good at addressing how much their crusading is worth). But Act I definitely was slow, partially thanks to that.

One other gag I liked: in the Twilight story, that anonymous source was very... well-done. Except exactly the opposite. :-/ :gotcha:

So cutie marks are only present in a pony's fur.

What does this mean about the magic that causes cutie marks?

Fluttershy tail extensions and the Big Macintosh/Applejack role reversal were highlights. :yay:

Bunch of other things too. I'll have to do another post when I see the 720p version, lots of good jokes and puns though. Goody two horseshoes should have been goody four horseshoes though. :pinkieshrug:

The important thing about that episode is that Princess Celestia likes cake. :gotcha:

Trixie being mentioned was pretty outta nowhere!

I wonder what the paper was like with Namby Pamby at the wheel?

Old gray mayor not actually being gray at all is wonderful though. :pinkietoot:

Act 2 was great, the rest... not so great. But ok episode.

Interesting that we almost never get on-screen interaction between Spike and CMC, and here we learn that they're apparently buddies with him (though also off-screen).

I was thinking that it was Rarity who revealed to others who Gabby Gums was, but I'm wondering if it was actually Spike who spread the news.

I like to think that the real reason he was mad was because they didn't publish his interview. It's something he would do.

Nice episode, probably the best of the "CMC try to get their cutie marks" variety. Particularly picked up in the middle with the news stories and subsequent freakouts. Tabitha went all out.

The ending was fine, but...a little too "wrap it up", maybe? A part of me kinda wanted the "print something about Diamond Tiara" path, but this is probably a better lesson. :smirk:

Not an all-time favorite but a good episode.

All in all, a good episode. It really picked up when the mane 6 arrived. I loved all their antics, especially the AJ/Big Mac role reversal, Pinkie's "I do have a problem!", everything with Fluttershy and Angel, etc.

EPISODE DELIVERED. :iamapony:

(I'm very much in favor of them not going the "publish dirt on DT" route, because not only would that be a terrible message for them to teach, but it would depend on there being some convenient gossip for them to use for that purpose. Remember how everyone went all :rariwhat: at Pinkie just happening to find Matilda living in Ponyville the whole time?)

Bit of a new kind of story for Larson, but I think this shows he can do slice-of-life juuuust fine. And boy does he like his injokes and sci-fi gags. :gotcha: He's been just a bulldozer this season.

Yeah, that was pretty "...wut. :starity: "

Anyway, I found this an amusing ep. I totally smiled at the reversed roles, and the gossip columns and responses to them were great too. :yay:

Also, fatkid is getting quite some screentime. I wonder if he's, like, the new pet pony of the animators or something. (Not literally, of course.)

It's an old gag: Fez + Pipe + Smoking Jacket + The Daily News + Optional Snifter of Brandy = High Class Gentleman.

So how long do you guys reckon until someone sets up a Gabby Gums tumblr?

And yeah, I was also expecting them to get back at Diamond Tiara by putting some kind of story about her in there. But then again it makes sense that they didn't. Not just because it would run counter to the moral they were trying to impart, but because it would have been the obvious way to wrap things up in any other cartoon with an episode like this. And this show loves to avert doing the obvious when it can.

Oh it's pretty clear there's a good few Who fans on this staff. Doctor-pony first showed up with brown mane and stuff, later...same cutie mark, little longer mane, bow tie, and stetson. If I'm not totally imagining that. I also think he had a background fez shot. The whole time travel episode reeked of Who plot.

Then again, I'm probably reading too far into it and I'm too big a Doctor Who fanboy.

This episode, so fun. :ponydrugs: Diamond Tiara is magnificent and Rarity remains awesome.

- Sorry to everyone who hoped this would be a Scootch episode and was disappointed. Maybe next time. She still had some good moments, though.

- Just for a second, I wondered if "Featherweight" would turn out to be Fatkid.

- Diamond Tiara didn't make Silver Spoon work on the paper with her! They're not completely joined at the flank. I like that SS gets a bit of differentation; she's probably a decent pony outside of DT's influence.

- Loved all the continuity references, all woven in really well without derailing the scene.

- Snips and Snails mention "our mothers", so they aren't siblings.

- :vogue: "Gum on their bum! Teeheeheeheehee!"

- Why are the Cakes shopping at the joke store? And will we ever find out who owns the place?

- Have we ever seen a full exterior shot of the spa before?

- All the visual gags inside the spa are fantastic, including Pinkie keeping her newspaper underwater. :cheese:

- A well-placed scaly source? :psygum:

- This episode has a lot of ponies handling paper, which means a lot of "hooves are not hands" rule bendage and breakage, but that's maybe unavoidable in this case. We did see more of the pencil-in-mouth gag, though.

- I can't even imagine what they found to publish about Berry Punch. :memories:

I was gonna say, this episode was hoofhands central.

Not too sure how they could have avoided it, though. It seems pretty clear they're still trying to avoid it as much as they can get away with (and we know Jayson is definitely cognizant of it, since he brings it up in every interview). It's not just that they're getting lazy about it.

That was a pretty solid episode! Probably my favorite CMC episode of the season. I like how they're trying to fit in a little more representation of male ponies (or foals in this case) into the episodes as this series progresses. I also thought that the lesson being given as an open apology was a nice touch, like a lot of others have said.

My personal highlights:

-Spa scene
-Dash making it rain on Gabby Gums
-Big Mac speech :awesomedash:
-That photo of Celestia eating cake. :gotcha:
-That mysterious new age music during the spa scene.

If possible I would like to get an avatar of Dash angrily stomping out rain during the apology scene, that made me laugh way too hard.
