The difference also probably has something to do with the fact that NMM appeared during the night, while Chrysalis is in plain daylight, so the palettes they have to contrast against are different.

Well, the difference makes sense in that NMM/Luna is a demigoddess who can control the moon, while Chrysalis is no where near having anything close to a god like status, so therefore she'd appear more "physical" than the mare in charge of the night.

Good point. That, and the fact that "Princess of the Night" requires a more ethereal design than "Bug Queen of the Caves".

Sticky Bug Queen of the Undercaves Fungus Swamp. :allears:

Can you tell I love her design? Her fangs are so fuckin' cyoot, she should have a Twist-esque lithhhhp.

Like, while the whole episode was great, my favourite gag in Luna Eclipsed is when she shrunk back down and spat out the fake fangs. She could have easily just magiced her fangs, but, no, they used a mouth piece.

Not really speaking about design here, but I'd say that while she probably isn't normally, Chrysallis gets on or above the level of the deity-like alicorns when she steals Shining's love for Cadance. I mean, she may not control natural forces like them, but she has the raw power to beat Celestia.

I really like that, personally. I know some people don't like that Celestia was defeated, but at the very least as a concept I like that a bug stole the power of a god.

Now I have to wonder. Why did NMM and Discord need to be defeated with the Elements of Harmony? Why couldn't they go get them to beat Chrysalis? Do they not work on her as she's not a godlike being? Is there something going on?

Are we thinking that the changelings came from the caves (perhaps awakened by the greedy gem-delving unicorns)? I got the idea from Chrysalis' description of Equestria as being unusually high in love content that they were a foreign invasion force.

Very well, but my objection with it is that the changelings for the most part aren't depicted as "a people" and more like a plague (of bugs).

I thought that they simply didn't have time to get the elements before running into Chrysalis and SA/Cadance lovesploding her.

Weren't they trying to get the Elements during that big fight scene, only to find the chamber already full of changelings, who then capture them and bring them back to Chrysalis? That's what I saw. Unless I'm very confused. :pinkieshrug:

Right, that. I'm not remembering it clearly, but the reason they didn't get the elements is because they didn't have the chance.

Right, in fact that was Celestia's dying words ( :gotcha: ) "Get...the...elements..." *dies*

I see them as just a super awesome weapon that the Main Six can use, so the Elements would have worked, except for getting captured.

Yeah, after she gets KO'd, Celestia tells them to go get the Elements.

I would assume that the Elements would work on anybody, but I kind of see them as specifically being a counter to things like Discord. You get kind of a thematic chaos/order thing that way.

Well, Discord's conceptual origin is specifically as a counterbalance to the concept of Harmony, which is what the elements are named after. They were first used on NMM and presumably Discord hadn't been come up with yet, though, so their origin is just in relation to the concept of friendship as harmony without the contrast against disharmony.

I think the idea behind Celestia and Luna is that they're actually more like demigods than actual deities, which puts them more on equal footing with mortal threats. Or maybe they're like the Greek Gods from the God of War series where they are gods but still not totally invincible to getting killed by the angriest man alive a.k.a. Kratos.

That's mostly how a lot of gods in older mythologies were, though, and how I've been thinking of the alicorns-just stronger beings, not undefeatable ones. Doesn't mean they're not gods, just a somewhat different meaning of the word than with a single, omniscient creator. Norse mythology's my favorite example of this, with gods that are fully capable of killing each other and a whole prophecy of how they'll fight to the death and end the world.

Celestia doesn't strike me as being very good at melee. (At least in all of my simulations.) :gotcha:

But, yeah, all the Princesses have a lot of powerful spells and shit, but low AC and HP methinks. I mean, we'll, they're "bosses" so, more HP than a normal pony, but, still.

Yeah, and the gods of Norse myth weren't even immortal without the golden apples protected by Idunn. In one story, Idunn and her apples get stolen, and all the gods start to age.

Someone earlier compared Cadence to Aphrodite, like she's the Princess of Love. Now that they've opened these doors, I say they go all out - I want to see a full Princess Pony Pantheon! :allears:

Maybe. But princesses are bigger (HP) and they have long, sharp horns (melee damage). Plus, since they're casters, AC depends heavily on whether there are magic items and whether there are a decent array of spells like mage armor and magic shield. Plus they're epic level, and I'm sure Demigod Pony Princess has an astronomical level adjustment that comes with all sorts of unfair advantages, and she found Equestria over a thousand years ago while wondering the world (universe??), so I'm prepared to guess that she's a PC class.
And if she's got a divinity score <0, she's also got some pretty crazy advantages right there.

Yeah that's right I'm taking this seriously. Come at me bro

Seriously? Poor children :fluttersmith: I kinda figured out when she stepped over to laser-tag Chrysalis that Celestia would bite the dust. Still makes Celestia more down to earth and a Greek-like goddess, rather than a boring invincible monoteist God. Does that make Discord Ares, the god of war (who liked to wreak chaos among his peers and thought almost only for himself) or, more obviously, a spear counterpart of Eris, the actual goddess of Chaos and Disharmony?

I liked that Celestia was defeated, it shows that she's not a straight up infallible god. Alicorns, obviously, vary in strength, Cadence wasn't depicted as very strong until the Love-Nuke. Maybe because Cadence is still "young," relatively speaking?

On the other hand, Chrysalis's strength or cunning could have already been on par with an Alicorn and was able to defeat or trick Cadence in order to assume her position.

The only thing that could have made the episodes better, in my opinion, would have been a scene of Luna holding back a horde of swarmlings.

Kratos is everything I hate about modern video games and I think he is the worst character, who should be defeated by a wimpy little filly like Twist or even Diamond Tiara. I don't want to play a game as the bad guy who ruins the world for everybody and whose design comes straight out of a 1999 Mountain Dew ad. :rainbert:

On a more cynical note, the real-world reason for Cadence & SA defeating the bug ponies is so Hasbro can sell lots and lots of Cadence and SA toys. Celestia has been around for a while and already made them some cash. In universe, I just assumed the same as everyone else: that Bug Queen won because she had siphoned power from Cadence and SA's love. That theory seems to make the most sense.

I disagree with the "bad guy who ruins the world for everybody" part, only kinda the design, but mostly I just don't like how simple God of War is for a slash 'em up.

Well, the nice thing about this is that now that Hasbro has another Pink Pony Princess(TM), they are free to make actual white Celestia toys. Which I'm pretty sure it's confirmed they're going to do.
