Oldie Moldies, or "How OLD is this cartoon!?"

Far beyond the furthest seas, there are things that are not ponies. (TV, Music, Film, etc. discussion)

Man, I missed everything over the last few days. I didn't get to finish out the pony marathon, or watch the finale live, or this morning's old cartoon stream. :saddash: Stupid education taking precedence over fun. :v:

Ahem. Anyway, OFS is right: Tex Avery was one of the true greats of animation. Here's one of my favorite Tex Avery shorts, which demonstrates his mastery of subverting the tropes of cuteness in Hollywood animation. Also, it's just damn hilarious. The bulldog's wheezy laugh is provided by Avery himself.

This short is another one of his best. I think the voice of the hobo cat is provided by Pinto Colvig, best known as the voice of Goofy, who also was a storyman at Disney and Fleischer's for a while.

Avery made a whole series of shorts where a dumb bulldog named Spike would attempt to screw over his most famous MGM character, Droopy, for no good reason. Naturally, Spike always ends up suffering horribly.

Believe it or not, I had a (female) cat that I named Tex, after Tex Avery. Yes, I loved his work so much that I named a cat after him. She died in 2010 at the age of 13 :fluttersmith:

How about if next week's synchtube is dedicated to Avery?

Heads up on tonight's Jay Ward/Total TV synchtube. I ended up finding so much material that I decided to start half-hour early (at 8:30 pacific). It's going to be at this link

In the meantime I'm playing some unrelated filler to entertain you.

Aww, sorry to hear about your cat.

I enjoyed the Synchtube and I definitely like the idea of a Tex Avery marathon. If nothing else, it's a good way to distract from the beginning of the ponyless summer.

It does give us opportunity to revisit the classics. Watching "King and Odie" again gave me nostalgia attack.

Here's something I showed:

Man, those commercials had better animation than the episodes themselves!

The best part of the morning synchtube was listening to all the trivia Big knows about animation. It's a shame I missed the evening one, I'm sure you guys had a blast.

You're too kind, Momar. :allears:

My only regret is that I was unable to find any "Klondike Kat" to show, although I found the intro:

EDIT: Huh, there was also a theme song with lyrics. Rarely seen, tho:

One of the cartoons from the '60s General Mills package (which included Bullwinkle and Underdog) was a series called "The Hunter". The title character is a dog detective (voiced by Kenny Delmar, a radio star whose voice was the basis for Foghorn Leghorn) who chases after a crook known as the Fox.

The Fox probably commits the most outlandish theft in the history of cartoons. Throughout the series he has stolen the Statue of Liberty and taken it to Soviet Union (so he can charge money to people who wants to see what liberty looks like), swiped the Liberty Bell, taken every single spoon in the whole world so he can make a long chain, and even stolen the Brooklyn Bridge and somehow fit it inside his suitcase.

Yeah, it's a pretty ridiculous cartoon.

65 episodes were made. First 39 aired on King Leonardo and His Short Subjects (NBC 1960-63). Additional 26 were made for Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales (ABC 1963-64 season only)
