Overall it was a pretty decent episode. At first I was like "UGGGGGGH CUTIE MARK WHINING" but they made it pretty fun and interesting and less about cutie mark whining.

Alright then! No Celesta-tier ep, so I won't go super crazy, but probably a decent amount still coming. :flattered:

Here is the full album, I'll skip some images here and there to capture here, so check that out for the full thing as I go.

Image

Oh, so Silver Spoon was on screen for a bit, at least. Also, golden bow & arrow cutie mark.

Image

I don't know why this is rated TV Y either, Scoots. Clearly it's at least PG, I mean last week was depression city. :rainbert:

Image

No wonder we called him Featherwing at first. :smirk:

Image

So F is flipped vertically, FREE is backwards completely, and it says "PRISS" with some backwards. Whatever man I'll go with it :crack:

Image

Checking their marks as soon as they're done with one box. Silly CMC, Derpy already has bubble wrapping covered! Also, I wonder where that vase is going?

Image

Slight Winter Wrap Up callback here.

Image

:nngh: : I've done this way too much already man

Image

Pinkie Pie approves of the impossible newspaper boat.

Image

Down you go.

Image

CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS MUDDY NEWSPAPER DECORATIONS YAY (I dunno)

Image

Whoah whoah whoah whoah... A Rainbow Dash animal pony balloon. :awesomedash: :wantitneedit: :flattered:

Image

Sweetie is not amused. :ohboy:

This episode had many laughs. Just the way Rarity says "Gum on their bum" in a giddy tone, it actually broke my silence. The gags in this episode really show that the writers are having so much fun with the story. I do wonder if they were planning ahead with Big Mac taking the smarty pants doll in lesson zero, or if it was just an opportunity that presented itself to the writer?

They leave it unconfirmed how true these pieces of gossip are, which leaves us with a few questions. How much does Celestia like her cake? Is Fluttershy's tail length natural? What are Trixie's secrets? Perhaps these were all just lies to sell papers, but perhaps not. Now I can only wonder if they're planning something. Maybe Trixie makes a reappearance? Maybe there's an upcoming gag where it looks like Fluttershy is being pinned down by the end of her tail, only for the end to fall off...

Also, this face.

Another thing. I like how Sweetie Belle twangs Rarity's horn, and that disrupts the levitation she's performing on Sweetie Belle's saddle bag. It's just a little gag/detail about unicorns that's pretty neat.

I'd definitely put money on nothing in this episode showing up as continuity later. All the injoke gags felt like the writer just having a damn ball pulling together as many silly backreferences as he could think of.

But Fluttershy acting all guilty (and then heartbroken :fluttersmith:) about the tail extensions thing... Yeah, I'm gonna go with true. :modesty:

Check out that poster above the Dashballoon. I am pretty sure there's a wallpaper someone did that's just like that. Of course, all the Dash fan paraphernalia in the Crusader treehouse is a big callback to MMDW.

Here's the closest I could find to that wallpaper- there's no stars, but it's close:

Way better episode than I expected. Fillies were cute, gags were funny.
Complaints:
-I have never cringed so hard as when that filly said "LITERALLY!". Oh god it just drives me up the wall when people say it like that.
-It got a little generic in the middle and at the end. Even kids could have seen some of it coming a mile away.

Best stuff:
- :smirk: / :nngh: on a paper boat. Mind meltingly cute.
-The fact that they were being blackmailed into working really helped this episode feel less like a generic "kids learn a lesson about gossip" cartoon. Well done, writers.
- :smug: reference! Never would have called that!
-Big Mac, still keeping Smarty Pants, plus his devastating speech at the end. That voice.
-Flutter's first reaction to 'tail extensions'. Dear god that was funny.
-Pretty much everything else

That's most likely supposed to be a nuan cat reference, or however it's spelled. It's been in the beginning of MMDW too, though the balloon is new.

Scoots got totally shafted yet again, but she continues to be adorable so whatevs?? Her wings flitting about never ceases to be cute as heck. Sweetie's really taken up one hell of a leadership role between the three of them.

Also, Big Mac just completely layed into the CMC, goddamn. That was brutal.

Are they painting Twilight's hooves to be Twilight coloured? Are pony hooves not naturally the colour of the pony's coat?

Another detail is that Featherweight snaps a picture of Diamond Tiara blackmailing the CMC. As in, he takes a shot of her in front of the CMC while the incriminating pictures are there on the floor. I wonder if he got promoted to Editor in Chief by telling Cherilee about this, and showing his evidence...

...That Featherweight is one sly little colt. Also, I can't wait until I see a version with high enough quality for me to be able to discern Featherweight's cutie mark.

Good episode. Everyone's hit just about all the points I was gonna make after first watch. Rarity's "gum on their bum" line, AJ and BM's role reversal, Fatkid's lines (BTW is it me or does his "Yaaaay?" line sound like a different VA than the rest of his lines?), the dozens of callbacks, etc. All good.

I could swear to god, Merriwether Williams MUST be doing something in every episode or something... I swear, the visual gags are getting closer and closer to Spongebob-level antics. I doubt there's any animation staff crossovers between the two, but it's worth looking.

What I find rather interesting is how the adults treat the kids here: as adults. Sort of. As equals, at least. Big Mac gives them that what-for speech, Rarity gives SB a lecture grounded in logic and reason and example (and acknowledges her own hypocrisy, which is neat), Twilight "solves" the problem by basically setting up a trap against them, and Rainbow Dash makes it fucking rain on them. Repeatedly. I'm sorry, I love the idea of RD holding such a spiteful grudge against a gang of kids that she hauls off and carries out a physical vendetta against them. But in all these cases they kinda deal with the CMCs as though on the same maturity level as they are themselves.

Well, the ending surprised me. I was predicting that they would decide to cop it on the chin and run those embarrassing photos of themselves because it's only fair, but as a typical Gabby Gums column. Suddenly Diamond Tiara is denied her revenge and she still has to come up with an excuse for why Gabby Gums is missing from the paper the next issue, and nopony besides Rarity and her friends ever have to know who Gabby Gums really was. Which brings up the question of who's the big hypocrite who blabbed Gabby Gums' identity to the rest of the town anyway?

Dragongem wrote:I'm really sad I didn't get to hear Trixie's secrets :smug:

Well, we know at least one secret about her: She's apparently still around and doing shows, somewhere, contrary to rumors that she became homeless after the incident with the ursa and is living in the woods subsisting on pinecones or however the popular fanon goes.

Well, she's involved in the initial story meetings with the other writers, right? Maybe she pitches gags before the screenplay ever gets written. There's something no one's ever asked in an interview — exactly how the writing process actually goes down.

Like the main cast, I think the girls are somewhat age-flexible in their treatment by the writers, the high side in their case being proably somwhere around maybe middle school age or so. That being the case, I don't think it's really so unusual to start treating them somewhat as adults in some respects.

Davy, no! I will be sad if you get rid of Pinkie bounce!

And yeah, total points for Big Mac switching speaking roles with an angry eeyup-nope Applejack. Him and Fluttershy have delivered the harshest lines ever, whooo-wee.

And like some people and I were discussing, I thought the end would have turned out different with the CMC either publishing something revealing about Diamond Tiara to get her to stop demanding Gabby Gums or that they'll just bit the bullet and let their embarrassing things get published. I know smearing Diamond Tiara back isn't the best thing to teach kids, but I don't think it's really teaching the lesson of "get revenge" because DT wasn't the one writing the articles and was just an irresponsible bigwig who just cared about ratings no matter what the cost. I thought it would've been cool to teach that the higher ups who don't have to deal with their fallout aren't untouchable

Probably because it looks kind of weird, judging by some fan art I've seen drawn that way. It works fine on the Cake twins, but Apple Bloom's eyes are this scary fiery red-orange color that really stands out when you take away the pupils. :starity:

Love the high res screencaps as I merely caught a 360p youtube version. (Which beats what is happening to other shows on youtube. Spammers for offsite video sites are basically overloading the Tube now. Dozens of accounts all leading to the same place. Putting up episodes to share in hopes people will buy the DVD or merch is one thing. Trying to send people off the Tube to some for profit site that almost certainly is copyright infringing? NOT COOL.)

I didn't even notice Balloon Dash or Nyan Dash when watching it. BLU RAYS HASBRO WHERE ARE THEY? I WANT TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY.

The derpin rolls, and the lightning strikes!
Another muffin grows cold on an Equestrian night!
As the storm goes on out of control,
deep in her heart the derpin rolls!
