New DVD: Royal Pony Wedding

Post by Mr. Big (?) » Fri May 04, 2012 4:05 am

Looks like we're getting a new DVD from Shout! soon.

5 episodes will be in it. Obviously two of them will be "A Canterlot Wedding" parts 1 and 2. Any guess on what the other three are?

I'm going to guess "Secret of My Excess", "A Friend in Deed", and "Hearts and Hooves Day", since they all involve love as part of the story.

Yep yep, figured these two eps would be featured on something like this at some point.

This figures to be a better collection of eps than last...

I'm guessing "Sweet and Elite," "Hearth's Warming Eve," and "It's About Time."

From EqD, directly from Shout, it's MSRP $14.97, and the eps are...

-217 H&HD
-209 S&E
-126 BNE

Pretty solid set

So with the exception of Hearts and Hooves, all episodes that take place mostly in Canterlot.

LYRA is the cool pony who likes to hang out. You can find most of the cool ponies with her. LYRA can just chill and do whatever and totally relax. "Take it easy" is the LYRA motto, for example, that's how laid back she is.

That's a hell of solid selection of episodes. This might be a good DVD for getting people into the show.

It's a good selection, but I still have to question how good it'll be as a starter. :pinkieshrug: For new viewers, I think having Ticket Master to establish personalities and build up to TBNE would be useful.
EDIT: Though yeah, if it weren't for DVD region codes ( :argh:), I'd still be prepared to give this one out as an unexpected Christmas gift, which I probably wouldn't do with Friendship Express.

At least this one is probably guaranteed to have more bonus features... like all the Tori Spelling bits! :v:

It's interesting that all the episodes on this set have song(s), 7-8 total, while the Friendship Express had 3 (2.5 if you say Heart Carol is iffy).

Bit off-topic, but one trend I've noticed with both seasons is that towards the end of the season songs take a long break, give or take a couple shorties, then return in the finale.

It's a very strong set of episodes, although I don't know if I would use it to convert skeptical adults. There are a lot of girly themes early in these episodes, and it's only later that most of them tweak and subvert their formulas heavily.

I'll probably skip on this one, even though the episode selection is stronger than The Friendship Express DVD. I bought the first DVD to show support for the show and to get the unedited version of The Last Roundup but I can't keep buying every DVD with a handful of episodes they put out.

Unless the special features make it worth my while but I somehow doubt it.

I'd find it funny if there were eventually 2 or 3 episodes left with no common theme. I think us Australians are getting the best deal.

You deserve that kind of special compensation when you live on a continent where everything is poisonous and wants to kill you. :gotcha: Ponies make everything better, it's scientifically proven.

Not to be a whiner, but as a recent owner of a blu-ray player, an HD release would have been awesome... Still might pick this up :pinkieshrug:

Blu-ray is unlikely, even the people doing the Australian release (which is the most 'comprehensive' (read: full season) release) said a blu-ray is pretty much out of the question but who knows, maybe after the show has done it's entire run and it's really popular in a few years. But for now, no blu-ray form the people doing 'the best' dvd releases.

I'd like it if the Australian company someday did a Blu release, because then it might be regionless and anyone could import it and not have to worry about local licensees half-assing their releases (like, say, Shout! Factory :-/ ).

The price of this DVD on Amazon has gone back up to $13.50 from $10.50. Guess I'm keeping my pre-order, then.

The only way I'm buying this DVD is if they have a 12 minute vignette of Sibsy and her husband arguing over marital issues.

I could watch that all day.

In the bonus features, MA Larson's OC is a movie buff who suggests (real-life) movie concepts to his friend, who immediately rejects all of them as stupid. :gotcha:
