If you don't already own it on GOG (I had it on Steam, for example) I recommend picking up the GOG version anyway. It's got a lot of extra goodies, such as the soundtrack and the Fallout Bible. Very fascinating stuff and worth the $0.00 it'll take.

Furthermore, you'll always have the GOG copy since it's completely DRM free!

Try hitting Alt + Enter, that's usually the shortcut to window something and it works with most of GOG's games since they run through DOSBox.

Welp, that did it. It turns out that getting Fallout for free is enough to get me to sign up for GoG. I'm only human after all, I can only take so much temptation :gonkity:

(Just kidding, getting Fallout for free is awesome :awesomedash: )

Also, do they normally add free games to your account? Because they also gave me "Beneath A Steel Sky" (which I vaguely remember, don't know if it was any good or not) and... "Ultima IV," which owns. :yay:

I can already tell that I'm going to waste a lot of money on this site.

I wanted to post so there were 3 Princess Celestia avatars in a row. (If Westy posts next we'll have a princess sandwich! :pinkietoot: ) (Edit: This is the best page of any thread :gotcha: )

Anyway, I just wanna talk about how great GoG is for playing old games. The way the games come pre-configured is AMAZING, especially for games that are normally hard to configure for Windows 7 like Master of Magic.

I really wish they'd increase their game roster though. I'd love to be able to play stuff like Jill of the Jungle or Ashes of Empire again.

I've only had one problem with GOG before. The Neverwinter Nights game they packaged was actually an older version, even though all the numbering said otherwise. Took a long time on Google and a couple of forums to figure that out and patch it properly. Not sure if they ever fixed that, it was apparently known/brought to their attention before and they hadn't.

All that being said, it takes most of my restraint not to buy a bunch of old games on there. Everything else I've gotten has ran great "out of the box" so to speak. Haven't installed Fallout yet though.

Mechwarrior 2 may be possible, I know it was a pain to set up on my computer but it was doable. Mechwarrior 3 is a lost cause though I think. I've yet to see a reliable way to get it to work on a Windows 7 machine. Which sucks because I'd like to be able to play the games I pay for, even 10 years later. :fluttersmith:

Yes. I'm lucky that I have a Win98 laptop in perfect running order lying around. It was a beast of a device when it came out, so it handles any legacy game I've thrown at it. I would like to retire it, though. Having everything on one DRM-free online account is awesome. :allears:

I love The Incredible Machine so much by gum! :awesomedash:

My first game of it I played was "Even more Incredible Machine" and it was great and I got every game except the first Contraptions game since, including Toon Machine.

Oh man, Jill of the Jungle. That takes me back to the days of CD-ROMs with like a hundred shareware demos on them that I mostly hated because most games back then were either hard for all the wrong reasons or too easy.

But there's one that probably deserves revamped and reissued on GOG: Nitemare 3D. Its creator continues to sell downloads of it from his website, and he's clearly been tweaking it over the years to keep it working with recent versions of Windows, but there are still compatibility issues (not to mention the mouse support is worse than the original DOS version's). We've spoken before on Facebook; maybe I should pitch the idea of distributing a DOSBox-wrapped version on GOG.

I'm pretty sure that GOG usually handles the DOSBox set up, so they probably would be more than happy to work with him to get it supported as best as possible.

Well, he also introduced some changes to the Windows version that he would want to preserve (he bumped every difficulty level up to the next tier, if I recall correctly, and it might be the only version with music), so there'd have to be some work put in on both sides. Not to mention what players might want done — personally I'd like to see it get WASD+horizontal mouselook support and the difficulty levels integrated into a single set of four.

Well, there is a way to get Win 98 games working on your Win 7 machine. WMWare Player (which is free), CPU Grabber (also free), and a copy of Win 98 SE (which is not free).

I have done it and have the old Magic the Gathering game running once more.
You will have to hunt for a img file of the Win 98 floppy disk as it still used a 3.5 floppy to install even though the rest was on CDROM.

CPU Grabber will be moved into the Win 98 VM and ran in there. Running it in 7 with a Sandy Bridge does nothing. Too many cores too much power.

Its a bit of work to get set up (as compared to XP which installs super easy in VM) as you have to make sure you have the right options clicked, then run a couple of DOS programs in the VM to get the drive all virtual drive-d (FDISK, then Format for your virtual drive. I gave it 8 gigs of virtual HD space.) and then once its all installed you have to install VMTools which is really easy then you can play!

And another tip: Low by modern standards resolution games too small on your screen? Right click in your main Win 7 environment, change display to 800 by 600 and huzzah those tiny postage stamps become not tiny. Pixelly, but not tiny. And to think there was a time I though 1024 resolution was more than I would ever need...

Bumping the thread for the current GoG sale. Right now they're running a weekend promo on Ubisoft PC titles, and among those are Beyond Good and Evil for $4.99, Rayman 2 for $2.99, and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for $4.99.

All of these are great and PoP and BG&E are two of the best games from last gen, so if you haven't played any of them yet, this would be a good way to get them.

Sands of Time is an excellent game. The story is worthwhile and the atmosphere is fantastically dreamy and storybookish. It's aged fairly well, too, in most ways.
"It’s a game in the spirit of Miyazaki films, [...] anime like Princess Tutu, and Western works like Adventure Time and Friendship is Magic — a game of heroic innocents growing up against a backdrop of strange events and haunting landscapes."

Of course I have original discs laying around somewhere, but before I start fiddling around again with dosbox and soundblaster settings I rather pay a $6 to save me the hassle and get an already fully set-up game - And THAT service is what I gladly pay for!

Bought Sid Meter's Alpha Centauri a few days ago, having never played it despite being a big fan of the civ series.

I thought that at this age I'd be over the "one more turn" bullshit but nope. :-/ Still ordering little mans around into the wee hours. Good thing work is over for the summer and classes don't start for a couple of weeks.

But yeah, it's a good game. Very atmospheric, with mechanics better than civ 3 but worse than 4 IMO. Basic 4X strategies apply, but there's enough depth and uniqueness to make the early games a rather exciting learning experience.

Man I loved that game, even though I sucked at it. And I mean "never beat it greater than 3rd difficulty level out of about 7" sucked. Probably because I would declare war instead of giving in to the AI's attempts at blackmail. Games a bit rough when you open the diplo tab and 5/6 are labeled "vendetta", and the one "pact" keeps making peace with your enemies. :allears:

I visit GOG a lot. Last game I bought was King of Dragon Pass. If you don't know what that is, it's a game that simulates a clan of vikings living in a very magical world full of myths and angry spirits and you have to manage your clan to success. There is a LP of this currently on going on SA, check it out.

It's a great game and it's only 5.99 on Gog.com.

I just noticed they added Startopia to their collection. Now that is one of my favorite games. It's a fun little sci-fi strategy/management game where you're put in the role of a space station administrator in a kind of Hithiker's Guide to the Galaxy style universe (heck, the VA of your AI assitant was the voice of the Guide in either a audiobook or one of the adaptations of H2G2 if I'm not mistaken) with a host of wacky aliens and with occasional visit from a sleazy space merchant by the name of Arona (who always has the best prices, or so he assures you).

Select GOG games are now available on Mac!

Furthermore, right now they're doing a "Pay what you want" promotion on Interplay games. You can pay as low as $0.01 to get 8 games, but you must donate at least $35 to get the full 32 game bundle. Either way, that's a lot of great games for a cheap, low price. Check it out over here.
