Minecraft thread (punching trees)

Post by Westy543 (?) » Sun Apr 01, 2012 1:10 pm

So I figured I'd make a general post for Minecraft discussion, not solely limited to Gnintendo's server. So what's all the fuss about?

It's an internet blocks game that sort of mixes legoes ( :v: ) and The Legend of Zelda together into one thing. It's highly building oriented, and there's lots to do. You can mine, mine, and even... mine! No just kidding, there's more than that. You can build weapons and armor, find villages, setup farms, herd animals, fight zombies and suicidal exploding bushmen, etc. It's a lot of fun to play together, so I'm gonna have drunkill merge in the other thread about the game. It costs roughly $35 now, and it is very very moddable. You can play a free internet block stacking version that is literally pre-alpha at http://minecraft.net. If you've played Terraria, it's similar with a higher emphasis on building than adventure. Also 3D.

Okay hey here's some things on mods I was asked to put in here:

--------------------------------------------------------------
So a lot of people ask me "What texture pack are you using?" "Woah that's cool, how did you get x?" etc - so here's this.

John Smith Texture Pack
Some screenshots:
Image

Image

Minecraft forums post: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/267 ... ustomizer/

This texture pack gives the game a very classic RPG look and feel. I like it a lot, especially its water texture. Total overhaul. It has a customizer depending on how recently it was updated. It needs MCPatcher to patch in HD textures & fonts (it has its own custom font! Cool!) which you can get in the above forum post (just download it, hit "patch" and drop your texture pack into the folder), or Optifine (see below).

Sphax PureBDCraft

I don't have that many good screenshots, but here are a few.

Their site: http://bdcraft.net/

Optifine
This is literally the best mod.
So this mod is basically the best thing. No really, I cannot say enough how much I love this mod. Notch was going to have it included in stock Minecraft, but he couldn't coordinate a proper payment for the modders' work. As such, it's still standalone and readily updated for each and every patch.

Um, cool. What's it do?
Glad you asked! Optifine, as its name suggests, highly optimizes Minecraft, and adds cool new HD features too at minimal graphics cost. I went form ~30-60 FPS to ~180-240, with turning its HD features on. One example is its ability to connect some textures of blocks, like merging glasses blocks and panes into giant single windows!
Image

Or its EXTREME view range (512 blocks Image tends to have probs in SMP )
Image
You can do things like toggle fog, improve how grass looks on hills, toggle murky water underwater (this is really nice), changing the clouds' level, and a billion other things that can be controlled in your options menu. As a sick bonus you can change texture packs from ingame with it. Wow! Not to mention it gives you a sniper mode you can activate with left control.

Here's the forum link, I use MagicLauncher to launch this. Note that while this is the easiest route, it doesn't play nice with GLSS shaders in case you want to use those. I run the multicore version, it can be a little glitchy so if your game starts derping out, check their FAQ. Otherwise "Smooth" should be good for most people.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249 ... -textures/

MagicLauncher
This will replace your standard way of launching Minecraft. If you hit "setup," you'll see the screen below where you can add mod .zips. I make a folder in %appdata%\.minecraft\mods\version (ie \1.2.5\) to keep track of them all in. It's a really nice way to launch Minecraft because it reduces mod conflicts on launch, and just disables one that would break your game (usually).
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/939 ... ions-news/
Image

Rei's Minimap
Yeah so this pretty much rocks. It adds a customizable minimap to your HUD, but get this - you can even set world waypoints that save based on server / world. So you can make a waypoint to your friend's house, and then wander back off to your place, and the minimap marker is there in case you get lost. It's pretty slick.

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/482 ... ap-v30-04/

Mine Little Pony
Even if you don't want to be a pony, I somewhat suggest this mod so you at least see people with pony skins correctly. First off, here's the forum topic. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/748 ... -pony-v08/

This mod is entirely client side and a visual mod. You do not gain the ability to fly, grow more food, or teleport with it. Unicorns float items in front of them instead of holding them with their hooves, and pegasi flap their wings when they are in water, jumping, or standing on a fencepost. Here's an old screenshot of me testing it.
Image

Image

Image

Now, when you install the mod, it will create a .settings file in %appdata%\.minecraft\mods\MineLittlePony\ which you need to open up with Notepad, and change the bottom "PonyLevel=2" to "PonyLevel=1" - you need to do this or people with human skins don't look right. It's default because apparently everyone should be a pony or something. PonyLevel=2 forces pony models, PonyLevel=0 turns the mod off.

Like so:
Image

So that's pretty much what I use. I thought I'd open this thread up for mod recommendations, help requests, etc. - if you need help, throw me a line and I'll see what I can do. If in doubt, delete your META-INF folder in your minecraft.jar.

I play this game way too much. :allears:

I've been meaning to beat Hardcore mode for some time now, but I keep getting sidetracked by game updates, multiplayer shenanigans, other games, ponies, and the occasional non-nerd interest.

I have a multiplayer world from almost 2 years ago that some friends and I have been using as free-build between survival worlds. (which usually get deleted for missing worldgen features) It's only been active on certain occasions but we've amassed a number of interesting builds there. I'll take/post screenshots sometime after 1.2.5 goes official.

I do have this one shot of a friend and I playing Tetris though:

Westy543 wrote:and it is very very moddable.

This is worth emphasizing. The game is written in java, which makes it much easier to mod than most games, and there are some incredible mods out there. It's got one of the biggest, most active mod communities you will ever find, to the point where some things done in mods(the better save system, better lighting, pistons) have actually been incorporated into the game by the creators.
Here's a few examples:
Mo' Creatures is an especially popular one. It adds a load of new animals and monsters to the game. Scorpions, rats, ogres, deer, whatever.

These next three are shader mods-they alter the way the game is rendered.

And this one is especially neat to watch.

And more recently, this one, with shields and duel wielding, which I really do just think should be in the vanilla game.

Not so much the new weapons, but just the duel wielding would be so useful in so many situations, like not having to switch to torches when mining.
Just... just look at 4:06! aaaaaa so good.

I've been thinking about dabbling in some modding myself. Nothing that messes with the procedural generation, because I am nowhere near that skilled, just new craftable items. So far the things I'd like to try to make are:
  • Liquid rainbow — a new fluid that looks and behaves like the rainbow juice in My Little Pony. So basically a second type of water with a different skin. Should be easy enough, though getting it to use a texture longer than one block, as I would like to do, might be impossible in the engine.
  • Sideways logs — for those who want to build log cabins.
  • Book forts! — basically a block made entirely out of books. Because who doesn't want to build a fortress of knowledge? I would also modify enchanting tables to accept them as alternative to bookcases.
  • Additional dye colors — for the artistes among us. I've heard it's not doable since Minecraft uses damage values to determine the color of wool and cloth, but diamond armor can have damage value ranges of over 1000, so we'll just see for ourselves.

Minecraft is great because you can just work on a little building and have fun, or make a grand sky castle and have just as much fun. Or if you really want to, you can go delving into the earth, fighting monsters, exploring caves, and putting paintings everywhere in your mines to make them more homey. :allears:

My minecraft server that I've run for my friends has pretty much everything I've done in Minecraft on it, way back to when the only multiplayer was creative, thanks to a minecraft editor letting me import creative server maps, and multiworld functionality provided by the server mod Bukkit and a server plugin, Multiverse.

(The update that increased the height of worlds sure made it take a long time to start up the server for the first time because of converting the world files let me tell you.)

So according to Jeb, in the future you'll be able to open up your world to LAN without setting up a server.

I hope they tweak the lighting system so that shadow levels decrease depending on the distance between an object and what's under it. It kind of defeats the purpose of having floating buildings when everything below them is plunged into complete darkness and uninhabitable. Especially when the building is above the clouds and barely even visible due to a combination of draw distance and perspective.

I got this game gifted to me once by a friend, and I really enjoyed it since then. Though, sadly, on my own computer it lags like crazy, so combat is pretty much impossible, but at grandma's comp it runs decently, so I'm planning to beat the game on there. Started collecting diamonds using the y 15 trick, but don't have enough yet for a full set. Still enjoying myself, though. Might start up a creative mode world once and finally build myself that obsidian castle I've been fantasising about. :allears:

You'll probably find that diamond armor is a bit overkill for any purpose, and losing it to lava or falling from The End would suck.

A friend and I started a survival world the other day, and look at what we have now:
Image
We got rid of the dragon pretty quickly, made a Fortune III pickaxe from the EXP, and then he alone spent a few hours yesterday getting all of those diamonds and lapis blocks with it. No real purpose for them either, since we started the world for fun and probably won't be hanging on to it for long.

I've been trying to convince him that we should play "Hardcore SMP", where the world gets restarted if either of us dies. :crack:

Might have screenies of our creative world soon.

^Whoah. That's some really impressive loot. :-D So, enchanting has been decoded already, right? Or can you get it to ingame?

Well, the thing is, I did manage to get a set in my first file, but that's the one on this laggy laptop that barely can make me build stuff. Oh, yeah, I didn't even consider losing it like that. :nngh: Darn.
Though, I could possibly try to move over my save file to grandma's comp.

Someone(on this very site) once told me that if you dig down to layer 15 (Hit F3 and dig down until the y starts with 15) and dig horizontally you have a bigger chance of finding diamonds. :vogue:

There isn't exactly a code to enchanting. Once you choose the number of levels to spend, the rest is up to luck. There's a tool that simulates the enchanting code to give you an idea of the probabilities. We had two level 50 enchants on diamond pickaxes, so there were two chances around 27% that we'd get Fortune III.

Pinkemon wrote:Someone(on this very site) once told me that if you dig down to layer 15 (Hit F3 and dig down until the y starts with 15) and dig horizontally you have a bigger chance of finding diamonds. :vogue:

That was me. It's not necessarily faster, but enables you to find diamonds (layers 2-18) without the hassle and risk of lava. (layers 1-10)

Anyway, I finally took some screens of my creative server, which I run for a group of friends and friend's friends. (Also, is there a forum tag I can collapse all of this in?)

I do level 12. Reasoning? There's more the farther down you go, but the lava lakes start at level 10. When you're at level 12, if you open one up you'll be standing on the same level as it's surface (because the player is 2 blocks high) and it won't leak into your mines. I just go in a grid pattern- if you do it right, it can be incredibly efficient.

Heh. I had the bright idea to build an upside-down pyramid once. It sounds great on paper, because you don't have to worry about tearing down half the walls every time you feel like expanding it and you don't have to worry about mobs spawning on top and then sneaking up on you when you come out in the morning. Plus upside-down stuff is funny! But then you run into issues like lighting the ground underneath, keeping mobs from using said ground as a shelter from the sun, making an entrance that doesn't wreck its pyramid-ness, and not being able to really give it a basement.

And either way, pyramids would be way cooler if Minecraft had sandstone step blocks and corner step blocks.

Marvelous game but i do wish they would expand on the dungeon idea and make them bigger and riskier than what they currently are (maybe even ad better loot the riskier the dungeon). You see i started playing this type of game on terraria and the "dungeon" in there is this huge undeground section full of hard monsters, traps, etc.
I don't think they should go that big but increasing the size, complexity and difficulty on these dungeons could be awesome.

Yeah, Minecraft needs some work in that department.
Also a better combat system in general-remember when we were promised monster attack animations and parries for 1.8?
Really, on the combat side of things I'd love to see shields(battlegear mod does this well) and weapons with actual attack animations with limited speed so fighting mobs didn't become "click rapidly in the enemies direction, the game".
I'd like to have higher level-tool materials gained through combat, like Terraria, and I'd like there to be a use for making large buildings, like making various buildings for NPCs(who could maybe actually be useful) and setting buildings as housing for them. I think those two things might be what I like most about Terraria, although I also feel like they're taken a little too far with level after level of ridiculous equipment and specific furniture required in houses.

Basically I want a lot of things.

You may want a lot, but it still seem reasonable. They would have to give the npcs some reason to be in the game first :P

They are both great games with great similarities and great differences so that everyone can enjoy one, or the other, or both. Hardly stealing if they are both great ideas for game play, and both offer different reasons to play, as both play to different wants.

I'm really picky with mods so I've only ever installed a couple. The issue is always multiplayer-single player is fun for a bit, but eventually I'll get tired of playing by myself, and it's a big hassle getting together people with the same mod, if it even has multiplayer support.

True. Single player can get old pretty quick, even in some of the good mod packs like Technic and Yogbox. Seeing multiplayer support for something like Millenaire would own though, if it were possible, which it probably isn't.

Well, I've had some fun recently with the Buildcraft mod (apparently Industrialcraft doesn't work with 1.2.5 yet) after seeing the yogscast videos about the Technic pack. It's quite fun.

Who doesn't want a lot of things?

A complex NPC ecosystem would be nice, but they shouldn't even bother if it's going to be like Terraria where you build the most minimalistic housing possible to access a generic NPC type. Villagers ought to be handled more dynamically, like Dwarf Fortress entities or something. They should actually interact with the world and have their own belongings/relationships instead of just occupying some space so the player can take quests or make trades with them.

The thing I want out of Minecraft more than anything else right now is the modding API. Preferably something flexible enough to make Bukkit and Spout obsolete. That way any server mod can work with the vanilla Minecraft client and bring the same features to multiplayer that are already possible in single player, without everyone having to mod their own clients for compatibility. It'd also help if the functionality of essential stuff like GroupManager and Multiverse were built in to Minecraft so we don't end up with a mess of mods that depend on other mods to work.

If there's anything the game has done right, it's not going overboard with the different types of items you can get. My biggest gripe with Terraria is that there's simply too much stuff worth hanging on to that only serves one or two purposes, and building chests does a pathetic job of managing it all when they only hold like 20 items and you can't access very many at once without moving your character around. Even though Minecraft stacks are smaller, you tend to collect the same handful of different items and ultimately don't have deal much with filled pockets and organizing your stuff.

Lazy wrote:I'm really picky with mods so I've only ever installed a couple. The issue is always multiplayer-single player is fun for a bit, but eventually I'll get tired of playing by myself, and it's a big hassle getting together people with the same mod, if it even has multiplayer support.

This is kind of what Spout tries to remedy by allowing server mods to affect the client, but it unfortunately requires your players to be using the Spoutcraft client. A lot of the cool mods out there aren't developed for the Spout API either.

I was bored. I'm not sure where the basement is in the library, because I'm too lazy to go look for it in an episode. :pinkieshrug:

So what's it exactly supposed to do, anyway? Is it basically going to fill the role of Spoutcraft?

Anyway, so people keep telling me to post here, we have a new server we're all playing on. It's the Bluehell Productions Minecraft server, I'm one of the admins (and a couple ponygoons are mod there). Here's the subforum for it, with server info: http://www.bluehellproductions.com/foru ... opic=25462

We have a really nice spawn that's built up. Pic sans a a couple buildings. Me, drunkill, chunky, reidransom, phoolcat, snakeinabox, lazy, kelven, and some others have been playing over here. When you hop in, say you know one of us and a mod will set up your build rights.
